  • Hyun Jin Ryu: Signs eight-year KBO deal

Ryu signed an eight-year, $12.4 million contract Wednesday with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports. Ryu will turn 37 years old in March, and after signing a long-term deal overseas, his time in the majors is almost assuredly over. Assuming Ryu's deal doesn't contain an early out clause that would allow him to explore opportunities in North America, he'll finish his MLB career with a 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 11 seasons spent with the Dodgers and Blue Jays.

  • Hyun Jin Ryu: Headed for KBO

Ryu is expected to finalize a four-year contract with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization in the coming days, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports. Ryu started 11 games for the Blue Jays this past season after completing his recovery from June 2022 Tommy John surgery, posting a 3.46 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with a 38:14 K:BB across 52 innings. The 36-year-old became a free agent this offseason, and after apparently not receiving any MLB offers to his liking, he's elected to return to the KBO, where he began his professional career before heading to North America in 2013. Though the length of his deal with Hanwha isn't known, given his advancing age, Ryu's MLB career could well be over.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Excluded from wild-card roster

Ryu is not on the Blue Jays' AL Wild Card Series roster, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. Ryu wasn't going to get a start in the series and has made just one relief appearance in his entire career, so his exclusion from the roster isn't a surprise. He could potentially be added should the Jays advance to the ALDS.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Lasts just three innings

Ryu did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits over three innings against the Rays. He struck out one and did not issue any walks. Ryu got knocked around early, giving up one run on three hits in the first inning as the Rays took an early lead. He would allow another four hits over the next two frames before being relieved by Trevor Richards to open the fourth. The lefty has now failed to make it through five innings in three consecutive starts, allowing six or more hits in each of those outings. Ryu also recorded just one strikeout on the day, which marked his season low.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Rocked by Rays

Ryu came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 7-6 loss to the Rays, coughing up five runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two. Two of the long balls came in the first inning, as Ryu served up a solo shot to Yandy Diaz and a three-run blast to Josh Lowe. The veteran southpaw avoided his fourth loss of the season when the Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, only for closer Jordan Romano to blow the save in the ninth. Ryu's failed to complete five innings in two straight starts, and he has a 4.32 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB through 25 innings in September. With the Jays in a dogfight for a wild-card spot, he may need to step things up in his final outing of the regular season -- a rematch with the Rays back in Toronto next weekend.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Goes 4.2 innings vs. Red Sox

Ryu did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing six hits and two walks over 4.2 scoreless innings against Boston. He struck out two. Ryu held the Red Sox off the board Sunday, though he wasn't able to make it through the fifth inning after throwing 83 pitches. While the Jays continue to monitor the left-hander's pitch count, Ryu's provided a steadying presence in the rotation since returning from Tommy John surgery in early August, going 3-3 with a 2.62 ERA in nine starts (44.2 innings). He's currently scheduled for a road matchup with the Rays in his next outing.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Punches out five in loss

Ryu (3-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over six innings in a 6-3 loss to the Rangers. He struck out five. Ryu had his first quality start in Tuesday's outing, as it was his first time going more than five innings this season. The 36-year-old has been solid since returning from Tommy John surgery on Aug. 1, posting a 2.93 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB in 40 innings. Ryu is slated to start at Boston in his next outing.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Falls to Oakland

Ryu (3-2) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings in a 5-2 loss against the Athletics. He struck out five. Ryu pitched well Wednesday, but Carlos Perez's two-run homer in the fourth inning proved to be enough to stick the left-hander with a loss. Ryu has yet to allow more than two earned runs in a start since his first outing of the year on Aug. 1. His ERA sits at 2.65 with a 1.06 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB through his first seven starts (34 innings) this season. Ryu's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Rangers in his next outing.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Solid versus Rockies

Ryu did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings while striking out three in the Blue Jays' 13-9 win over the Rockies. Ryu was solid in a tough road setting in Colorado, limiting the damage to just a two-run homer by Elehuris Montero in the bottom of the third inning. The left-hander has now allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last five outings, posting a 1.50 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 24 innings in those starts. Ryu will look to keep the good times rolling in his next start, which is tentatively set to come in Oakland on Wednesday.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Wins third straight

