Brian Goodwin: Heads to open market
Goodwin became a free agent Friday after declining an outright assignment to the minors.
Goodwin was a serviceable part-time player for the White Sox last season, hitting .221/.319/.374 (good for a 94 wRC+) in 271 trips to the plate while spending time at all three outfield spots. He should be able to latch on somewhere in a similar role this winter but has little upside to be anything more than that given that he's heading into his age-31 season.

White Sox's Brian Goodwin: Heads to IL
The White Sox placed Goodwin on the 10-day injured list with lower-back spasms Sunday.
It doesn't appear to be a major injury, so Goodwin figures to be healthy by the time ALDS rosters are set. The outfielder had gone 0-for-17 in his last five games before the injury, and his season-long slash line of .221/.319/.693 is underwhelming. Regardless, Goodwin serves as a valuable depth piece and should be active in the postseason if he's at full health.

White Sox's Brian Goodwin: Playing time tailing off
Goodwin will serve as the White Sox's designated hitter and will bat ninth Monday against the Tigers.
Though he's in the starting nine for the series opener in Detroit, the lefty-hitting Goodwin may have moved into a reserve role at this point. He was on the bench for three of the White Sox's last four games, and two of those absences came against right-handed starting pitchers. Gavin Sheets, Leury Garcia and perhaps even rookie Romy Gonzalez could be ahead of Goodwin in the pecking order for outfield work, and Goodwin's playing time could become even more scarce when Andrew Vaughn (back) returns from the injured list. Goodwin is batting .200 with five extra-base hits in 31 games since the beginning of August.

White Sox's Brian Goodwin: Enters for Eloy
Goodwin replaced an injured Eloy Jimenez (knee) and went 1-for-2 with two RBI in Tuesday's 6-3 win over Oakland.
Jimenez got clipped while sitting in the dugout by a foul ball off the bat of teammate Andrew Vaughn during the second inning. He was on the dugout floor for nearly a minute before popping up. He remained in the game but was eventually replaced by Goodwin after the fifth inning. X-rays were negative, but Jimenez is day-to-day heading into Wednesday's game. If the White Sox choose to play it cautious, then Vaughn could replace him in left field with Goodwin starting in right.

White Sox's Brian Goodwin: More playing time expected
Goodwin started in right field and went 0-for-2 with a walk, a hit by pitch and a stolen base in Monday's 5-2 win over the Athletics.
Goodwin should see an uptick in playing time after the White Sox placed Adam Engel on the injured list with a shoulder injury. That removes one competitor for at-bats in right field, leaving Goodwin and Andrew Vaughn. If it becomes a platoon, then the left-handed-hitting Goodwin should take on a majority of starts while Engel is sidelined.
