Scott Hairston had two hits and two RBI Sunday night in Arizona, and helped the Mets beat the Diamondbacks 5-1. Hairston continues to draw interest from teams looking for a right-handed bat off their bench, but only "marginal prospects" would be headed to the Mets, and that isn't good enough, reported the New York Daily News' Andy Martino.
Hairston, 32, is in the midst of a career-year, as proven by his .815 OPS. Since the Mets aren't getting what they feel is a fair return for Hairston, a free agent at the end of the year, currently playing out a one-year, $1.1 million contract, they're open to re-signing him. Hairston has indicated he'd like to stick around, too. A contract extension hasn't yet been discussed, noted Martino.
While it's probably prudent for the Mets to try and deal Hairston, because he isn't getting any younger, Martino pointed out that the Mets have issues in the outfield, and Hairston could prove valuable again next season.
Another pending Mets free agent, left-handed reliever Tim Byrdak, "has drawn zero interest of late" on the trade market, according to Martino's source.
Finally, Martino also wrote that the Mets aren't likely to move Daniel Murphy. At the right price, they'll move him -- they'll move anyone -- but there's still hope in Queens that Murphy can be the Mets' everyday second baseman next year and beyond.
