Grant Holmes reached the majors for the first time last season after spending a decade in the minor leagues, and he was more than just a feel-good story for Atlanta. The right-hander proved plenty capable between starting and relief work, posting a 3.56 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 70:15 K:BB over 68.1 total innings. His breaking pitches in particular were excellent swing-and-miss offerings for him. Holmes' career Triple-A walk rate of 4.1 per nine is more than double his mark from his debut season in the majors, so some giveback with his walk rate would make sense. Still, he seems to have established himself on the big-league pitching staff and the expectation is that Holmes will be in the mix for a rotation spot this spring. Atlanta will have to limit him at some point, but somewhere around 120 innings might be possible if his health cooperates.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Has high pitch count in no-decision

Holmes completed four scoreless innings against Philadelphia on Wednesday, allowing three hits and issuing four walks while striking out six batters in a no-decision. There were definitely positives to take away from Holmes' performance, as he notched 12 whiffs en route to six punchouts while holding the Phillies scoreless. However, the right-hander was very inefficient -- he needed 104 pitches to get through four innings due in part to issuing four free passes. Holmes has struggled with his control early in the campaign, handing out eight walks across his first nine innings, though he's also racked up 11 strikeouts in that span. His inability to complete more than four innings in his first two starts (he also has a one-inning relief appearance) isn't promising, but Holmes will likely stick in the rotation even when Spencer Strider (elbow) returns to the big-league club, given Reynaldo Lopez is set for an extended absence after undergoing shoulder surgery Tuesday.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Atlanta-Miami postponed Sunday

Holmes won't start as scheduled Sunday versus the Marlins after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. Holmes was scheduled to close out the series for Atlanta, but a rainout thwarted those plans. The right-hander has given up four earned runs with a 5:4 K:BB across five innings this season. According to Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Holmes will be pushed back three days in the schedule and will make his next start Wednesday against the Phillies in Atlanta.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Takes loss in first start of season

Holmes (0-1) took the loss against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three batters over four innings. This was actually Holmes' second outing of the campaign -- he came out of the bullpen for one scoreless frame in Atlanta's Opening Day loss to San Diego. While he was able to toss 89 pitches Monday, that got the right-hander through only four innings. Two of the four batters Holmes walked came around to score, and he yielded a home run and a double among the four hits against him. With Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) landing on the IL, Holmes could be able to stick in the rotation even after Spencer Strider (elbow) is activated this month.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Used in relief Thursday

Holmes struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief during Thursday's loss to the Padres. The 29-year-old right-hander won a spot in Atlanta's initial rotation, but with his first start not expected to come until Monday, Holmes was available to come out of the bullpen for the final frame of a 7-4 loss. The usage could be an early signal that he's more likely than AJ Smith-Shawver to shift to a relief role once Spencer Strider (elbow) is ready to make his 2025 debut, but the performance of Holmes and Smith-Shawver as starters over the next few weeks will ultimately be the biggest factor in that decision.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Fully stretched out

Holmes tossed 93 pitches (63 strikes) in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out three. The right-hander seems ready for Opening Day as he prepares to begin the season in Atlanta's rotation. Holmes posted a 3.56 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 70:15 K:BB over 68.1 big-league innings last year while working primarily in relief, but the organization had plenty of success in 2024 with Reynaldo Lopez's conversion to the rotation.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Viewed as likely No. 5 starter

Holmes is seen as the early favorite to retain a spot in the rotation once Spencer Strider (elbow) is healthy, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Holmes and Ian Anderson are both out of minor-league options and are expected to round out the Opening Day rotation behind Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez and Spencer Schwellenbach, but one of the duo will get bumped once Strider is cleared to make his return from an internal brace procedure on his elbow performed last April. General manager Alex Anthopoulos views Holmes as ahead of Anderson in that battle. "Look, I mention him -- because of the way he pitched last year for us and so on, he'd be the front-runner for that spot," Anthopoulos said Friday. "We think Grant's got significant upside. He's got a plus curveball, plus slider, throws strikes." On the other hand, Anthopoulos also suggested Holmes could move to the bullpen at some point, and Holmes has a lot more experience in that role -- 65 of his 68 appearances at Triple-A Gwinnett over the last two seasons have come in relief, while Anderson has been exclusively a starter throughout his career.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Fans seven in clutch performance

