The Royals designated Jonathan Sanchez for assignment Tuesday, as first reported by Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. To reset their roster in the aftermath, the club has made three more roster moves, officially recalling pitchers Ryan Verdugo and Vin Mazzaro as expected as well as optioning outfielder Jason Bourgeois. Verdugo will start the Royals' Tuesday night tilt against the Mariners.
Sanchez was a failure from the start in Kansas City, falling to injury early in the season and making just 12 starts with a 7.76 ERA. His Royals career in a nutshell: 44 walks against just 36 strikeouts.
Bourgeois had a solid run with the Royals this year, hitting .333/.389/.455, but the playing time just wasn't there in an outfield set with Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson, Jeff Francoeurand now Lorenzo Cain. Bourgeois has appeared in just 19 games and received just 36 plate appearances.
Verdugo owns a 3.58 ERA for Omaha this season, striking out 72 against 44 walks in 88 innings. He was acquired as a secondary piece in the trade that sent Melky Cabrera to San Francisco for Sanchez.
Mazzaro has a 4.53 ERA in eight starts for Omaha but a solid 3.2 K/BB on the season. He has started at least four games each of the last four seasons for Kansas City, with a 5.19 career ERA and a 1.46 K/BB.
