  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Lasts four innings at Coors Field

Gibson didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Colorado, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks across four innings. He struck out four. Gibson failed to pitch into the fifth inning for the first time in 13 starts. Three of his four hits allowed went for extra bases, including a two-run home run by Charlie Blackmon. Gibson has allowed nine home runs in his last eight starts, posting a 4.98 ERA during that stretch. With three games left on the schedule for St. Louis, Thursday's outing was likely the last we'll see of Gibson in 2024. He finishes the season with an 8-8 record, a 4.24 ERA and a 151:68 K:BB.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Takes loss in quality start

Gibson (8-8) took the loss Friday as the Cardinals fell 5-1 to the Guardians, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out two. A Thomas Saggese throwing error allowed Gibson to barely qualify for his 13th quality start of the season, but he once again didn't get much run support. The right-hander has only one win since the All-Star break, going 1-5 over his last 11 outings despite a respectable 4.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB through 64 innings. Gibson will try to close out his season on a high note next weekend on the road in San Francisco.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Fades late in loss

Gibson (8-7) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks over 5.1 innings as the Cardinals were downed 7-2 by the Blue Jays. He struck out one. The right-hander was locked in a 1-1 pitchers' duel with Jose Berrios through five innings. Gibson walked two batters to load the bases with one out in the sixth before an error charged to Masyn Winn helped open the floodgates. While Saturday's unearned runs cushioned the blow to his ERA, Gibson has been tagged with at least five runs in three of his last six starts. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Guardians.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Excellent in no-decision

Gibson allowed three hits and three walks while striking out nine over 6.2 shutout innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Saturday. Gibson dueled with Logan Gilbert, throwing 112 pitches (63 strikes) in his first scoreless outing since June 14. It's an encouraging effort for Gibson, who struggled to a 5.77 ERA over 34.1 innings in August. The veteran starter has a 4.20 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 143:59 K:BB through 154.1 innings over 27 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be a road start at Toronto. Gibson should get a little extra rest down the stretch with the Cardinals expected to go to a six-man rotation starting next week when Lance Lynn (knee) comes off the injured list.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Goes seven innings in win

Gibson (8-6) earned the win against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with six strikeouts over seven innings. Gibson tossed three separate 1-2-3 innings and earned his first win since July 7. While he threw just 55 of 93 pitches for strikes, he didn't issue a walk -- this was only the second outing in which the veteran didn't walk a batter this season. On the year, he owns a 4.39 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 134:56 K:BB across 147.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Mariners next weekend.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Hammered for seven runs

Gibson (7-6) allowed seven runs on five hits and four walks over 4.1 innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Padres. Gibson coughed up a two-run shot to Manny Machado in the first inning and set the tone for a poor performance. The Padres scored another pair in the third inning before piling on four more runs in the fifth. Gibson has given up 15 earned runs over 14.1 innings in his last three starts, driving his season ERA up from 3.99 to 4.54 in the process. Since his last win July 7, he's gone 0-3 with a 5.86 ERA over eight outings. Gibson is projected for a road matchup with the Yankees this weekend.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Gives up two runs Wednesday

Gibson allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Brewers on Wednesday. Gibson induced three double plays over the first four innings to cover his mistakes. The Brewers broke through for single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and Gibson left with the game tied at 2-2. He's posted just two quality starts over six outings since the All-Star break, allowing a total of 18 runs (17 earned) across 34.2 innings in that span. For the season, the veteran right-hander has a 4.22 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 126:52 K:BB through 136.1 innings over 24 starts. Gibson's next start is projected to come at home versus the Padres.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Roughed up by Reds

Gibson (7-5) took the loss against Cincinnati on Wednesday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings. Gibson was particularly hurt by the long ball, as the Reds scored their first six runs by way of four homers, including two by Jonathan India. Prior to Wednesday, Gibson had been pretty good at keeping the ball in the park, posting a 1.0 HR/9 on the season and surrendering just two homers over his previous six starts. Gibson's problem with home runs Wednesday may thus prove to be just an aberration, and he'll look to bounce back in his next start, which tentatively lines up to be at home against Milwaukee.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Allows two runs in no-decision

Gibson did not factor into the decision in Thursday's loss to the Rays, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six. Both runs charged to Gibson came across in the opening frame after he surrendered back-to-back hits to open the contest, followed by a two-run single from Dylan Carlson with two outs. The right-hander was able to keep the Rays off the board over the next five innings however, generating 11 whiffs while posting at least six strikeouts for the third time in his last four starts. Gibson is still looking for his first win since July 7, though he has managed to go six or more innings in three of his five outings over that span.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Strikes out seven in no-decision

