Ryan Goins: Announces retirement
Goins announced his retirement from baseball Tuesday.
Goins hadn't appeared in a major-league game since 2020 and did not play at any level of pro ball in 2023. The 35-year-old infielder finishes with a career .228/.278/.333 batting line in 555 big-league games spread between the Blue Jays, Royals and White Sox.

Royals' Ryan Goins: Headed back to Kansas City
Goins signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Tuesday.
It's something of a homecoming for Goins, who played for the Royals in 2018. Goins has spent the last two seasons at Triple-A Gwinnett in the Braves organization and is likely headed to Triple-A Omaha to start 2023. The veteran infielder will turn 35 in a couple weeks.

Ryan Goins: Headed to free agency
Goins became a free agent Monday.
Goins lost his place on the 40-man roster in August after Ehire Adrianza returned from illness, and he ultimately cleared waivers to finish out the season at Triple-A Gwinnett. He appeared in 90 contests at Triple-A in 2022, slashing .216/.244/.256 with 25 RBI and 22 runs scored.

Braves' Ryan Goins: Clears waivers
Atlanta outrighted Goins to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.
Goins is expected to report to Gwinnett after he officially cleared waivers, a development that doesn't come as a surprise given his status as a light-hitting 34-year-old journeyman infielder. During his recent six-day stint in the majors with Atlanta, Goins didn't log a plate appearance.

Braves' Ryan Goins: Loses 40-man spot
Atlanta designated Goins for assignment Monday.
As anticipated, Goins' stay on the 40-man roster was a brief one, as he lost his spot Monday with Atlanta bringing back Ehire Adrianza (illness) from the 10-day injured list. While serving as a utility man during his six-day stint with Atlanta, the 34-year-old Goins didn't see any game action.

Braves' Ryan Goins: Returns to majors
Atlanta selected Goins' contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
The addition of Goins provides Atlanta with a utility option in the infield after Ehire Adrianza (illness) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list over the weekend before being transferred to the 10-day IL. Vaughn Grissom, Dansby Swanson and Austin Riley are still expected to see the overwhelming majority of starts at second base, shortstop and third base, respectively, so Goins' opportunities with Atlanta are likely to be scarce while he's up with the club. The 34-year-old was hitting .220/.249/.271 in 250 plate appearances at Gwinnett this season.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Clears waivers
Goins cleared waivers and was outrighted to the team's alternate training site Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
Despite his demotion, the infielder will join the team's taxi squad as the White Sox continue their road trip. Goins has appeared in 14 games this season, failing to record a hit in nine at-bats.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Cast off 40-man
Goins was designated for assignment Monday.
The White Sox will swap in Yolmer Sanchez for Goins as the team's bench infielder going forward. Goins was 0-for-9 with one strikeout in his time with the big club.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Contract purchased by White Sox
Goins' contract was purchased by the White Sox on Monday.
The 32-year-old has carved out a career as a utility man over parts of seven big-league seasons, but with a career .230/.279/.335 slash line, he's unlikely to be anything more than that this year. He'll replaced Cheslor Cuthbert on the active roster, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Signs with White Sox
Goins signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
Goins will report to the team's alternative camp site in Schaumburg, Illinois, where he'll remain as organizational infield depth. The 32-year-old hit .250/.333/.347 across 52 games with Chicago in 2019.

Ryan Goins: Hits free agency
Goins was released by the Athletics on Sunday.
He was in camp on a minor-league deal and clearly wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster, so perhaps the decision was mutual. Either way, Goins will now look to offer infield depth to a different big-league club.

Athletics' Ryan Goins: Included in 60-man pool
Goins will report to Oakland when teams resume workouts this week after the Athletics announced Sunday that he would be part of their 60-man roster pool.
Goins previously attended spring training on a minor-league deal and wasn't a safe bet to break camp with the big club, but the expanded roster pool will allow the veteran infielder to stick around with Oakland. He'll likely be in line for a depth role and could need an injury or two to hit the Athletics' middle infield before he sees regular starts.

Athletics' Ryan Goins: Headed to Oakland
Goins signed a minor-league contract with the Athletics on Monday, which includes an invitation to spring training.
Goins became a free agent at the end of October after being outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte, though it didn't take long for him to latch on with a new team. He hit .250 with two home runs and 10 RBI over 52 games with the White Sox in 2019 and has appeared in the big leagues at some point in each of the last seven seasons.

Ryan Goins: To become free agent
Goins was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday and will become a minor-league free agent following the conclusion of the World Series.
Goins got into 52 games for the White Sox in 2019, hitting .250/333/.347. His 86 wRC+ was the best mark of his seven-year big-league career, so he'll likely be stuck looking for a minor-league contract heading into his age-32 season.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Starts in right field
Goins went 0-for-4 while batting leadoff in Thursday's 7-1 win over Cleveland.
Right field in the White Sox's lineup has been a revolving door for much of the season and even more so since Jon Jay (hip) landed on the injury list. After Daniel Palka made a couple of hitless starts there Tuesday and Wednesday, Goins got an opportunity. And with Leury Garcia getting a breather, he slotted in at leadoff. The White Sox have no shortage of mediocre options to play there for the rest of the season.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Picks up third straight start
Goins will start at shortstop and bat second Thursday against the Twins.
After serving as the designated hitter and manning right field the previous two days, Goins will cover shortstop for a resting Tim Anderson in the series finale. The DH spot probably represents Goins' most realistic path to an everyday role, as his main competition for those duties, Matt Skole, has posted an underwhelming .526 OPS since being called up from Triple-A Charlotte earlier this month.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Fills in for Garcia
Goins entered Sunday's game after Leury Garcia was removed due to a lower leg injury.
Goins pinch ran for Garcia and stayed in the game to play left field. With Eloy Jimenez back in the lineup following a hip injury -- he served as the designated hitter over the weekend -- he should slot in at left field after Monday's off day and move Goins further into a depth role, unless Garcia's injury turns out to be serious.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: To see downturn in playing time
Goins, who is not in Thursday's lineup against the Rangers, will likely see diminished playing time going forward now that Yoan Moncada (hamstring) has been activated.
Moncada missed over three weeks with the injury, and Goins hit .253 with zero home runs and zero steals in 79 at-bats over that stretch. Yolmer Sanchez, who is starting at second base Thursday, apparently has a leg up on Goins, who appears to be assuming a bench role going forward.

White Sox's Ryan Goins: Bags three hits Monday
Goins went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 6-4 win over the Twins.
Goins remains in the starting lineup as a replacement for the injured Yoan Moncada (hamstring) for a few more days. Moncada is due back Thursday.
