It feels like not all that long ago that Bryce Harper was anointed "Baseball's Chosen One" while gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated as a 16-year-old, and similar to LeBron James in the NBA, Harper has managed to exceed seemingly impossible expectations. He reached 30 homers last season for the fifth time in his career while also surpassing 40 doubles for a second time. After an elbow injury and subsequent Tommy John surgery necessitated a full-time move to first base in 2023, Harper made only one trip to the injured list last season due to a low-grade hamstring strain. He played through wrist and elbow discomfort later in the campaign, which led to 30-game homerless drought. A two-time MVP and eight-time All-Star, Harper is still in search of that elusive World Series title, and that will be his and the Phillies' primary motivation in 2025. Expect well-rounded production around some missed time over the course of the long season.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Willing to move back to OF if asked

Harper said recently that he would be willing to move back to right field if the Phillies were able to acquire an impact first baseman at the trade deadline, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported this week that Harper told the Phillies over the offseason he would be open to shifting to the outfield if the club could acquire a marquee first baseman. That never came close to happening, but the offer remains on the table should an opportunity present itself. Harper has turned himself into an excellent defensive first baseman and will, in all likelihood, remain at that position over the long haul, but having the flexibility and willingness to move back to right field could come in handy, both for the Phillies and for anyone with fantasy shares in the 32-year-old star.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Returning to action Friday

Harper (triceps) will return to the Phillies' lineup for Friday's Grapefruit League contest against the Red Sox, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. He had a scheduled day off Thursday and will be back in there Friday.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Bruises tricep, should be fine

Harper sustained a bruised right tricep after getting hit by a pitch in Wednesday's 9-6 win over the Blue Jays, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that he's "not over concerned" about the injury, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. A Richard Lovelady offering caught Harper on the arm during a sixth-inning plate appearance, and the first baseman was immediately pulled from the game for a pinch runner. While Harper will be re-evaluated Thursday, the expectation is that he'll be fine moving forward. Harper was not going to play Thursday, regardless, and he could be back in the lineup as soon as Friday versus the Red Sox.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Exits after hit-by-pitch

Harper was removed from Wednesday's Grapefruit League contest versus the Blue Jays after being hit on the right biceps by a pitch, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Harper was making his third plate appearance of the day when he was struck by a Richard Lovelady offering in the top of the sixth inning, so his day was likely going to be over, anyway. The Phillies should provide an update on Harper's condition shortly.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Set for Grapefruit League debut

Harper (illness) will bat third and start at first base in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. Harper missed some time at the beginning of last week while recovering from an illness, but he appears to be fully healthy now and will make his spring debut Wednesday. The 32-year-old is heading into his second season as the Phillies' full-time first baseman after he slashed .285/.373/.525 with 30 home runs, 87 RBI, 85 runs and seven steals across 145 games in 2024.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: In Thursday's lineup

Harper (elbow) will start at first base and bat third Thursday against the Marlins. The 31-year-old stayed in the game after being hit by a pitch in the left elbow during the first inning, though he was replaced by a pinch hitter for his second plate appearance. Harper is being further evaluated, which could include medical imaging. He should be considered day-to-day until more information is available.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Playing through wrist, elbow issues

Harper revealed last week that he's been playing through a sore wrist and sore right elbow, MLB.com reports. Harper was seen wincing after taking a swing in Tuesday's win over the Blue Jays, but he stayed in that game and is back in the lineup Wednesday. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that Harper's elbow "grabs a little bit" on swings and misses, but he said his first baseman is "fine" and there are no current plans to give him rest. Harper noted last week that he's battled wrist soreness since May, while the elbow issue is more recent. He's slashing .307/.373/.465 since Aug. 1 but hasn't homered since Aug. 9.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Back in action Thursday

Harper (hand) will start at first base and bat third Thursday against the Dodgers. • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Won't start Wednesday

Harper (hand) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. In his return from the 10-day injured list for Tuesday's 10-1 win over the Dodgers, Harper experienced no renewed complications with the hamstring injury that had previously sidelined him, but he suffered a bruise to his glove hand when it was struck by a Freddie Freeman line drive. Harper was still able to take part in pregame activities Wednesday, so the Phillies could just be holding him out of the lineup as a matter of precaution. Alec Bohm will cover first base in Harper's stead.

  • Phillies' Bryce Harper: Nursing bruised hand

Harper is questionable to play Wednesday versus the Dodgers after bruising his left hand during Tuesday's 10-1 win, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. A line drive hit by Freddie Freeman caught Harper in a bad spot on his glove hand, and Harper is apparently still dealing with some soreness Wednesday. He will test the hand out in the batting cage before the Phillies determine if he can start. Even if Harper is withheld from the lineup Wednesday, the injury wouldn't appear to be a long-term concern.
