The Orioles have agreed to a trade for the Diamondbacks Joe Saunders the team announced on Sunday. Baltimore sends right-hander Matt Lindstrom and a player to be named to Arizona, while the Diamondbacks will also send "cash considerations" to Baltimore along with Saunders.
Saunders, a free agent after the season, is 6-10 with a 4.22 ERA for the Diamondbacks this season. With the overflow of young pitching talent in Arizona's system (Trevor Bauer, Tyler Skaggs and even Archie Bradley) in addition to a rotation that already features Trevor Cahill, Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson (who is currently on the DL) under team control through at least 2015, Saunders is redundant.
Baltimore is 69-57 and tied for one of the second wild card spot going into Sunday's games, despite its starting pitchers allowing 4.59 runs per game, 10th best in the American League.
Saunders was 12-13 with a 3.69 ERA for the Diamondbacks last season. He lasted just three innings in his only start in the National League Division Series against the Brewers last season. Overall, he's 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in four postseason starts.
Lindstrom, 32, has a 2.72 ERA in 35 appearances for the Orioles, striking out 30 and walking 12 in 36 1/3 innings. Lindstrom has an $4 million club option for 2013 or a $200,000 buyout.
