McGee has announced his retirement from professional baseball, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
McGee pitched for 13 MLB seasons and compiled a 3.71 ERA over 650 relief appearances with 79 saves. He served as closer for the Rays, Rockies and Giants at various points in his career, and he also pitched for the Dodgers, Brewers and Nationals. The 36-year-old struggled to a 6.81 ERA over 42 appearances in 2022 while spending time with Washington, San Francisco and Milwaukee.

Jake McGee: Cut by Washington
Rotowire
The Nationals released McGee on Sunday.
McGee will be moving on from his third organization of the season after he preceded his stint in Washington with stops in San Francisco and Milwaukee. The 36-year-old lefty becomes one of the most experienced relief arms on the open market, but his 6.81 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 37 innings on the season likely means he won't command much interest.

Nationals' Jake McGee: DFA'd by Washington
Rotowire
McGee was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Friday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
McGee was claimed off waivers by Washington a month ago and has been let go after he gave up seven earned runs across 10 innings. The veteran lefty has a 6.81 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 25:12 K:BB over 37 frames between stints with the Giants, Brewers and Nationals this year.

Nationals' Jake McGee: Claimed by Nationals
Rotowire
McGee was claimed off waivers by the Nationals on Tuesday, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports.
After he was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Sunday, McGee will join his third organization of the season when he arrives in Washington. The left-hander owns an inflated 7.00 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with 15 strikeouts over 27 innings in 30 appearances with the Giants and Brewers in 2022. He will likely operate as a low-leverage option in the Nationals' bullpen moving forward.

Brewers' Jake McGee: DFA'd by Milwaukee
Rotowire
McGee was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Sunday.
McGee signed with Milwaukee just after the All-Star break but surrendered four earned runs with a 4:1 K:BB across 5.2 innings. The left-hander has a 7.00 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 30 appearances between his stints with the Giants and Brewers this year.

Brewers' Jake McGee: Signs with Brewers
Rotowire
The Brewers signed McGee to a major-league contract Friday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
After McGee was cut by the Giants on July 14, he has found a new home in Milwaukee. The left-hander owns a disappointing 7.17 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with 11 strikeouts over 21.1 frames in 24 appearances out of the bullpen this year. McGee will likely operate in a low-leverage role for the Brewers moving forward.

Jake McGee: Becomes free agent
Rotowire
The Giants placed McGee on unconditional release waivers Thursday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
With no team willing to foot the bill on the money remaining on the two-year, $5 million deal McGee signed in February 2021, the Giants will cut ties with the veteran lefty, who was designated for assignment last week. McGee opened the season in a high-leverage role and secured three saves and four holds across his 24 appearances for San Francisco, but he fell out of favor after surrendering six runs on nine hits and a walk in 3.1 innings over his final four outings. McGee should attract interest on the open market, but he'll likely have trouble finding a fantasy-friendly role with his next team.

Giants' Jake McGee: Designated for assignment
Rotowire
McGee was designated for assignment by the Giants on Saturday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
McGee saved 31 games for the Giants last season and even added three more this year, but the team apparently doesn't even believe he's worthy of a low-leverage role at the moment. It's hard to argue with that conclusion when looking at just this year's numbers for the 35-year-old southpaw. He owns a 7.17 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 21.1 innings of work, striking out just 11.5 percent of opposing batters. That recent performance may prevent him from getting claimed off waivers, though it's possible a team will value him for his experience and past success.

Giants' Jake McGee: Takes loss Wednesday
Rotowire
McGee (1-2) was charged with the loss Wednesday versus Atlanta. He allowed three runs on three hits while recording only one out.
With Camilo Doval unavailable after having pitched four of the five previous days, McGee was given a save opportunity. It got off to a bad start when Dansby Swanson took McGee deep for a solo shot, and Atlanta added a pair of singles after that. Tyler Rogers then allowed an inherited runner to score on an Adam Duvall single, with the decisive run on McGee's line. The veteran southpaw saw his 7.2-inning scoreless streak end in brutal fashion, and he now has a 4.96 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB with three saves, three blown saves and four holds through 18.1 innings overall.

Giants' Jake McGee: Perfect inning for save
Rotowire
McGee pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Dodgers.
McGee hadn't logged a save or a hold since April 20, picking up two blown saves and a win in that span. He struggled before going on the injured list with lower-back tightness, but he's pitched six scoreless innings since his return May 31. The 35-year-old still has a 6.06 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB in 16.1 innings overall, but he's trending in the right direction after picking up his third save of the season. He got the save chance Sunday since Camilo Doval had pitched three of the four previous days, but McGee should still be considered a high-leverage option.

Giants' Jake McGee: Extends scoreless streak
Rotowire
McGee walked one in a scoreless inning during Friday's 7-2 win over the Dodgers.
Since returning from a stint on the injured list with lower-back tightness, McGee has logged five scoreless innings, giving up just a hit and a walk with three strikeouts. That's a massive improvement given where his game was early in the season -- he's still got a 6.46 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB across 15.1 innings overall. He hasn't logged a save since April 20, with Camilo Doval the current favorite for closing duties among Giants relievers, though manager Gabe Kapler is no stranger to playing matchups rather than using defined roles.

