Jose Berrios had us worried for awhile, but he ended up with a rather valuable fantasy season considering his surrounding circumstances. Berrios won 50 percent of his starts, which is outstanding considering he played for a last-place team that won 74 games all season. He began the season with a phenomenal April in which he won four of his first seven starts, never allowing more than two earned runs in any of them. He then came back to earth, allowing eight earned runs in his eighth start and then closing the first half by allowing 11 home runs over his final eight outings prior to the All-Star break. Berrios sliced more than a full run off his 4.01 first half ERA by stepping up his strikeout rate nearly five full percentage points and ceased hitting batters as 12 of the 13 batters he hit in 2024 came before the break. The 30-plus homers on the season predestined him to a higher ERA, as only Robbie Ray has pitched to an ERA below 3.50 despite allowing 30 or more homers in recent seasons. Berrios is no longer the strikeout guy he was in his earlier years, but he is fifth in innings worked since 2021, trailing only Nola, Webb, Wheeler and Burnes. We would be asking a lot of Berrios to go out and win another 50 percent of his starts for a team that is likely going to be a non-contender once again, but he hasn't missed a start in eons, and you just cannot buy that type of volume these days. If you take some pitching upside risks early in the draft, Berrios is an excellent volume play to help offset the earlier risks.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Hit hard for six runs in loss

Berrios (0-1) took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings during Thursday's game against Baltimore. He struck out five. The Orioles knocked around Berrios, who served up a solo homer to Adley Rutschman in the first inning, a three-run shot to Tyler O'Neill in the third frame and another solo shot to Cedric Mullins in the fourth. Berrios was sharp while logging a 2.18 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 18 strikeouts across 20.2 innings in the Grapefruit League, and the veteran right-hander will look to get back on track in what appears to be a softer matchup in his next scheduled start Tuesday at home against the Nationals.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Sharp in final tune-up

Berrios gave up one run on four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He struck out five. A Kyle Schwarber solo shot in the fifth inning was the only real blemish on the right-hander's line. Berrios built up to 84 pitches (53 strikes), and he wraps up his spring with a 2.18 ERA and 18:5 K:BB over 20.2 innings. His next trip to the mound will come Opening Day against the Orioles.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Receives Opening Day nod

Manager John Schneider announced Monday that Berrios will start the Blue Jays' March 27 season opener versus the Orioles in Toronto, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Though Max Scherzer (thumb) and Kevin Gausman also represented worthy candidates for the Opening Day nod, both have been eased along more slowly in spring training, which may have factored into Schneider's decision to go with Berrios in the first game of the season. Berrios has already made four Grapefruit League starts and struck out seven over six scoreless innings in his most recent outing Sunday versus Atlanta, so he should be able to give the Blue Jays plenty of length right away to begin the season. Berrios is coming off a 2024 campaign in which he submitted a 3.60 ERA and 1.15 WHIP -- his best marks since 2021 -- but his strikeout rate dropped to 19.5 percent, his lowest of any season in which he made at least 15 starts.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Makes third spring start

Berrios allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one over four innings during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. The veteran right-hander allowed just one run across his first two appearances of the spring, but Brandon Lowe tagged him for a three-run homer during the third inning Sunday. After posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 153:54 K:BB across 192.1 innings last season. Berrios is locked in as a mid-rotation starter for Toronto, though his career-worst 7.2 K/9 in 2024 will limit his fantasy upside if repeated.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Knocked around by Marlins

Berrios (16-11) allowed six runs on six hits and three walks over three innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Miami. Berrios never found his footing and was chased early. He coughed up three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. His wild pitch in the third inning allowed a sixth run to score before he left the contest. Berrios had allowed two or fewer earned runs in eight straight starts before Friday's hiccup. Despite the poor outing, he posted a strong 2.95 ERA in 12 starts after the All-Star break. Overall, he finished his 2024 campaign with a 3.60 ERA and a 153:54 K:BB through 192.1 innings.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Stuck with hard-luck loss

Berrios (16-10) took the loss Friday against Tampa Bay, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six. Berrios was excellent Friday, blanking the Rays through five innings before ultimately surrendering a lone run on a Jonathan Aranda solo shot in the sixth. However, that one swing proved enough to stick Berrios with the loss in an eventual 1-0 defeat. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the right-hander, though he's now held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last eight outings, posting a 1.51 ERA in that span. Berrios will carry a 3.38 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 149:51 K:BB into his final start of the year, likely to come at home next week against the Red Sox.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Sharp in seventh straight win

Berrios (16-9) picked up the win Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over seven innings in a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals. He struck out four. The right-hander needed 97 pitches (62 strikes) to produce his 20th quality start of the season, leaving him one short of the career high he recorded with the Twins in 2019. Berrios has given up two earned runs or fewer in seven straight outings, winning all seven while ringing up a 1.51 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 40:8 K:BB over 47.2 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Tampa Bay.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Another strong outing in 15th win

Berrios (15-9) picked up the win over Atlanta on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over six innings while striking out five. Berrios was efficient throughout his time on the mound, allowing just two hits and a walk through the first four innings before surrendering an RBI single to Michael Harris in the bottom of the fifth. That would be the only run he'd allow in the contest while going on to log his sixth consecutive quality start. The right-hander has also won each of his last six starts, posting a 36:6 K:BB over that stretch. His 15 wins on the campaign have him tied for third in the majors with Seth Lugo.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Dominant despite illness

