Luis Severino settled for a one-year, "pillow" contract from the Mets last offseason and went on to make 30-plus starts for the first time since 2018. The right-hander incorporated a sinker as one of his primary pitches for the first time in his career and also mostly ditched his slider in favor of a sweeper. The pitch mix change resulted in just a 21.2 percent strikeout rate, although in his final 13 starts between the regular season and playoffs he upped that rate to 24.8 percent. If Severino is now more willing to sacrifice swings and misses for contact earlier in counts, it could make him more of a floor than a ceiling play. He'll experience contextual downgrades across the board after signing a three-year deal with the Athletics, which also works to cap his ceiling in the wins department.

  • Athletics' Luis Severino: Fires six shutout innings

Severino didn't factor in the decision Thursday against Seattle after striking out six and allowing three hits and four walks over six scoreless innings. The right-hander was a bit wild at times with four free passes and a hit-by-pitch, but he kept the Mariners off the board by scattering the baserunners and not giving up any extra-base hits. Severino missed out on the victory when the A's bullpen was unable to maintain a 1-0 lead, but it was still a strong debut with the team after inking a two-year, $45 million contract in December. He lines up to pitch against the Cubs next week.

  • Athletics' Luis Severino: Six scoreless innings in A's debut

Severino did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three hits and four walks over six scoreless innings against Seattle. He struck out six. Severino gave a strong performance in his A's debut as his bullpen blew a late lead to cost him the victory. He picked up where he left off with the Mets in 2024 with a bounce-back season, during which he had 3.91 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 31 regular-season starts last year.

  • Athletics' Luis Severino: Draws Opening Day start

The Athletics announced Monday that Severino will start their March 27 season opener versus the Mariners in Seattle, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Severino became the obvious choice to take the hill for the Athletics on Opening Day the moment he signed a three-year, $67 million contract in December, the largest guaranteed deal in franchise history. After injuries limited him to fewer than 20 starts in each of his final five seasons with the Yankees from 2019 through 2023, Severino proved to be durable in his lone campaign with the Mets in 2024, turning in a 3.91 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 31 starts. The Athletics are banking on the 31-year-old Severino avoiding the pitfalls on the health front that plagued him throughout his twenties and emerging as a capable innings eater at the front of the rotation in 2025.

  • Athletics' Luis Severino: Touched up in second spring start

Severino surrendered two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over three innings during Monday's Cactus League loss to the White Sox. Severino had a tough time settling in and allowed both runs in the top of the first inning, but he looked sharp in his final two frames of work. This is simply part of the spring training process for the 31-year-old, who inked a three-year, $67 million contract with the Athletics in December to lead the club's starting rotation.

  • Athletics' Luis Severino: To Athletics on $67 million deal

The Athletics agreed to a three-year, $67 million contract with Severino on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the deal includes an opt out after the second year. It's an unexpected landing spot for Severino, to say the least, as the $67 million guarantee is the largest in Athletics history. Severino held a 3.91 ERA and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings across 31 regular-season starts for the Mets in 2024. The A's will play the 2025-27 seasons in Sacramento before moving to their permanent home in Las Vegas in 2028.

  • Luis Severino: Rejecting qualifying offer

Severino has rejected the Mets' one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Severino might not be able to match the $21.05 average annual value of the qualifying offer on a multi-year contract, but he should still do pretty well in free agency. The Mets are interested in bringing the right-hander back, but if they're unable to they will net a draft pick when Severino signs elsewhere. Severino, who turns 31 in February, held a 3.91 ERA and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings across 31 regular-season starts for the Mets in 2024.

  • Luis Severino: Unlikely to accept qualifying offer

Will Sammon of The Athletic relays that Severino is unlikely to accept the Mets' $21.05 million qualifying offer. The deadline for players to make a decision on a qualifying offer is Tuesday, but it appears Severino is set to decline the Mets' offer in favor of attempting to land a multi-year offer. The 30-year-old right-hander signed a one-year, $13 million with the Mets in November of 2023 and had a quality 2024 campaign, going 11-7 across 31 starts with a 3.91 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings. It's certainly a risk for Severino, given the fact that he pitched just 209.1 innings from 2019 to 2023 due to various injuries.

  • Luis Severino: Given qualifying offer

The Mets extended a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer to Severino on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Severino held a 3.91 ERA and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings across 31 regular-season starts for the Mets in 2024. If he rejects the qualifying offer and signs a multi-year deal elsewhere, the Mets will receive a draft pick as compensation.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: In line for Game 3 start

Severino will start Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLCS against the Dodgers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Severino will not be with the Mets in Los Angeles for Game 2, as he's already headed back to New York in advance of his Game 3 start so that he can get plenty of rest. The right-hander has posted quality starts in each of his two postseason outings so far, allowing a combined seven runs (six earned) with a 10:2 K:BB over 12 innings. He'll be opposed by Walker Buehler in Game 3.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Taking ball in Game 2

