The Nationals, Yankees, Astros, Diamondbacks and Guardians have all acquired non-Alonso first basemen in recent days. The Mets remain the cleanest and most obvious fit for him. Michael Baron@michaelgbaron2D agoIf the #Mets can't/don't sign Pete Alonso, to me, the pivot isn't Paul Goldschmidt or a stop gap major league first baseman. I'd sign Alex Bregman and move Mark Vientos to 1B. They'd be giving up a pick but getting one back for Alonso, Severino & maybe Manaea.

Michael Baron@michaelgbaron2D agoPer @BNightengale, the #Mets are talking to Paul Goldschmidt. He is either a fallback option to Alonso, an attempt to smoke Alonso out, or a combination of the two. If Alonso decides to go elsewhere, fine, but Goldschmidt should only be an alternative to Alonso.
