  • Cubs' Dan Straily: Signs split contract with Cubs

Straily signed a split contract with the Cubs on Thursday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. Straily, 35, spent some time at Triple-A Reno in the Diamondbacks organization in 2022 but aside from that has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization since 2020. He last appeared in the majors in 2019 with the Orioles. Straily presumably will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa, although he could initially go to extended spring training or a lower affiliate.

  • Dan Straily: Returns to KBO

The Diamondbacks granted Straily his release from his minor-league deal Monday, allowing him to sign a one-year, $400,000 contract with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports. After failing to win a spot on the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster, Straily had toiled all season at Triple-A Reno, with whom he produced a 6.35 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 53:30 K:BB in 62.1 innings. Since a call-up to the majors wasn't imminent, Straily will instead head to Korea for the second time in his career, and he'll be well-compensated for the remaining three months of the season. The 33-year-old previously led the KBO circuit in strikeouts while pitching for the Giants in 2020.

  • Diamondbacks' Dan Straily: Won't make Opening Day roster

Straily was reassigned to minor-league camp Friday. Straily joined the Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee in February following a successful two-year stint in Korea, but he failed to make his case for a roster spot this spring. His 8.68 ERA in 9.1 Cactus League innings was quite poor, though it did at least come with 12 strikeouts against just three walks. He'll head to the minors to try to prove himself worthy of his first major-league opportunity since 2019.

  • Diamondbacks' Dan Straily: Make auspicious debut

Straily allowed seven runs on nine hits (two home runs) while striking out three over three innings in Saturday's spring game against the Angels. Straily is bidding to be the Diamondbacks' fifth starter, but his debut in an Arizona uniform did not go well. "I came in with the mind-set that I'm going to fill up the strike zone - and as (pitching coach) Brent (Strom) pointed out to me, I did that a little too well," Straily told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "A lot of first-pitch hits, a lot of first-pitch hacking." Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Straily has pitched better on the backfields, but he'll need to make adjustments in terms of pitch mix.

  • Diamondbacks' Dan Straily: Gets MLB chance

Straily signed a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to spring training with Arizona on Thursday. Straily spent the last two seasons in the KBO while serving as a starting pitcher for the Lotte Giants. Across 360.1 total innings in that span, Straily maintained a 3.22 ERA with 369 strikeouts across 360.1 innings. In an interview earlier this winter, Straily specifically mentioned using technology such as Rapsodo to improve his pitches while in the KBO. The last time Straily pitched in the major leagues, he posted a 9.82 ERA across 47.2 innings as a member of the Orioles. However, if he can carry over his recent success, Straily should have the chance to earn a spot with the big-league team given the current state of the Diamondbacks' rotation.

  • Dan Straily: Remains in KBO

Straily has signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract to remain with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Straily had a strong first season in the KBO, going 15-4 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 205 strikeouts in 194.2 innings for the Giants. His return to the KBO is in large part likely a sign of the uncertainty about the length and timing of the 2021 MLB season.

  • Dan Straily: Heads to Korea

Straily signed a contract with the Lotte Giants of the KBO on Friday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. Straily struggled mightily with the Orioles a season ago, accruing a 9.82 ERA and 1.99 WHIP with a 33:22 K:BB over 47.2 frames. He'll look to resurrect his career overseas, and could return to Major League Baseball if he finds success in Korea.

  • Dan Straily: Becomes free agent

Straily elected free agency Tuesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. The veteran has parts of eight big-league seasons under his belt but will almost certainly be looking for a minor-league deal this winter. In 47.2 innings for the Orioles last season, he struggled to a 9.82 ERA while striking out just 14.0 percent of opposing batters.