Severino will start Sunday in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Phillies, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. The Mets are going with Kodai Senga (calf/triceps) to start what's likely to be a bullpen game in Game 1 before turning to Severino on normal rest in Game 2. Severino tossed six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) in his wild-card series outing versus the Brewers. He'll be opposed by Cristopher Sanchez.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Starting Game 1 vs. Milwaukee

Severino will start Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Brewers on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Severino was held out of Monday's twin bill against Atlanta, so he'll be fresh for the beginning of the wild-card round. He accrued a 3.64 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in his last five appearances of the regular season, and the Mets would surely appreciate some length out of Severino on Tuesday after some of the club's high-leverage relief arms were forced into action Monday to secure a place in the postseason.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Held back for wild-card series

Severino's next start will come during the wild-card series after the Mets called up Joey Lucchesi to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader in Atlanta, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Severino would have started the second game had the Mets lost the first contest. However, since they won, they can afford to hold Severino back for the wild-card round, likely for a Game 1 start. Severino made 31 regular-season starts for the Mets, posting a 3.91 ERA and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: On tap for nightcap of twin bill

Severino will start the second game of Monday's doubleheader versus Atlanta, if necessary, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Severino will be set to pitch in the nightcap Monday if New York drops the opener. The Mets need to win one of the two contests in order to secure a spot in the Wild Card Round. Tylor Megill will start the matinee, and if New York wins, Severino will shift his focus to getting ready for the postseason.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Tagged with seventh loss

Severino (11-7) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings as the Mets fell 5-1 to Atlanta. He struck out five. The right-hander picked a bad time to have his worst start of September, and his shortest outing since July 31. Severino needed 89 pitches (61 strikes) to record 12 outs, and he saw his quality start streak end at four. He's been one the Mets' most reliable arms during their playoff push, posting a 3.17 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB over his last eight trips to the mound, and Severino could be pitching with a wild-card spot on the line in his final start of the regular season, which lines up to come Sunday in Milwaukee.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Fans seven in 11th win

Severino (11-6) picked up the win over the Phillies on Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings while striking out seven. Severino got off to a hot start, striking out five of the first eight batters he faced in the contest before allowing two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth. The right-hander generated 13 whiffs in the contest en route to posting at least seven strikeouts for the fifth time in his last eight outings. It marked Severino's fourth consecutive quality start, while he's also secured wins in each of his last four decisions (spanning seven starts).

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Logs quality start in no-decision

Severino did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Phillies, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings. Severino was mostly in control but surrendered two home runs to Bryce Harper before departing with a 4-3 lead. The 30-year-old generated 11 whiffs on 86 pitches and has tossed three consecutive quality starts to open September. On the season, he owns a 3.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 149:57 K:BB across 172 innings and lines up for a rematch with the Phillies next week.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Fans nine in no-decision

Severino did not factor into the decision in a loss to Arizona on Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out nine. Severino struck out four of the first seven batters he faced before allowing Arizona's first run of the contest on an RBI single from Luis Guillorme. The right-hander was then victimized by the long ball in both the third and fourth innings and would later be relieved by Huascar Brazoban with two outs in the fifth, marking Severino's shortest outing this month. The 30-year-old veteran has now surrendered at least four runs in four of his last six starts, coughing up multiple homers in three of those outings. He'll finish the month of August with a 4.08 ERA and a 35:8 K:BB in five starts, going 2-2 over that stretch.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Wins second straight

Severino (9-6) picked up the win over the Padres on Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and four walks over five innings while striking out five. Severino did a good job of pitching his way out of trouble through the first four innings despite surrendering five singles and a walk over that stretch. The Padres would finally get to him in the fifth, however, when the right-hander allowed the first three batters to reach, eventually leading to San Diego's first run coming home on a double play. Severino has allowed one run or fewer in back-to-back starts after previously giving up at least four runs in three straight. However, he also matched his second-highest walk total of the campaign in Thursday's win, and he's issued multiple free passes in seven of his last nine outings.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Fires second career shutout

Severino (8-6) picked up the win Saturday, scattering four hits and a walk over nine scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the Marlins. He struck out eight. Three of the four hits off Severino were doubles, but he bore down and stranded the runner each time. The right-hander needed a season-high 113 pitches (78 strikes) to record his second career shutout, with the other coming back in 2018. It was an impressive turnaround for Severino, who had gone 0-3 with an 8.00 ERA and 1.83 WHIP over his prior four starts. The 30-year-old is scheduled to make his next trip to the mound on the road next week in San Diego.

  • Mets' Luis Severino: Handed third straight loss

Severino (7-6) took the loss Sunday against the Mariners, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings. Severino had allowed just one run through four innings, which came on a solo home run by Jorge Polanco. He was one out away from getting through the fifth unscathed, but Randy Arozarena extended the inning with an RBI infield single before Cal Raleigh opened things up with a two-run homer. On a positive note, Severino racked up eight strikeouts, his most since he had 10 back on June 23 but he's now given up five homers and 14 runs over his last three starts (15 innings). The 30-year-old now owns a 4.17 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 109:46 K:BB in 133.2 innings. He'll look for some better results when he takes the mound in a weekend series against the Marlins his next time out.