Ryu (3-1) picked up the win Saturday, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits over five-plus innings in an 8-3 victory over the Guardians. He struck out five without walking a batter. The veteran southpaw got hit hard on occasion, serving up solo shots to Jose Ramirez and light-hitting Tyler Freeman, but the only other run on his ledger came after he exited the game in the top of the sixth and was helped along by a Matt Chapman error. Ryu's ratios have been aided by unearned runs in three straight starts, but he's won all three and has a 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 20:5 K:BB through 24 innings since making his return from Tommy John surgery. On the downside, he has yet to record an out in the sixth inning in any of his five outings. Ryu could carry some extra fantasy risk in his next start, which is likely to come next weekend in Coors Field.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Strikes out seven in second win

Ryu (2-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and one walk over five innings against the Reds. He struck out seven. Holding a 9-2 lead after five, there was no need for the Blue Jays to extend Ryu, as they continue to play it safe with the 36-year-old lefty who has looked solid in four starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. An even better sign for Ryu was the seven strikeouts he recorded in five innings after having recorded eight total in his previous 14 innings. Ryu will look to increase his workload next week in a start tentatively scheduled for Saturday at home against Cleveland.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Earns first win

Ryu (1-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out three. Ryu was able to keep his normal turn in the rotation and pitched well despite being forced from his last start after taking a comebacker off his right knee. Making just his third start of the season after returning from Tommy John surgery, Ryu allowed two unearned runs in the first inning, then allowed only one more hit over his next four frames as the Jays staked him to a six-run lead and were not forced to extend him beyond five innings. Ryu's next scheduled start is lined up for next weekend's series in Cincinnati.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: In line to start Sunday

Ryu (knee) is listed as the Blue Jays' scheduled starter Sunday versus the Cubs, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. Ryu was forced from his previous outing Monday in Cleveland after being struck on the right knee by a comebacker. X-rays came back clean, however, and he is on track to take the ball for his next turn, provided he gets through a bullpen session Friday with no issues. The left-hander had tossed four scoreless innings against the Guardians before his exit.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: X-rays clean on knee

X-rays taken Tuesday on Ryu's right knee turned up negative for any structural damage, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Ryu was removed from his start Monday against the Guardians after taking a comebacker off his knee, but it's looking like he will be able to take his next turn in the Blue Jays' rotation Sunday versus the Cubs. The veteran left-hander has posted a 4.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB in nine innings (two starts) since returning Aug. 1 from Tommy John surgery.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Diagnosed with knee contusion

Ryu left Monday's start against the Guardians with a bruised right knee. While this appears to be an early diagnosis, it's good news for the Blue Jays after the southpaw was drilled by a comebacker during Monday's contest. It's still too early to know if Ryu will be cleared to make his next start.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Exits start with injury

Ryu exited Monday's start against Cleveland after being struck on his right knee by a comebacker, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. He allowed one walk and struck out two across four scoreless innings prior to being removed. Ryu ultimately recovered to record the out at first base after being hit by a batted ball, but he went down in pain immediately after the play. The severity of the injury is not yet known, and he's undoubtedly headed to the clubhouse for additional testing.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Falls to O's in season debut

Ryu (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk over five-plus innings as the Blue Jays were routed 13-3 by the Orioles. He struck out three. Making his 2023 debut after completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery, Ryu lasted 80 pitches (54 strikes) but wasn't fooling too many batters -- he managed only eight swinging strikes and got hit hard, with Gunnar Henderson's solo shot to lead off the sixth inning chasing him from the game. The veteran southpaw will round out a six-man rotation for Toronto over the next couple weeks, but someone will likely get shifted to the bullpen once the team's schedule eases up. Ryu's next start is likely to come early next week in Cleveland.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Reinstated for Tuesday's start

Ryu (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start against the Orioles on Tuesday. The left-hander will make his season debut Tuesday against Baltimore after completing his rehab and recovery from Tommy John surgery. Ryu threw 85 pitches over six innings during his final minor-league rehab outing, but he's still likely to face some minor workload limitations in his first start back.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Getting starting nod Tuesday

Ryu (elbow) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Orioles in Toronto, Keegan Matheson reports. Ryu made his final minor-league rehab start a week ago but has since rejoined the big club and has been throwing bullpen sessions to stay fresh. As he makes his return from Tommy John surgery, Ryu is expected to be part of a temporary six-man rotation while the Blue Jays go through a long stretch with no off days. Ryu pitched well on his rehab assignment and shouldn't be on a strict pitch limit versus Baltimore.

  • Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Unlikely to return over weekend

Ryu (elbow) isn't expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list during Toronto's weekend series against the Angels, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Ryu is slated to throw a bullpen either Monday or Tuesday, but the team doesn't expect him back in the starting rotation until next week. The Blue Jays may have a better idea of when the southpaw will make his 2023 season debut following his upcoming side session.