Giants' Jake McGee: Returns from injured list
Rotowire
McGee (back) was activated off the injured list as expected Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
McGee wound up missing just over the minimum 15 days with lower-back tightness. He'd pitched his way out of his share of the closing role prior to the injury, posting a 9.58 ERA and 1.94 WHIP in 10.1 innings of work while striking out just 11.8 percent of opposing batters, but he's good to go after striking out seven of the 10 batters he faced across a trio of rehab appearances. Mauricio Llovera was optioned to clear space on the active roster.

Giants' Jake McGee: Should be back Friday
Rotowire
The Giants are expected to activate McGee (back) from the 15-day injured list Friday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Though McGee gave up a run in the most recent of his three minor-league rehab outings with Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, the Giants have been encouraged with how his velocity has ticked up as the minor-league assignment has progressed. McGee will likely throw in front of the Giants' coaching and training staff Thursday, and if he checks out fine, he should settle back into a setup role for the big club this weekend.

Giants' Jake McGee: Starts up rehab assignment
Rotowire
McGee (back) made a rehab appearance for Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, striking out the side in a perfect 13-pitch inning.
McGee isn't eligible to return from the 15-day injured list until May 26, so he could make one or two more rehab appearances over the next week before being activated. Though he looked sharp Wednesday in his first appearance in more than a week, McGee will likely have to settle for a setup role upon his return to the Giants after a string of poor outings prior to landing on the IL. Meanwhile, Camilo Doval has seemingly gained more job security as the Giants' closer after posting a 0.61 ERA while converting all seven of his save chances in 14 appearances since getting lit up for three earned runs and blowing a save Opening Day.

Giants' Jake McGee: Placed on injured list
Rotowire
McGee was placed on the 15-day injured list with lower-back tightness Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
McGee has struggled since the start of May, as he allowed 10 runs (nine earned) while striking out three in 3.2 innings over his last four appearances. McGee hadn't picked up a save since April 20, but the southpaw's placement on the IL should lead to more ninth-inning opportunities for Camilo Doval.

Giants' Jake McGee: Shaky in non-save situation
Rotowire
McGee allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out two in one inning during Monday's win over the Rockies.
McGee was fortunate to enter the game with a six-run cushion, as he was ineffective in his inning of work. The southpaw's last save came nearly three weeks ago -- April 20 versus the Mets. Since then, he's surrendered 10 runs (nine earned) in 4.2 innings. His struggles lately have bloated his ratios to a 9.64 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in 9.1 innings overall. Camilo Doval seems likely to continue getting most of the save opportunities.

Giants' Jake McGee: Blows save, earns win
Rotowire
McGee (1-1) allowed one run on one hit in one inning, taking a blown save but earning the win Monday versus the Brewers.
McGee allowed the game-tying solo home run to Willy Adames in the eighth inning. He then ended up in line for the win after Luis Gonzalez restored the Giants' lead with a two-run blast in the ninth. This was McGee's first homer surrendered this season, and he's allowed only two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The veteran southpaw has added two saves and one hold as he continues to see high-leverage work as part of the Giants' closer committee. Camilo Doval pitched a perfect ninth inning to lock down his fourth save of the season.

Giants' Jake McGee: Notches second save
Rotowire
McGee earned a save against the Mets on Wednesday, walking one and striking out one over a scoreless inning.
McGee entered in the ninth inning with the Giants staked to a three-run lead and inauspiciously walked the first batter he faced. However, he recovered from there, retiring the next three hitters to close out the contest. This was his second save in the past five days after Camilo Doval racked up a pair of saves last week. For the time being, it looks like both relievers will be given opportunities to close.

Giants' Jake McGee: Picks up first save of season
Rotowire
McGee earned the save Saturday against the Guardians after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.
McGee pitched in the ninth inning for the first time this season and while he got the job done, it wasn't easy. Needing to protect a two-run lead, McGee gave up a single to Josh Naylor and walked Owen Miller before finding himself with runners on the corners and just one out. However, he struck out Oscar Mercado and retired Myles Straw on a groundout to record his first save of the campaign. While McGee was originally expected to be the leading alternative for saves, a live-armed Camilo Doval, who was likely unavailable Saturday after being used heavily this week, seems to be ahead of the veteran McGee in the pecking order in the early going.

Giants' Jake McGee: Handed loss Saturday
Rotowire
McGee (0-1) allowed a run on two hits in two-thirds of an innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Marlins.
McGee entered the game in the seventh inning of a low-scoring game. He allowed a go-ahead RBI single to Jesus Sanchez, and McGee didn't finish the inning, with Camilo Doval escaping trouble instead. Through two appearances, McGee has logged a hold and a loss -- he's yet to pitch in the ninth inning despite being designated as the head of the Giants' closer committee. Manager Gabe Kapler is likely to continue mixing and matching relievers to specific matchups rather than utilizing defined roles, so McGee is more of a late-inning option than a true closer.
