  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Done for 2024

Manager Mark Kotsay said Thursday that Wood (shoulder) is scheduled undergo season-ending surgery, Brent Maguire of MLB.com reports. Wood has been sidelined since mid-May with left rotator cuff tendinitis. After treating the injury with rest and rehab and receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection, Wood didn't bounce back as well as the Athletics and hoped and wasn't able to resume throwing before he opted for surgery. Wood didn't disclose the nature of Wood's surgery, but regardless of the procedure, the veteran southpaw could face an uphill battle to gain clearance for spring training. The 33-year-old -- who joined Oakland on a one-year deal in January -- will finish his 2024 campaign with a 1-3 record, 5.26 ERA and 1.78 WHIP over 39.1 innings.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Still shut down from throwing

Wood (shoulder) hasn't resumed a throwing program since receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection during the second week of June, MLB.com reports. Wood will be eligible to come off the 60-day injured list next week, but since he's not yet even playing catch again since being shut down in mid-May with left rotator cuff tendinitis, he could be more than a month away from rejoining the Oakland rotation. Prior to landing on the shelf, Wood went 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and 1.78 WHIP across 39.1 innings over his nine starts.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Moved to 60-day IL

Oakland transferred Wood (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. Wood landed on the 15-day IL in May 13 with left rotator cuff tendinitis. He had progressed in his rehab to the point of playing catch, but the 33-year-old southpaw still won't be on track to complete his throwing program until at least mid-July. Prior to the injury, Wood started in nine games, posting a 1-3 record with a 5.26 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 33:19 K:BB over 39.1 innings.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: To begin playing catch soon

Wood (shoulder) is slated to begin playing catch this weekend, MLB.com reports. The veteran southpaw hit the injured list May 15 with what was diagnosed as a rotator cuff strain, and he's been shut down from throwing since. The rest appears to be doing Wood some good if this latest news is any indication, and a decision on whether he'll eventually require a rehab assignment will likely be informed by how he progresses through his throwing program.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Goes on IL with rotator cuff injury

The Athletics placed Wood (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left rotator cuff tendinitis. The transaction is retroactive to Monday, so Wood will be eligible to come off the IL as soon as May 28. Given Wood's long track record of injuries and history as a slow healer, however, fantasy managers who have been rostering the veteran southpaw should probably prepare for him to miss more than the minimum 15 days. Wood's shoulder issue had been bothering him during his most recent start this past Sunday in Seattle, prompting the Athletics to pull him after just two innings while his fastball velocity was down about two ticks from his season-long average. The Athletics haven't named an immediate replacement in the rotation for Wood, but Kyle Muller tossed four innings in relief of the lefty last Sunday and could be stretched out enough to step into the vacant starting role this weekend in Kansas City.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Getting shoulder evaluated

Wood has been sent back to Oakland to have his left shoulder evaluated, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Wood was dealing with shoulder soreness during his start in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mariners, and the injury seems to be one that's been a problem for him for a while. A stint on the injured list would appear to be a distinct possibility for Wood, but the team is unlikely to make a decision on his status until his evaluation is completed. If Wood isn't able to take the hill for his next turn through the rotation this weekend in Kansas City, the Athletics would likely turn to Kyle Muller or Mitch Spence to start in his place.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Pulled after two innings Sunday

Wood (1-3) took the loss Sunday against the Mariners, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out a batter over two innings. Wood surrendered a first inning run off a pair of base hits and then suffered a disastrous second during which he gave up four unearned runs stemming from a fielding error by Max Schuemann to start off the frame. Sunday was by far Wood's shortest outing of the season and a disappointing one at that after he had shut down the Rangers his last time out. The 33-year-old now owns a 5.26 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 33:19 K:BB in 39.1 innings and will look to bounce back against Kansas City in his next turn through the rotation.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Iffy against Pirates

Wood didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over four innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out four. Although Wood was charged with only two runs allowed, his start shouldn't spark much optimism for fantasy managers. He walked four batters for the second time this season and surrendered a home run to Connor Joe in the first frame to mark his fifth straight start allowing a long ball. While he's yielded four or more runs three times this season, he's held opponents to two or fewer in three starts as well, leaving his overall ERA at 6.32. He's lined up to make his next start Monday against the Rangers.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Notches first win of season

Wood (1-2) earned the win over the Yankees on Thursday, allowing one run on eight hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings. Wood allowed plenty of traffic on the basepaths, but the only run that crossed the plate against him came on a second-inning Jose Trevino solo homer. This was by far the left-hander's best outing in an A's uniform -- he came into the contest holding a 7.89 ERA and 2.03 WHIP while failing to go five innings in three of his five starts. One strong start isn't going to wipe away Wood's poor overall body of work on the campaign, but it at least helped him get into the win column for the first time and provided hope that he could yet turn things around.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Knocked around again

Wood (0-2) took the loss Saturday in Cleveland, yielding four runs on eight hits and a walk over five frames. He struck out four. The five innings Wood went in this one is actually tied for his longest outing of the season. He's yielded a whopping 33 hits over 21.2 innings so far, in addition to issuing 11 walks. The Athletics no doubt were hoping Wood could put together a nice few months so they could deal him for a prospect, but he's not going to be attracting any trade interest at this rate.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Struggles continue in no-decision

