  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Mets transferred Holmes (fibula) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Tuesday. The right-hander was recently shut down from all activities for 6-to-8 weeks due to a fractured right fibula, so it's hardly a surprise he's been moved to the 60-day IL. Holmes is expected to require about a month to build back up to game readiness once fully recovered, so he'll likely be sidelined until at least mid-August.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Shut down 6-to-8 weeks

Holmes (fibula) will be shut down from all activity for 6-to-8 weeks before beginning a rehab program, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. Holmes won't need to undergo surgery to address his fractured right fibula, and the Mets are optimistic that the 33-year-old will make it back to a big-league mound before the end of the season. However, manager Carlos Mendoza said that Holmes will need to go through a spring-training-like buildup once he's cleared to resume activity, which will add another month or so to his timeline. All in all, it seems like the right-hander could be sidelined until late August.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Officially placed on IL

The Mets placed Holmes (fibula) on the 15-day injured list Saturday. Holmes suffered a fractured fibula during Friday's game after getting hit on the leg by a comebacker. Manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game that the right-hander's injury will keep him out for "a long time," but he won't need to undergo surgery to address the issue and isn't expected to miss the rest of the season, per Laura Albanese of Newsday. No replacement has been named to take over Holmes' spot in the rotation just yet, but Joey Gerber will come up from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move to add depth to New York's bullpen.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Suffers fracture in leg

Holmes was diagnosed with a fractured fibula following his removal from Friday's game against the Yankees, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. Holmes suffered the injury after getting hit on the right leg by a 111-mph line drive off the bat of Spencer Jones in the fourth inning. Holmes remained in the game for a short while afterward before exiting midway through the fifth, finishing with four earned runs allowed on seven hits and two walks while logging eight strikeouts in 4.1 frames. The Mets haven't yet offered a timetable for the 33-year-old's return, but manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game that Holmes will be out for "a long time," so a move to the 60-day IL is possible.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Nabs fourth win

Holmes (4-2) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over 6.2 innings against the Angels. He struck out six. Holmes' strong 2026 campaign continued Sunday, as the right-hander kept the Angels' bats quiet en route to his fourth win of the season. In what has been a rocky start to the year for the Mets, the 33-year-old has been a pillar of consistency, tossing five-plus innings in all seven starts to date without allowing more than two earned runs in any of them. Across 42.2 innings, Holmes owns a 1.69 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with a 31:14 K:BB and is tentatively scheduled to start Saturday against the Diamondbacks.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Six shutout innings for third win

Holmes (3-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Nationals, allowing three hits and one walk with six strikeouts across six shutout innings. Holmes doesn't have the best stuff, but he also doesn't throw anything straight and kept the Washington lineup off balance all night, racking up a season-high six strikeouts despite generating just eight whiffs on 94 total pitches. The right-hander has yet to allow more than two runs in any of his six starts and was particularly sharp in April, surrendering five earned runs over 30.1 innings. Holmes now sports a 1.75 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB across 36 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start Sunday on the road against the Angels.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Goes seven frames in no-decision

Holmes didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Twins after allowing two runs on five hits and a walk across seven innings. He struck out three. Holmes didn't look dominant by any means, as he tossed just 56 of his 88 pitches for strikes and only struck out three, but he got the job done en route to posting his second quality start of the campaign. Holmes has done a good job of limiting the damage every time he's on the mound, as he's allowed two or fewer earned runs while pitching at least five frames in each of his five starts in 2026. That translates to a strong 2.10 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP, although his 5.7 K/9 is below average. Holmes is in line to make his next start at home against the Nationals next week.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Cleared for next start

Holmes (hamstring) threw a bullpen Monday without issue and will make his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Dodgers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Holmes passed the training staff's strength tests with flying colors Saturday, and after firing a successful bullpen Monday, the Mets have officially cleared him to toe the rubber Wednesday. He's off to a strong start to the 2026 campaign, posting a 1.50 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 18.0 innings (three starts).

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Expected to make next start

Manager Carlos Mendoza said Saturday that Holmes' hamstring "checked all the boxes" during a series of strength tests, David Lennon of Newsday reports. The next step for Holmes is to throw a bullpen session within the next few days. If he gets through it without any issues, he'll receive the green light to make his next start against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Exits start with trainer

Holmes was removed from his start Friday against the Athletics with left hamstring tightness, Max Goodman of NJ.com reports. Holmes had been pitching well Friday, allowing just one earned run on five hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 5.1 innings, but the Mets' trainers saw something they didn't like and made the call to pull the 33-year-old. More details on his injury will likely come after the team takes a closer look at him.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Limits Cardinals during win

Holmes (1-0) earned the win against the Cardinals on Monday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings. Holmes surrendered an early run in the first inning but settled in from there, shutting down St. Louis over the next four frames. The right-hander was one out away from a quality start before Nolan Gorman tagged him for a solo homer in the sixth, immediately ending his outing. Following this strong start to the season, the 33-year-old is lined up to face San Francisco in his next start, a favorable matchup given the Giants' offensive struggles so far in 2026.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Fans six in return from WBC

Holmes gave up one run on two hits over five innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out six without walking a batter. Seeing his first action for the Mets this spring since returning from a stint in the WBC with Team USA, Holmes entered the game in the fifth inning and went the rest of the way, tossing 44 of 62 pitches for strikes. The veteran righty has looked good in the Grapefruit League, posting a 2.84 ERA and 13:3 K:BB over 12.2 innings, but it's not quite clear where Holmes fits in New York's starting picture unless the team commits to using a six-man rotation. Kodai Senga appears to be healthy and back in peak form, while David Peterson has done nothing this spring to lose his spot.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Already stretched out for WBC

