Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz has been hospitalized with intestinal bleeding, according to tweets by Joe Amorosino of 7News in Boston.
The report states the intestinal bleeding was caused by anti-inflammatory drugs, such as iburprofin. The Red Soxplaced Buchholz on the disabled list Sunday morning with what it called a "gastro-intestinal situation." On Saturday the right-hander was scratched from his scheduled start against the Braves in Sunday's series finale. Right-hander Aaron Cook has been activated from the disabled list to make the start.
Cook has been on the disabled list since May 5, when he suffered a cut on his left knee while covering the plate on a passed ball. Cook started a game for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, allowing three runs on seven hits in just four innings against Syracuse.
In his lone start for the Red Sox this season, he allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk in just 2 2/3 innings in that start against the Orioles.
Last season he was 3-10 with a 6.03 ERA for the Rockies.
Buchholz is 8-2 with a 5.53 ERA for the Red Sox this season.