Berrios (14-9) earned the win over Minnesota on Saturday, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five batters over six scoreless innings. The Blue Jays gave Berrios a seven-run lead after half an inning, and the right-hander capitalized by cruising through his outing. He needed only 63 pitches to complete six frames and would have probably gone longer under normal circumstances, but the right-hander mentioned after the game that he was dealing with a fever and said that taking the mound "was a challenge," per the Associated Press. Given his ability to pitch through the illness Saturday, there doesn't seem to be any concern about the issue affecting Berrios' next start. He'll look to extend a five-game quality-start streak in what lines up to be a matchup in Atlanta next weekend.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Throws 7.2 innings in win

Berrios (13-9) allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 7.2 innings Monday, striking out six and earning a win over the Red Sox. Berrios gave up just one unearned run through seven frames before Jarren Duran belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning. It was Berrios' fourth straight win and his longest start of the season. During this four-game stretch, he's produced a 1.88 ERA with a 26:4 K:BB through 28.2 frames. However, in the 10 starts prior to this win streak, he posted a 6.02 ERA. For the year, Berrios owns a 3.72 ERA across 27 starts. His next outing is projected to be in Minnesota this weekend.

Overall, the right-hander sports a 3.79 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP and 123:46 K:BB across 156.2 innings this year. Berrios is currently lined up to face the Angels at home this weekend in his next start.

Berrios allowed just one hit over the first four innings before coughing up a solo homer to Matt Thaiss in the bottom of the fifth, though Toronto had already backed the right-hander with six runs in support by that point. Berrios has now hurled seven innings of one-run ball in each of his last two starts, posting a 13:2 K:BB over that stretch. He'a also recorded at least five strikeouts in five consecutive outings and has won three of his last four decisions (spanning four starts).

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Strikes out eight in win

Berrios (10-9) earned the win against the Athletics on Friday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over seven innings. Berrios allowed a solo home run in the third inning but was otherwise fantastic, limiting hard contact and generating 12 swinging strikes on 103 pitches. He has been inconsistent since the All-Star break, posting two seven-inning victories but also yielding eight earned runs across 9.2 frames in his other two outings. On the season, the 30-year-old owns a 3.97 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 111:43 K:BB across 142.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Angels next week.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Allows three homers in loss

Berrios (9-9) took the loss against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts over five innings. The velocity on each of Berrios' offerings was at least one mph above his season averages, but he was burned by three two-run homers. The 30-year-old trails only Kutter Crawford with 25 long balls allowed this season, and he has yielded four earned runs or more in six of his past 10 starts. On the year, Berrios owns a 4.11 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 103:42 K:BB across 135.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Athletics next week.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Earns win with seven strong innings

Berrios (9-8) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on six hits over seven innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out five. Berrios managed to keep the Rangers off the board aside from an RBI single by Nathaniel Lowe in the sixth. It was just the second time since the end of May that Berrios completed seven frames, and it was the first time during that span that the veteran righty allowed as few as one run. He had particularly struggled over his last eight starts prior to Sunday, carrying a 6.44 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with a 3.7 BB/9 over 43.1 innings during that stretch. Additionally, Berrios managed to not walk a batter after delivering 10 free passes in 8.2 innings over his past two starts. Berrios will look to build upon this effort, though it won't get any easier in his next start as he's currently scheduled to take on the Yankees in the Bronx.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Can't find plate against Rays

Berrios (8-8) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on three hits and six walks over 4.2 innings as the Blue Jays fell 4-2 to the Rays. He struck out five. The six free passes were a season worst for Berrios, topping the four he'd issued in his last start July 13. The right-hander also served up a solo shot to Brandon Lowe, and in his last nine outings dating back to the beginning of June, he's been taken deep 12 times while stumbling to a 6.02 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 34:21 K:BB through 49.1 innings. Berrios will try to get back on track in his next start, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Rangers.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Fans 10 in no-decision

Berrios didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Seattle, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out 10. Berrios had issues keeping the ball in the park Sunday, with a Victor Robles solo homer and a three-run home run by Mitch Garver accounting for the Mariners four runs on the day. Berrios' struggles with the long ball aren't particularly new, as the 30-year-old has surrendered a round tripper in seven consecutive starts and has yielded multiple homers five times this season. However, there was a silver lining for Sunday's start, with Berrios setting a season high in strikeouts. He's on track to face the Diamondbacks in Arizona next weekend.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Falls apart late

Berrios (8-6) picked up the win Tuesday against Houston, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout across five innings. He also hit a batter. Berrios kept the Astros off the scoreboard until the fifth inning, where he unwound and allowed three singles, a hit-by-pitch and a three-run home run. Still, Berrios was able to snare a second straight win as the Blue Jays had compiled seven runs prior to the fifth. The 30-year-old has been shaky as of late, owning a 5.97 ERA with 17 strikeouts and eight home runs allowed over his last five starts. He's scheduled to face the Mariners on Sunday.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Bounces back with victory

Berrios (7-6) earned the win against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over seven innings. Berrios had been struggling coming into Thursday, allowing nine runs over 11 frames across his past two starts. He rebounded nicely against New York, giving up just two runs on a fifth-inning homer by Trent Grisham. The right-handed hurler also registered a season-high eight strikeouts en route to his 12th quality start. Berrios has posted a mediocre 6.6 K/9 on the campaign but is nonetheless in the midst of a fine season with a 3.38 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 104 innings.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Hit hard Saturday

Berrios (6-6) allowed five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Guardians. The Guardians aren't known for power, but they tagged Berrios with three home runs -- Bo Naylor, Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan all took the right-hander deep. With seven homers allowed over his last four starts, Berrios' trouble with the long ball is becoming a concern. He's given up 14 runs across 22.2 innings in that span and now has a 3.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB through 97 innings across 16 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home in a difficult matchup versus the Yankees.
