  • Dodgers' Mike Montgomery: Signs MiLB deal with LAD

Montgomery signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Tuesday, Alex Freedman with the Oklahoma City Dodgers reports. Montgomery will report to Triple-A, but it's unclear when he'll make his debut with Oklahoma City, Freedman notes. The left-hander struggled to a 6.72 ERA with Triple-A Syracuse last year, and he hasn't found much MLB success over the past few campaigns. He'll provide some organizational depth over the second half of the 2023 season.

  • Mets' Mike Montgomery: Signs minor-league deal with Mets

Montgomery joined the Mets on a minor-league contract Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. The 32-year-old lefty owns a 3.84 ERA in 541 career MLB innings, but it's been several years since he pitched at that level. He struggled to a 4.95 ERA in 2019 and then threw just 5.1 innings in 2020. He spent last season with the KBO's Samsung Lions but didn't fare well there, either, posting a 5.26 ERA and getting suspended 20 games for throwing a rosin bag at an umpire.

Montgomery has made four starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season and has posted a 7.56 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 16.2 innings.

Montgomery intends to opt out of his minor-league deal with the Yankees on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. The 31-year-old inked a minor-league pact with New York in early April, and it apparently included a June 1 opt out if he wasn't in the majors. • Mets' Mike Montgomery: Stretching out for multiple roles

The Mets plan to stretch Montgomery out so they can utilize him in multiple roles this season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Montgomery could be in a position to make the team due to Carlos Carrasco's (hamstring) extended absence to begin the season. While he likely wouldn't immediately slot into the rotation, Montgomery could be called upon as a spot starter if more injuries befall the team's pitchers. Assuming the team has enough depth to maintain a starting five without Montgomery, he could also serve as a multi-inning reliever.

  • Mets' Mike Montgomery: Catches on with Mets

Montgomery signed a minor-league contract Sunday with the Mets that includes an invitation to big-league spring training. Montgomery could compete for a back-end spot in the rotation or a long-relief role out of the bullpen this spring after working as a swingman for the Royals, Cubs and Mariners over parts of each of the past six seasons. While struggling with a lat injury in 2020, Montgomery was limited to only three appearances for Kansas City, giving up three earned runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings.

  • Mike Montgomery: Heads to open market

Montgomery elected free agency Friday instead of accepting an outright assignment to the minors. Montgomery missed most of the 2020 campaign with a lat strain, throwing just 5.1 innings. After posting a 3.35 ERA from 2016 through 2018, he'll hit the open market as a 31-year-old who's managed a 4.95 ERA over the last two seasons.

  • Royals' Mike Montgomery: Transferred to 45-day IL

Montgomery (lat) was transferred to the 45-day injured list Friday. Montgomery struggled in his only outing of the year before landing on the 10-day injured list with a strained lat in late July, The injury was evidently rather serious, as he'll now be out until very late in the season, if he returns at all.

  • Royals' Mike Montgomery: Heads to injured list

Montgomery was placed on the injured list with a strained lat Tuesday. Montgomery's poor health could partially explain his poor season debut, in which he allowed five runs (three earned) in just two innings in a start against the Tigers. It's not clear when he's expected to return.

  • Royals' Mike Montgomery: Coughs up five runs

Montgomery allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits Monday while striking out one batter in the win over Detroit. He did not factor into the decision. Montgomery allowed all five runs in a brutal second frame, including a three-run blast from JaCoby Jones. Fortunately, the Royals caught fire at the plate, scoring 14 runs and preventing the 31-year-old from being tagged with a loss. Montgomery should take the mound again Sunday afternoon at home against the White Sox.

He'll likely have a chance to get back on track in the Royals' rotation in 2020.

  • Royals' Mike Montgomery: Posts no-decision in loss

Montgomery did not factor into the decision during Wednesday's loss to the Braves, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four across 4.2 innings. After recording two outs in the fifth inning, Montgomery quickly unraveled. He walked Ozzie Albies, then gave up an RBI double to Josh Donaldson and an RBI single to Nick Markakis before getting yanked. The left-hander was making his 13th start for Kansas City, during which he went just 2-7. Even still, Montgomery has a good chance at returning to the Royals' rotation next season. He finishes the year with a 4.64 ERA and 1.55 WHIP across 33 appearances.

  • Royals' Mike Montgomery: Struggles again in no-decision

Montgomery did not factor into the decision against Minnesota on Thursday, pitching four innings and giving up five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. While Montgomery's control was vastly improved over his previous appearance in which he allowed five walks, he was roughed up by a potent Twins offense that launched three home runs against him. The frustration seemed to simmer into a boiling point in the fifth inning when Montgomery was ejected -- presumably for arguing balls and strikes -- after surrendering a homer to Mitch Garver. The rough outing marked the third time in Montgomery's last six starts in which he has given up five runs, a period in which his ERA has ballooned from 3.68 to 5.00. He'll look for better results when he takes on Atlanta on Wednesday at home in his next scheduled start.

  • Royals' Mike Montgomery: Can't find plate in loss

Montgomery (3-9) took the loss Saturday as the Royals fell 6-1 to the Astros, giving up two runs on five hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out one. The southpaw threw only 48 of 86 pitches for strikes, but despite the parade of baserunners, Montgomery did a solid job limiting the damage. Unfortunately, he had little margin for error with Zack Greinke in top form for Houston. Montgomery will carry a 4.70 ERA and 62:30 K:BB through 82.1 innings into his next start Thursday in Minnesota.
