Both Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez and Red Sox reliever Mark Melancon were expected to play large roles for their teams in 2012, but both found themselves demoted to the minors after rough starts. Both have been called back to the big leagues for Sunday's game, with Sanchez in the Marlins' starting lineup.
Sanchez, an All-Star last season, was hitting just .197/.244/.295 when he was demoted to Triple-A last month, but in 19 games at New Orleans, hit .310/.494/.483 with three homers. He will be batting sixth for Miami's game against the Rays on Sunday.
Melancon, 27, had 20 saves for the Astros last season and came over in a trade during the offseason to help fortify the Boston bullpen. Instead, he pitched in just four games and gave up 11 earned runs on five home runs in just two innings as part of the team's early-season bullpen struggles. In 21 games for Triple-A Pawtucket, he allowed just two earned runs and picked up 11 saves. He struck out 27 and walked three in 21 2/3 innings.
The Red Sox placed Rich Hill on the disabled list with soreness in his left elbow and forearm. He is scheduled to see Dr. James Andrews in Florida on Monday. The Marlins designated infielder Donnie Murphy after Saturday's game. He was hitting just .133/.245/.311 in 27 games for the Marlins this season.
