The Giants tried to trade for the Yankees' Eric Chavez before the Tuesday, July 31 non-waiver tread deadline, tweeted ESPN's Buster Olney. San Francisco was offering up outfielder Nate Schierholtz, who eventually ended up in Philadelphia as part of the Hunter Pence trade.
Chavez has an .817 OPS in 72 games this season. Schierholtz, in 77 games with the Giants, posted a .739 OPS. In three games with the Phillies since the trade, Schierholtz is batting .375/.400/.750 in three games and eight at-bats.
Here are more rumors and news from around the league:
-
The Diamondbacks, in their attempts to land a premier starting pitcher, "kicked the tires on Matt Garza" and "went hard after James Shields," wrote The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro. The Diamondbacks did their "due diligence" on Boston's reported starters available -- Jon Lester and Josh Beckett -- but no deals were made because Arizona didn't want to trade their top minor league arms.
-
Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers was upset about all the misinformation that spreads around the time of the deadline. Here's what he had to say:
"We’ve actually talked internally -- I won’t say we’re going to do it, but we’re going to discuss doing it – about having scouts and front office employees sign a statement of confidentiality. And if something gets out, it could be termination. It’s been done with other organizations and other sports. It’s a way to try to keep the information in-house as much as you can so you don’t have to put out fires on a daily basis."

The Blue Jays made some roster moves after they lost 5-4 in 15 innings to Oakland early Wednesday morning. Starting pitcher Brett Cecil was optioned to Triple-A, reliever Andrew Carpenter was designated for assignment, and, with Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus day-to-day with injuries, Toronto called up pitcher Jesse Chavez and highly touted shortstop prospect Adeiny Hechavarria, tweeted the Toronto Star's Richard Griffin.
-
Hechavarria comes up batting .312/.363/.424 in 102 games with Triple-A Las Vegas, with six home runs and 63 RBI. He's expected to get the start at third base, where he hasn't played a game before, on Saturday afternoon.