  • Phillies' Dan Straily: Acquired by Phillies

Straily was traded from the Orioles to the Phillies on Wednesday in exchange for cash, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. It's been a rough year for Straily, who owns a brutal 9.82 ERA, 1.99 WHIP and 33:22 K:BB in 47.2 innings this season. He'll report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he'll serve as organizational pitching depth.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Accepts outright assignment

Straily accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. The decision allows Straily to keep the remainder of his major-league contract but prevents him from seeking opportunities elsewhere. It's not clear that any opportunities were likely to come after he recorded a 9.82 ERA in 47.2 innings for the Orioles to start the season.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Designated for assigment

Straily Joe Trezza of MLB.com on Thursday. He has a 9.82 ERA in 14 games for the Orioles, so this was not a surprising move. Evan Phillips was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Heads to bullpen

Straily will work out of a relief role moving forward, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. Straily hasn't been able to get the job done so far this season as a part of the starting rotation, posting a 9.09 ERA and 1.99 WHIP with an 18:17 K:BB over 34.2 innings. He'll get a chance to turn things around from the bullpen.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Serves up four homers

Straily (1-4) took the loss against the Yankees on Wednesday by allowing six runs on eight hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out two. Straily never managed to fool the Yankees as he generated only two swinging strikes while giving up four home runs, bringing his season total of homers allowed to 14. The 30-year-old hasn't completed five innings during a start since April 20. Straily has a 9.09 ERA, 1.99 WHIP and 18:17 K:BB through seven starts, and lines up to pitch Monday versus the Tigers.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Hit hard in short outing

Straily allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one across 3.1 innings Thursday against the Indians. He did not factor into the decision. Straily had managed a respectable effort through two innings but unraveled in the third inning, allowing four of the first five batters he faced to reach base. After allowing a leadoff hit in the fourth inning and getting one out, Straily was pulled form the game though was ultimately charged with another earned run after Gabriel Ynoa allowed his inherited runner to score. Straily has been horrific through 30.2 innings this season, posting a 1.89 WHIP and 8.51 ERA. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday against the Yankees.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Next outing pushed back

Straily's next start will come during Baltimore's upcoming series with Cleveland, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. Straily was scheduled to start Wednesday's contest, but inclement weather changed the Orioles' pitching plans. He appears in line to toe the rubber for the series opener Thursday, though the team will announce its probable pitchers later in the week.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Roughed up in loss

Straily (1-2) took the loss Friday against the Rays, allowing five runs on nine hits and three walks across 4.1 innings. He struck out two. Straily fell behind early Friday, allowing back-to-back doubles to open the game before settling in and escaping the first inning down 1-0. The right-hander ran into trouble again in the fourth inning; he allowed four runs, highlighted by a Mike Zunino three-run homer. Straily has struggled through six appearances (five starts) for the Orioles, compiling a 7.43 ERA, 1.87 WHIP and 11:10 K:BB through 23 innings. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday against the Red Sox.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Picks up win versus Red Sox

Straily (1-1) allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk across five innings in a victory against the Red Sox on Monday. This was a sight for sore eyes, as Straily began the year allowing five runs in each of his first two starts. His first two outings went so poorly that even after the strong start Monday, Straily still owns a 10.24 ERA. He is also 1-1 with a 1.86 WHIP and two strikeouts in 9.2 innings. Straily's next start should be at home against the Twins on Saturday.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Allows five earned

Straily (0-1) allowed five earned runs on eight hits with no walks and no strikeouts across 3.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Athletics. Straily escaped a jam in the first inning, but allowed at least one run in the subsequent three frames. He didn't have much working for him in the outing, as he allowed four extra-base hits -- two of which were home runs -- and generated only four swinging strikes. He's had a tough time getting up to speed since signing with the Orioles on April 5, surrendering 10 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.

  • Orioles' Dan Straily: Set to start Wednesday

Straily will start Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. The Orioles put Straily in the bullpen after signing him Friday, but Alex Cobb's (back) return to the injured list accelerated his move to the starting rotation. The 30-year-old made his season debut Sunday against the Yankees and gave up five runs -- including two home runs -- over 1.1 innings. Straily threw 44 pitches in that appearance, so it remains unclear whether he'll be available for a typical starter's workload on only two days' rest.

  • Dan Straily: Let go by Miami

Marlins president of baseball operations Mike Hill confirmed Monday that Straily was released by the team rather than designated for assignment, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports. Though Straily was due only $5 million in salary for 2019, the Marlins apparently couldn't find any teams willing to acquire the right-hander after shopping him around. Now that the 30-year-old is officially a free agent, he shouldn't have trouble landing at least a minor-league deal after turning in a cumulative 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 8.0 K/9 across 56 starts with the Marlins the past two seasons. It's possible that a team in need of extra starting-pitching depth even extends Straily the opportunity to fill a back-end rotation spot right away, though it likely wouldn't come with much job security.