Gibson did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-4 win against the Cubs, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Gibson allowed four runs over his first two innings but rebounded with five scoreless frames. The veteran was efficient, throwing 65 of 96 pitches for strikes and retiring the final seven batters he faced, but he has now yielded three earned runs or more in seven of his past 10 starts and has not won a game since July 7. On the year, he owns a 4.04 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 109:47 K:BB across 120.1 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Rays next week.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Takes loss Saturday

Gibson (7-4) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Nationals. Gibson has posted a 17:9 K:BB over 20.2 innings across his last four starts, allowing 10 runs in that span. That's just a little worse than his 3.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 102:46 K:BB for the year, marks he's achieved in 113.1 innings across 20 starts. The veteran right-hander is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Cubs.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Fans six in quality start

Gibson came away with a no-decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Atlanta, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out six. The veteran right-hander needed exactly 100 pitches (66 strikes) to record his ninth quality start of the season, but Gibson saw his eighth win slip away after he left the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning in a game the Cardinals eventually lost in 10. Gibson hadn't lasted more than five frames in an outing in over a month, so the rest afforded by the All-Star break appears to have done him some good. He'll take a 3.99 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 102:43 K:BB through 108.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Nationals.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Peppered in no-decision

Gibson came away with a no-decision in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs, giving up four runs on 10 hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out three. All four runs scored in the second inning as Chicago batted around, with the biggest blow being a two-run shot by Miguel Amaya. Gibson wound up exiting after 97 pitches (56 strikes) as he failed to last more than five innings for the fourth straight start, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 7.50 ERA, 2.11 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB in 18 innings. The veteran righty will try to use the All-Star break to regroup, but there are warning signs his numbers could continue to regress after a promising start to 2024 -- his 91.0 mph average velocity on his fastball would be his lowest since 2016, while his 9.5 percent walk rate would be his highest over a full season since 2018.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Picks up seventh win

Gibson (7-3) earned the win Sunday over the Nationals, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight. Gibson got through the first five innings surrendering just two runs but allowed the first three hitters to reach in the sixth before getting pulled. The veteran has won three of his last four starts and has had quality starts in four of his last seven outings. The 36-year-old has helped stabilize the Cardinals rotation -- he has a 3.96 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through 97.2 innings.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Strikes out eight in win

Gibson (6-3) earned the win against the Pirates on Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over five innings. Gibson was cruising early, striking out the side in each of the second and fourth innings, but he allowed four runs on two homers in the fifth. He bounced back with his control after walking five batters in his most recent start Wednesday, but he was pulled after a season-low 79 pitches and has surrendered four earned runs in back-to-back outings. On the season, the veteran owns a 3.88 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 85:37 K:BB over 92.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup against the Nationals this weekend.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Poor control in loss

Gibson (5-3) allowed four runs on four hits and five walks while striking out four over four innings to take the loss versus Atlanta in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. Gibson made his first start since June 14 -- a stint on the bereavement list, a bout of back tightness and a rainout combined to keep him out of game action for 12 days. He wasn't sharp, throwing 50 of 87 pitches for strikes Wednesday, with the five walks being a season high. This was his first loss since April 13 and the first time he's given up more than three runs since May 17. Gibson has a 3.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 77:36 K:BB over 87.2 innings across 15 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at Pittsburgh.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Tuesday's start postponed

Gibson and the Cardinals won't face Atlanta on Tuesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Tuesday's game will be made up via a doubleheader Wednesday, and Gibson will take the mound for Game 1. The 36-year-old righty threw seven scoreless innings during his most recent start, though back tightness caused him to miss his last turn through the rotation.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Confirmed for Tuesday

The Cardinals list Gibson (back) as their probable starter for Tuesday's game against Atlanta at Busch Stadium. After coming off the bereavement list Wednesday, Gibson had been scheduled to start the Cardinals' series finale versus the Marlins later in the day, but he ended up being scratched shortly before opening pitch due to his back tightening up on him while he was going through his pregame routine. Matthew Liberatore was called upon for a spot start Wednesday in his stead, but Gibson looks like he'll be ready to go for his next turn through the Cardinals rotation. The veteran right-hander has submitted quality starts in three of his last five outings while turning in a 2.20 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over that stretch.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Likely to start Tuesday

Gibson (back) is likely to make his next scheduled start Tuesday against Atlanta, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Gibson was a late scratch from Wednesday's start in Miami due to back tightness. He will play catch Thursday to determine whether he could be available in relief for that game, but that's viewed as unlikely. Instead of just pushing his next start back a couple days, the Cardinals seem content to effectively skip his turn and have him ready to go Tuesday.

  • Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Says his back is fine

Gibson said Thursday that he feels fine after being scratched from a scheduled start Wednesday in Miami due to back tightness, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. The pitcher even said he's hoping to pitch in relief Thursday against the Giants, although that seems unlikely. It's not clear when Gibson might make his next start, but it sounds like a stint on the injured list can safely be ruled out.
