News and notes from Friday:
- The Orioles have released veteran reliever Kevin Gregg, the club announced via Twitter. Gregg had a decent five-year run with the Angels, Marlins, Cubs and Blue Jays from 2006-10, notching a 114 ERA+ and 121 saves in 358 2/3 innings. He leveraged that into a two-year, $10 million deal with the Orioles but didn't deliver for Baltimore. The 34-year-old mustered just a 4.53 ERA and a 1.4 K/BB with 22 saves against seven blown in his Orioles' career. The club also outrighted infielder Ryan Adams to Triple-A Norfolk.
- The White Sox recalled pitcher Jhan Marinez from Triple-A Charlotte. Marinez, one of the pieces acquired from the Marlins in exchange for Ozzie Guillen, appeared in just one game for the White Sox this year. In 40 games for Charlotte, Marinez recorded a 2.86 ERA and struck out over a batter per inning.
- The Marlins selected the contract of infielder Gil Velazquez and moved Emilio Bonifacio to the 60-day disabled list, Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. Bonifacio has been out since Aug. 22 with a sprained knee. That and other injuries restricted him to just 64 games. Velazquez, 32, appeared in two games with the Marlins earlier this season and has only 15 major league games under his belt for his career.