Wood did not factor into the decision, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks over 4.1 innings during Sunday's 7-6 win over the Nationals. He struck out four. Wood needed 100 pitches to collect 13 outs, allowing 11 baserunners and four runs in the process. A Lane Thomas homer in the fifth left him on the hook for a three-run deficit, but the Oakland bats came to life in the sixth, providing six runs and rendering Wood with merely a no-decision. This is the fourth straight outing to start the season that Wood has failed to make it past five innings, and he now holds an 8.10 ERA and 2.10 WHIP over 16.2 innings through four starts. Those numbers are poor enough to label his hold on a spot in the starting rotation tenuous at best, even with a team like Oakland that could benefit from his veteran presence. His next start is tentatively scheduled to take place next weekend in Cleveland for a matchup with the Guardians.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Unimpressive in four innings

Wood did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out two. Wood allowed runs in the first two innings, including a Jonah Heim solo home run in the second. Wood failed to reach five frames for the second time in three starts while having to work through some command issues. He now owns an 8.03 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB in 12.1 innings but lines up for a favorable start against the Nationals his next time out.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Knocked around in Oakland debut

Wood (0-1) took the loss against Cleveland on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters over 3.1 innings. Wood got through three frames with just one run on his ledger, but he faltered in the fourth, allowing six straight batters to reach base with one out. The left-hander was pulled following Brayan Rocchio's two-run double, but by then he had given up five runs in the frame. Wood will be looked to for veteran leadership and rotation stability in his first campaign with the Athletics, though it remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank after compiling a 4.41 ERA over his previous three big-league seasons across the bay with San Francisco.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Solid in final spring start

Wood allowed an earned run on two hits, a walk and a wild pitch over three innings in a Cactus League win over the Reds on Friday. He struck out four. The veteran, who's already been tabbed for an Opening Day start against Cleveland on Thursday, tuned up well for that outing with his three-inning stint on the mound. Wood's one stumble came in the form of an RBI double surrendered to Will Benson in the third inning, and the left-hander will finish spring having allowed just two earned runs over the eight innings covering his last two starts while generating an impressive 10:1 K:BB in that span.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Tabbed for Opening Day

The Athletics announced Tuesday that Wood will start Opening Day against the Guardians on March 28, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The 33-year-old lefty worked as a swingman for the Giants last season and had a 4.33 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 74:42 K:BB over 97.2 innings, but being a veteran on a largely unproven staff makes him a logical candidate to pitch Opening Day. Wood doesn't have much fantasy upside with a 4.41 ERA across the past three seasons, especially since he hasn't topped 140 frames in any of those individual campaigns.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Another solid showing Tuesday

Wood allowed two earned runs on four hits over 4.1 innings in the Athletics' Cactus League win over the Mariners on Tuesday. He also hit two batters and recorded five strikeouts. Wood built on a decent showing in a rain-shortened outing against the Guardians on Thursday, when he allowed two runs on three hits over 2.1 innings with five strikeouts. The left-hander was able to match the latter total Tuesday while upping his workload, and although his control wasn't at its sharpest, Wood appears increasingly ready to open the regular season as the Athletics' No. 4 starter.

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Improves in second spring outing

Wood started a rain-shortened Cactus League matchup against the Guardians on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over 2.1 innings while recording five strikeouts. The game was called due to rain in the top of the third inning, but not before Wood turned in a markedly better performance than in his Cactus League debut against the Royals last Friday. The veteran southpaw had allowed three earned runs on four hits, including two homers, and a walk over two innings in that start. However, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports that Wood felt much more in command while needing just 23 pitches to record his first six outs Thursday. "I was just trying to pump the zone," Wood said. "I've been working on a few things I've been trying to get reps with. I felt good. I felt like I commanded it pretty solidly today. I'm just going to keep building up and getting ready to go."

  • Athletics' Alex Wood: Agrees to deal with Athletics

Wood agreed to terms on a contract with the Athletics on Saturday, Robert Murray reports. The particulars of the deal aren't known yet, and it is pending a physical. Wood made 12 starts and 17 relief appearances last season with the Giants, holding a 4.33 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 74:42 K:BB over 97.2 innings. The 33-year-old left-hander will slide into Oakland's rotation and the club will hope he can have a nice first half so it can trade him to a contender at the deadline.

  • Giants' Alex Wood: Covers five innings

Wood allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings during Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. He did not factor into the decision. Alex Cobb lasted two innings before his hip injury flared up again. Wood was able to provide bulk innings in relief, throwing 47 of 82 pitches for strikes. With the Giants fading in the National League playoff race, Cobb's injury comes at a bad time for the team. Wood may be a candidate to fill the gap in the rotation, either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever -- he's functioned in the latter role often this year. Wood has a 4.60 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 68:39 K:BB through 92 innings over 27 appearances (12 starts) this season. Cobb's spot in the rotation would come up Sunday against the Dodgers, but the Giants' pitching plans are likely to be up in the air until more information on the injury is available.

  • Giants' Alex Wood: Struggles in loss

Wood (5-5) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk over 2.1 innings against the Cubs while striking out two. Wood got off to a rough start, allowing four of the first six batters to reach base in the first inning, which led to three runs coming across for Chicago. He got tagged again in the third for another two runs, marking the third time this season in which he's allowed at least five runs. The lefty had not given up an earned run in five straight appearances coming in, which covered a span of 9.1 innings. Wednesday's start was Wood's first since July 21, and he hasn't covered more than four frames in an outing since July 8, so he doesn't offer much fantasy upside even if he sticks in a starting role.
