Yankees' Aaron Judge: NY remains optimistic about return

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday that the team is "still very optimistic" that Judge (ribs) will return this season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Cashman explained that "there's a very high likelihood" Judge will be able to recover from the fracture in his right ribs in time to play again this season but acknowledged that "there's challenges with all that too." Naturally, Judge's return could be impacted by New York's place in the standings, and the team currently sits 3.5 games out of first place in the AL East but a comfortable six games up for a wild-card spot. Judge hasn't played since May 31, and he's yet to resume baseball activities, so despite Cashman's optimism, the slugger doesn't appear anywhere close to rejoining the big-league club.
The Yankees haven't yet determined when Judge (ribs) will next be examined by team doctors, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
It's coming up on two months since Judge last played in a game, and the star slugger remains unable to participate in baseball activities. Manager Aaron Boone said July 25 that Judge is still in "letting-it-heal mode," and with no clear timeline for when he'll undergo imaging again, Judge's potential return date is very hazy. He'll almost certainly need to take part in a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated, but such a stint doesn't seem to be on the horizon.
The Yankees transferred Judge (ribs) to the 60-day injured list Saturday.
With Judge still not quite fully healed yet, the Yankees decided to transfer their captain to the 60-day IL. This move is retroactive to when the 34-year-old was originally placed on the 10-day IL on June 4, yet it will still likely be at least a couple more weeks until Judge is ready to go at the big-league level. Jasson Dominguez will continue to see extended playing time in right field in Judge's absence.

Manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that a specialist determined that Judge (ribs) is not yet ready to resume baseball activities, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
Judge is reportedly feeling significantly less pain now that he's more than a month removed from suffering a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side, but he hasn't shown enough signs of healing to be cleared to ramp up just yet. A timeline for his return will remain foggy until he gets the green light to resume activity, though it's likely safe to assume he'll spend at least a few more weeks on the injured list.

Judge (ribs) said Friday that his latest MRI this week showed "some" healing, but he's not yet 100 percent, and one more doctor will review the imaging before determining the next steps, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
It still sounds like Judge is multiple weeks away from a potential return to the lineup. The slugger hasn't played since May 31 due to a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side. Jasson Dominguez will continue to see regular playing time in right field for the Yankees while Judge continues his recovery. Judge will undergo at least one more MRI before he's cleared to resume baseball activities, and manager Aaron Boone reiterated Friday that he still expects the right fielder to play again this season, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
