  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Undergoes TJ surgery

Musgrove underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Friday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Following an early exit from his appearance in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series on Oct. 2 due to an elbow injury, an MRI revealed that Musgrove would need to undergo Tommy John surgery before returning to the mound. The timing of his procedure gives him an outside chance to pitch toward the very end of next season, but the 31-year-old righty will most likely be sidelined until 2026.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Needs Tommy John surgery

General manager A.J. Preller said Friday that Musgrove (elbow) has a UCL injury in his right elbow and will require Tommy John surgery, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Musgrove underwent an MRI on his right elbow Thursday after injuring it during Wednesday's wild-card start against Atlanta. The MRI revealed a UCL injury, and the 31-year-old right-hander will have to undergo Tommy John surgery, which will keep him out of action through the 2024 postseason and most, if not all, of 2025. With Musgrove out for the rest of the playoffs, Martin Perez -- who did not pitch in the wild-card series -- is the next man up in the Padres' rotation behind Dylan Cease, Michael King and Yu Darvish.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Ruled out for NLDS

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Friday that Musgrove (elbow) will not pitch in the NLDS versus the Dodgers, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

It's not a surprise after Musgrove had to depart his wild-card start against Atlanta in the fourth inning due to right elbow tightness. Shildt did not reveal the results of an MRI on Musgrove's elbow and refused to speculate on the pitcher's potential availability for the NLCS and beyond, should the Padres advance.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Undergoing MRI on elbow Thursday

Musgrove will undergo and MRI on his injured right elbow Thursday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Musgrove had to depart Wednesday's start versus Atlanta due to what the Padres are referring to now simply as right elbow tightness. Initial testing on his UCL came back clean, but more clarity will be available following Thursday's exam. For what it's worth, Musgrove said the discomfort he felt Wednesday was "very different" from the pain he experienced due to a bone spur in his elbow which sent him to the injured list twice earlier this season. The pitcher also revealed that he'd been battling some soreness in the elbow prior to the outing. If Musgrove needs to be replaced on the NLDS roster, Martin Perez is a candidate to fill that slot.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Battling elbow tightness

Musgrove left his start Wednesday in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series versus Atlanta due to right elbow tightness.

Musgrove's elbow began to affect his velocity in the fourth inning of Wednesday's contest, forcing him out after just 3.2 frames of one-run ball. There's no telling if he'll be available for the NLDS if San Diego advances past Atlanta. It's worth noting that the 31-year-old has already landed on the IL twice this season due to elbow-related injuries.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Exits with trainer

Musgrove was removed from Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against Atlanta on Wednesday due to an apparent injury, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Musgrove was visited on the mound by a trainer after displaying decreased velocity in the fourth inning. It's unclear what exactly the right-hander is dealing with, but the Padres will take a closer look at him and should offer an update on his status in the near future. Prior to his removal, he allowed one earned run on one hit while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Third straight quality start

Musgrove did not factor into the decision in a loss to the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 6.1 innings while striking out six.

Musgrove retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and cruised through the first six innings before allowing a two-run home run to Max Muncy in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. The right-hander was eventually relieved by Tanner Scott with one out in the frame, but not before logging his third consecutive quality start. Musgrove has also recorded at least six strikeouts in each of last five outings while issuing only four free passes over that stretch. He now carries a 2.51 ERA in September to go along with a 2-1 record.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Six more scoreless innings

Musgrove allowed four hits and struck out nine without walking a batter over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Friday.

Musgrove has turned in six scoreless frames in three of his four outings in September. The nine strikeouts matched his season high for the third time, and this was also the sixth time in 18 starts he avoided walking a batter. Musgrove trimmed his ERA to 3.95 with a 1.19 WHIP and 95:22 K:BB across 93.1 innings. He's lined up to make his last start of the regular season on the road versus the Dodgers.
