  • Rougned Odor: Cut loose by Yankees

The Yankees released Odor on Aug. 1.

Signed to a minor-league deal April 10, Odor was assigned to the Florida Complex League and was immediately placed on the 7-day injured list when rookie-ball play got underway May 4. Odor never ended up appearing in any games at the FCL level or for another affiliate before the Yankees cut ties with the 30-year-old. If Odor pursues a return to affiliated ball in 2025, he'll likely have to settle for another minor-league deal, though retirement or a move to a foreign league may be a more realistic next step.

  • Yankees' Rougned Odor: Back with Yanks on minors deal

Odor signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Odor signed with Japan's Yomiuri Giants in January but never wound up playing for them. The 30-year-old was last with the Yankees in 2021, posting a .665 OPS with 15 home runs over 102 games, and he posted a similar OPS in 2022 and 2023 with the Orioles and Padres. Odor's contract contains a July 1 opt-out clause.

  • Rougned Odor: Headed to Japan

Odor signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Odor slashed .203/.299/.355 with four homers and 18 RBI across 157 plate appearances with the Padres last season before being released in late July. After failing to draw interest from other MLB clubs, the 29-year-old infielder will attempt to rejuvenate his career in Japan.

  • Rougned Odor: Cut by San Diego

The Padres released Odor on Monday.

Odor was designated for assignment last week and has now officially cleared waivers. Other organizations will probably have some interest in the 29-year-old, though he might have to take a minor-league contract. Over 157 plate appearances with the Padres this season, Odor slashed .210/.306/.370 with four home runs and two stolen bases.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Dropped from 40-man roster

Odor was designated for assignment by the Padres on Tuesday.

This move comes a few weeks after the Padres cut ties with Nelson Cruz. Odor was receiving semi-regular playing time out of the DH spot at one point, but he heads into DFA limbo having registered an overall .210/.306/.370 batting line with four homers and 18 RBI in 59 games (157 plate appearances) for San Diego.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: On bench for afternoon game

Odor will sit for the first portion of Saturday's doubleheader against the Phillies.

Odor has featured regularly against righties of late but hasn't started against a southpaw all season, so it's no surprise to see him on the bench against Ranger Suarez. Odor could return to the lineup for the nightcap against right-hander Taijuan Walker.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: On bench Friday

Odor is not in the lineup Friday against the Mets.

Odor seemed poised for an uptick in playing time when the Padres parted ways with Nelson Cruz earlier this week, but he's now been absent from the starting lineup five out of the last six games. Matt Carpenter will serve as the DH and bat eighth Friday versus the Mets and right-hander Justin Verlander.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Takes seat Wednesday

Odor is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Though he's on the bench for the fourth time in five games, three of the lefty-hitting Odor's absences have come against southpaw pitchers. Odor still appears to have the edge on the final spot in San Diego's regular lineup versus right-handed pitching, even though he owns a modest .214/.307/.393 slash line (96 wRC+) in those matchups on the season.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: On bench versus southpaw

Odor is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

With lefty Andrew Abbott on the hill, the lefty-hitting Odor will retreat to the bench for the series finale. Short-side platoon mate Nelson Cruz will serve as the Padres' designated hitter Sunday in Odor's stead.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Making second straight start

Odor is starting at second base and batting eighth on Friday in Cincinnati.

After starting in right field Thursday, Odor gets the call at his more familiar second base spot Friday. Odor was terrible in April but boasts an .821 OPS since the beginning of May and has seen starts at four different spots, including designated hitter.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Starting Monday

Odor (groin) is starting at second base and batting leadoff Monday versus the Cubs, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Odor will be back in the lineup after exiting Friday's loss early with a groin injury and missing the last two games. The 29-year-old has produced a .310 batting average with three homers, 14 RBI, seven runs scored and two stolen bases over 42 at-bats since May 16.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: May avoid trip to injured list

The Padres believe that Odor (groin) may not need a trip to the injured list, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

As Cassavell notes on his report, this is an unexpected turn of events. Odor left Friday's loss to the Cubs after tweaking his groin while rounding first on a double, and Padres manager Bob Melvin told reporters that it was widely expected that Odor would need a stint on the injured list. The Padres will now wait a few days before making the decision, but the optimism suggests this could be a short stay on the IL if he is placed on the list early next week.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Out as expected against Cubs

Odor (groin) is not in the starting lineup against the Cubs on Saturday.

Odor suffered a left groin strain in Friday's loss to the Cubs, and Padres manager Bob Melvin suggested that Odor was likely to be placed on the 10-day injured list. That hasn't occurred yet, but the infielder will miss Saturday's game as expected. Ha-Seong Kim gets the start at second base and will hit seventh with Odor out.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Diagnosed with left groin strain

Odor suffered a left groin strain during Friday's loss to the Cubs and he's likely to be placed on the 10-day injured list, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

"[Odor] gives us length in the lineup, has been great for us," manager Bob Melvin said after the game. "So, if you lose him for a significant period of time, it's going to hurt." Odor was injured while rounding second on a double. Assuming he does go on the injured list, Ha-Seong Kim -- who had been filling in at third base for Manny Machado -- would likely shift into a regular role at the keystone.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Leaves with apparent injury

Odor left Friday's game against the Cubs with an apparent lower-body injury, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. He had gone 2-for-3 with a run scored before exiting.

Odor doubled into the alley in the eighth inning, but the infielder pulled up lame as he ran the bases. Ha-Seong Kim came in as a pinch runner. For now, Odor should be considered day-to-day.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Goes to bench versus lefty

Odor is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Odor has been occupying a regular spot in the lineup since Manny Machado fractured his left hand May 15 and eventually landed on the injured list, but with southpaw Braxton Garrett on the bump for Miami, the lefty-hitting Odor will retreat to the bench. Jake Cronenworth will fill in at the keystone for Odor, who had gone 6-for-26 with three home runs, a double, a stolen base, 10 RBI and five runs while starting in each of the past six games.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Helping to fill in for Machado

Odor will start at second base and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Yankees.

Odor appears to have emerged as the primary replacement in the infield for Manny Machado, who hadn't played since May 15 due to a hand injury before landing on the 10-day injured list last weekend. The veteran Odor will pick up his fifth consecutive start Sunday, with three coming at the keystone and two coming at third base. Over his nine games in total since Machado exited the lineup, Odor has gone 10-for-31 (.323 average) with two home runs, two stolen bases, 12 RBI and three runs.

Odor is now 9-for-28 with three homers and 14 RBI in his last seven games. The veteran infielder has certainly held his own while filling in for the injured Manny Machado (hand). Odor is now slashing .210/.289/.420 with four home runs and 17 RBI through 90 plate appearances this season.

  • Padres' Rougned Odor: Homers, drives in five in victory

Odor went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer and five RBI in Thursday's 8-6 victory over Washington.

Odor has homered in back-to-back games, giving him three long balls on the season. In his last four games, Odor is 7-for-15 with five extra-base hits and 11 RBI after going 8-for-53 with a .495 OPS to start the season. The veteran infielder is now slashing .221/.303/.426 with 14 RBI over 76 plate appearances while playing a part-time role in San Diego.