Holmes gave up two runs on one hit and two walks over 3.2 innings in the Mets' Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays on Monday. He struck out three. The right-hander threw 57 pitches (30 strikes) as he prepares to represent Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Holmes' one real mistake came on an 82.2 mph curveball to Kazuma Okamoto, which the Japanese slugger put over the fence in center field for a two-run home run. It's a pitch Holmes didn't throw at all in 2025. Once he returns to camp from the WBC, Holmes will be battling with Kodai Senga for the fifth spot in the Mets' Opening Day rotation, although with only two days off through the first three weeks of their schedule, it's possible the team will roll with a six-man rotation out of the gate.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Silences Marlins in 12th win

Holmes (12-8) earned the win Saturday against the Marlins, allowing one hit and three walks in six scoreless innings. He struck out two. With the Mets' backs against the wall in a heated wild-card race, Holmes came through with one of his best performances of the season. It was the first time all year that the right-hander fired at least six shutout innings, and he induced 11 groundouts on just 78 pitches. New York had to manage Holmes' workload down the stretch of his first full campaign as a starter, but it's still been a successful transition overall. He'll close the regular season with a 3.53 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 129:66 K:BB over a career-high 165.2 frames.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Drawing start Saturday

Holmes will start Saturday's game against the Marlins, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. Holmes has been working in tandem with Sean Manaea throughout September, but both threw one inning of relief Wednesday, meaning Saturday's contest could be more of a total bullpen game. Holmes had pitched between 3.2 and 4.2 innings in his other four appearances in September.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Tosses four innings

Holmes did not factor in the decision during Tuesday's win against San Diego. He allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two over four innings. Holmes was relieved by Sean Manaea in the fifth inning in what was a scheduled move by the Mets to benefit both veteran arms. The only two runs against Holmes came via solo homers by Jackson Merrill and Jake Cronenworth in the second and third innings. Holmes threw a season-low 53 pitches Tuesday, as he continues to show signs of fatigue in his first year as a full-time MLB starter. He posted a 2.99 ERA through his first 17 starts but has since produced a 4.96 ERA over his last 13 outings. That's resulted in a 3.77 season ERA with a 124:63 K:BB over 155 innings. Holmes is currently slated for a home matchup with Washington this weekend.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Set to be piggybacked Tuesday

Holmes is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Padres at Citi Field but will be piggybacked by Sean Manaea, MLB.com reports. "I think it depends what kind of lineup we get and where we're at in the game," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, when asked how extensively Holmes and Manaea will be used Tuesday. "That's the plan, but we've got to be able to make adjustments and be flexible. We've just got to see what we've got there." Manaea's transition to the bullpen comes after he posted a 7.71 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in spite of an excellent 42:6 K:BB in 32.2 innings over his seven starts dating back to the beginning of August, and the Mets are hoping that the role change will help the southpaw generate better results. The arrangement could also prove beneficial for Holmes, who owns a 4.81 ERA and 1.46 WHIP since the beginning of August and may be wearing down during his first season in the big leagues as a full-time starter. Though the pairing of Holmes and Manaea could enhance the ratios of both pitchers while they take on lighter workloads than they would as traditional starters, Holmes may struggle to reach the five innings he would need to hit to qualify for a win. The Mets will likely reassess their rotation plans following Tuesday's game, but if the Holmes/Manaea tandem fares well, the two could be deployed in a piggyback setup once again Sunday versus the Nationals.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Labors in no-decision

Holmes took a no-decision Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing five runs on six hits and five walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out four. It was a laborious outing for Holmes, who fell one walk shy of matching his season high and couldn't get through four innings despite throwing 85 pitches. The five runs allowed also established a season worst, and the former reliever is showing signs of fatigue late in his first full campaign as a starter. Holmes is now up to a career-high 126 innings, which is nearly double his previous career high, and he has a 5.45 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 26:17 K:BB across 38 frames since the start of July. He's tentatively scheduled to take the ball this weekend versus the Mariners.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Bounces back for ninth win

Holmes (9-5) allowed a run on six hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings to earn the win over the Giants on Friday. Holmes was good enough, though he was far from dominant or efficient, needing 104 pitches (64 strikes) to get through five frames. The right-hander is reportedly not being considered for a move back to the bullpen, so the Mets appear to have faith in him to continue holding down a rotation spot despite a rough July. Friday's outing was his first win in five starts this month, and he's allowed 15 runs (14 earned) over 25.2 innings in that span. The 32-year-old is at a 3.40 ERA despite a 1.28 WHIP and 88:44 K:BB through 113.2 innings across 21 starts. He is tentatively projected for a road start in San Diego next week.

  • Mets' Clay Holmes: Tough stretch continues

Holmes (8-5) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings as the Mets fell 5-2 to the Reds. He struck out three. The right-hander got staked to an early 2-0 lead, but Holmes couldn't make it hold up as he had trouble putting away hitters when he needed to. The converted reliever may be wearing down -- Holmes has been tagged for five runs in two of his last three starts and hasn't struck out more than five batters in any of his last seven, stumbling to a 4.59 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 21:20 K:BB through 35.1 innings over the latter stretch. Holmes will try to right the ship in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in San Francisco.
