Luke Gregerson: Granted release
The Cardinals placed Gregerson on unconditional release waivers Monday.
Gregerson's tenure with the organization officially comes to an end after the Cardinals couldn't find another club willing to take on the money remaining on his contract. After inking a two-year, $12 million deal with the Cardinals in the winter of 2017, Gregerson logged just 18.1 innings at the big-league level and surrendered 15 runs on 25 hits and seven walks.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Evening out performances
Gregerson fired a scoreless ninth inning in a loss to the Pirates on Sunday, allowing no hits and issuing a walk.
After a shoulder injury delayed the start to his season until May 5, Gregerson stumbled over his first pair of appearances. The veteran right-hander allowed three earned runs over two innings during that span, but he's now bounced back with back-to-back scoreless appearances. Gregerson has been utilized in low-leverage situations thus far, with manager Mike Shildt looking to ease the veteran back into action. However, the 34-year-old should eventually see some hold opportunities as the season unfolds considering his established track record.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Struggles in '19 debut
Gregerson allowed an earned run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the Cubs on Sunday, his first major-league action of 2019.
The veteran reliever had mostly cruised through an extensive minor-league rehab assignment during April, but he got a rocky welcome to major-league action Sunday. Gregerson threw 12 pitches overall, allowing a leadoff double to Albert Almora, Jr. in the seventh and a run-scoring single to Ben Zobrist that plated the latter. Gregerson will likely work as a low-leverage middle-relief option as he gets his feet wet, although it bears noting he does have past closing experience with the Astros that could come into play should Andrew Miller and/or Jordan Hicks sustain injuries that shelve them for any amount of time.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Likely activation date announced
Updating a previous report, the Cardinals are expected to activate Gregerson (shoulder) before Saturday's game against the Cubs, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
The team had already announced it planned to activate Gregerson at some point during the weekend. There's now a bit more certainty on that front courtesy of president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, who stated there was a "high probability" of Gregerson being added to the 25-man roster ahead of Saturday's game. Friday marked the conclusion of the 30-day window on the veteran's rehab assignment, but the Cardinals opted to wait at least one more day for activation to give him extra time to recover from a live batting practice session Wednesday.

Gregerson's long road to activation appears to finally be coming to an end. Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Return date coming into focus
Gregerson (shoulder) will likely return to the 25-man roster before the end of the Cardinals' current seven-game road trip, Ian Quillen of MLB.com reports.
The news came directly from manager Mike Shildt, who observed Gregerson throw live batting practice to seven Cardinals hitters at Nationals Park prior to Wednesday's game. St. Louis' skipper noted that Gregerson displayed late movement on several pitches and looked good overall, but he added that how the veteran right-hander recovers over the rest of the week will largely determine his exact activation date.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Live BP on tap
Gregerson (shoulder) will throw live batting practice Wednesday, Ian Quillen of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander met with manager Mike Shildt and the coaching staff Tuesday as planned, and the decision for Gregerson to throw the live BP stemmed from that discussion. Shildt expressed the belief that he'd get a better feel for where Gregerson is in his recovery process by watching him face the Cardinals' hitters. If the veteran acquits himself well, activation may be imminent, considering his rehab assignment has encompassed a robust 11 appearances and will reach its 30-day limit Friday.

Gregerson (shoulder) is scheduled to meet with coaches and trainers in Washington, D.C. on Monday to determine when he'll be activated from the injured list, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
If Gregerson checks out OK, he could be activated from the 10-day IL as early as Tuesday. The veteran right-hander made rehab appearances for Double-A Springfield on Saturday and Sunday, though the Cardinals may want him to get another minor-league tuneup in before rejoining the big-league bullpen.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Headed for more rehab appearances
Gregerson (shoulder) feels good following two outings with Triple-A Memphis but is likely headed to Double-A Springfield for a few more rehab appearances, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports.
Gregerson has yet to pitch in the big leagues this season due to shoulder inflammation, but he could return in the near future if he continues to throw the ball well in the minor leagues. The Cardinals will likely activate Gregerson from the injured list if he fires a few more innings at Double-A without issue.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Looking strong at Triple-A
Gregerson (shoulder) fired two scoreless innings in which he allowed two hits and recorded a strikeout across two appearances with Triple-A Memphis against Round Rock over the weekend.
The rehabbing right-hander has encouragingly looked as effective at the Triple-A level as he had in the lower rungs of the organization earlier in his rehab. With a pair of strong appearances against the caliber of competition closest to that of the big leagues, Gregerson could potentially be deemed ready for activation in the earlier part of the week.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Rehab heading to Tripe-A
Gregerson (shoulder), who fired a perfect fifth inning in Double-A Springfield's loss to Tulsa on Tuesday, will move his rehab to Triple-A Memphis, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Gregerson has put in three appearances each at the High-A and Double-A levels, so he'll now get a crack at the highest level of competition short of the majors. The Cardinals plan to have the veteran right-hander pitch on back-to-back days for the Redbirds for the first time in his recovery before activating him from the injured list.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Strong against better competition
Gregerson (shoulder) fired a scoreless sixth inning in Double-A Springfield's win over Northwest Arkansas on Friday, recording two strikeouts.
The bump up in competition did nothing to slow down Gregerson, who'd been impressive over multiple rehab appearances at High-A. He needed a modest 16 pitches, nine of which found the strike zone, to get through his one frame against the Naturals. Gregerson could head to Triple-A Memphis for his next rehab appearance, which could also be his final one before activation.

Gregerson (shoulder) started High-A Palm Beach's win over Daytona on Tuesday and fired a perfect first inning in which he recorded a strikeout.
Gregerson labored some while requiring 20 pitches, 10 of which found the strike zone, to get through his one frame. However, he's now put together back-to-back scoreless rehab appearances, and Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports that manager Mike Shildt feels Gregerson's shoulder has tolerated the minor-league work well thus far. Following his third appearance overall Tuesday, Langosch notes the team will now reevaluate whether Gregerson is ready to bump up at least one level in competition as he continues to work back toward activation.

Cardinals' Luke Gregerson: Solid in second rehab
Gregerson (shoulder) fired a scoreless sixth inning in High-A Palm Beach's win over Jupiter on Monday, recording a strikeout.
It was the second straight successful rehab appearance for the veteran reliever, who fired eight of 10 pitches for strikes. The efficient performance was a step up from Gregerson's first minor-league outing, when he allowed an earned run on two hits over an inning last Thursday versus this same Jupiter squad. Gregerson may bump up a level or two in competition for at least one more minor-league appearance before being deemed ready for activation.

Gregerson (shoulder) was credited with a hold in High-A Palm Beach's win over Jupiter on Thursday, allowing an earned run on two hits over an inning.
Gregerson fired 18 pitches overall, 13 of which found the strike zone. The veteran reliever is trying to put his lingering shoulder woes behind him, with his current rehab assignment presumably the final hurdle before activation at the big-league level. Assuming there's no residual setbacks from Thursday's activity, Gregerson will likely see action again in the minors at some point in the next several days.
