Hey, remember that trade deadline frenzy that happened this past Monday? That was actually a non-waiver trade deadline. MLB trades can still happen, it's just different now (explanation here).
And we now have our first post-deadline deal on the board, as the Pirates have shipped reliever Arquimedes Caminero to the Mariners for a player to be named later.
Presumably, Caminero cleared waivers and then was dealt, but it's possible the Mariners claimed him and worked out a deal with the Pirates.
Caminero is a 29-year-old fireballer with command issues. In 41 innings this season, he has a 3.51 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 32 strikeouts. He's walked 22 while having allowed 46 hits.
There's raw power in there that Caminero could still harness, however. His fastball hits triple digits relatively frequently. It averaged 98.77 miles per hour in July and is over 100 in his one August outing (Brooksbaseball.net).
So there is upside here. Mariners fans can dream on a back-end duo pumping triple digits with ease when it comes to Caminero and rookie Edwin Diaz. It's also possible Caminero never materializes as more than a garbage-time type.
Regardless, the newsworthiness here is that we have our first post-deadline deal. Drink it up.
