Hager signed a minor-league contract with Chicago on Monday, per MLB's transaction log. Hager will join Triple-A Iowa to serve as organizational depth. He's appeared in only one game this season in the Arizona Complex League, and his last big-league action dates back to the 2022 campaign with the D-Backs. Hager was released by the Diamondbacks on Thursday. Hager saw a little action in the majors from 2021-22 but has spent all of 2023 at Triple-A Reno, posting a .716 OPS with three homers in 56 games. The 30-year-old will now catch on with another organization.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake Hager: Back in Arizona on MiLB pact

The Diamondbacks announced Saturday that Hager was re-signed on a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to MLB spring training. Hager concluded the 2022 season as a member of Arizona's 40-man roster and 28-man active roster before being outrighted to Triple-A Reno in early November. Rather than electing free agency and trying his luck elsewhere, the 29-year-old will stick in Arizona's organization and compete for a utility role in spring training. During his sparse action in the majors in 2022, Hager slashed .240/.345/.280 across 59 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake Hager: Returns to reserve role

Hager is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs. Hager went a collective 1-for-9 with two walks and an RBI while starting each of the past three games at second base, but he looks set to move into a full-time reserve role moving forward after Ketel Marte (hand) was cleared to return to the lineup Thursday. Marte was unavailable once again Wednesday but said the hand is feeling better, and he could be ready to go Thursday against the Cubs. Hager may stick around for now while the Diamondbacks deal with a mini-outbreak of COVID.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake Hager: Called up, starts Game 1 on Tuesday

The Diamondbacks selected Hager's contract from Triple-A Reno ahead of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Dodgers in Los Angeles. He'll start at second base in Game 1, batting ninth. Though he'll get the nod at the keystone in the first game of the twin bill while Ketel Marte rests, Hager has professional experience at every position except catcher and pitcher. He'll thus offer the Diamondbacks some versatility off the bench, but it's unclear if he'll stick with the big club beyond the doubleheader.

The Diamondbacks optioned Hager to Triple-A Reno on Monday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