Holmes came away with a no-decision in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Mets, allowing only one hit and one walk over four innings. He struck out seven. Atlanta needed to win at least one of the two games in Monday's twin bill to make the playoffs, and after dropping the matinee, the original plan was to turn to ace Chris Sale in the must-win nightcap. Back spasms made Sale unavailable however, forcing the team to turn to Holmes with its season on the line, and the 28-year-old rookie right-hander rose to the occasion. He wraps up his first regular season in the majors with a 3.56 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 70:15 K:BB over 68.1 innings in a swingman role, but after throwing 53 pitches (35 strikes) Monday, Holmes may not be available during the Wild Card Round against the Padres.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Fans five in no-decision

Holmes came away with a no-decision in Sunday's win over the Marlins, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over four-plus innings. He struck out five. The righty got the hook after 62 pitches (42 strikes) having put the first two batters of the fifth inning aboard on a walk and a double, but Dylan Lee bailed him out and stranded the runners. Holmes hasn't lasted longer than four innings in either of his two starts since rejoining the rotation, allowing two runs in each with a 7:3 K:BB. He is scheduled to get one more turn before the end of the regular season, at home against the Royals this weekend, but he can't be counted on to last long enough to qualify for a win.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Getting another start

Holmes is scheduled to start Sunday against the Marlins at LoanDepot Park. After making eight straight appearances out of the bullpen, Holmes was thrust back into the rotation Tuesday as a replacement for Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder), who was placed on the injured list the week prior. While taking the hill Tuesday on two days' rest, Holmes took a no-decision against the Reds, covering four innings on 78 pitches and giving up two earned runs. Holmes should be able to provide Atlanta with more length as he makes his second turn through the rotation Sunday.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Nabs win in relief

Holmes (2-0) was credited with the win in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Phillies, striking out two over two perfect innings of relief. Bumped back to the bullpen upon the return of Reynaldo Lopez from the injured list, Holmes wound up taking over for Lopez in the sixth inning Tuesday and become the pitcher of record when Atlanta took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Holmes has pitched well in a swingman role in his first MLB campaign, and the 28-year-old righty has a 3.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 49:10 K:BB through his first 47 big-league innings.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Moving to bullpen

Manager Brian Snitker said Tuesday that Holmes will move to the bullpen to fill a multi-inning role, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game Atlanta reports. Holmes had made four consecutive starts for Atlanta, going 1-0 with a 4.57 ERA and a 26:5 K:BB across 21.2 innings. However, with Reynaldo Lopez healthy, Holmes will shift into the bullpen. In 10 relief appearances, Holmes has logged a 2.70 ERA across 23.1 innings.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Yields five runs in Coors Field

Holmes did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 loss to Colorado, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out eight. Despite generating an impressive 21 whiffs, the 28-year-old rookie couldn't contain the Rockies in his first appearance at Coors Field. After this performance, Holmes' ERA since joining the rotation July 29 has ballooned to 5.52 in 14.2 innings across three starts. However, he has been a solid contributor in the strikeout department, generating 20 Ks against four walks over that span. Holmes is currently scheduled to make his next outing in San Francisco next week.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Staying in rotation

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Tuesday that Holmes will remain in the rotation as the club's No. 5 starter in the wake of Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) landing on the injured list, Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com reports. Though Lopez hadn't pitched since July 28, Atlanta had been holding out hope for a little over a week that the right-hander would avoid a stint on the IL before he was finally deactivated Monday. Holmes had already made starts in his last two appearances while Max Fried (forearm) was on the shelf, and though Fried has since been activated, Lopez's absence will extend Holmes' run in the rotation. Since receiving his first MLB call-up in mid-June, Holmes has compiled a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB in 33 innings over 12 appearances. Despite his quality numbers between the bullpen and rotation, Holmes doesn't profile as an appealing streaming option for his next start, which is expected to fall this weekend against the Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Allows three runs

Holmes allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus Miami on Saturday. Holmes was unable to replicate his previous outing in which he logged five innings of one-run ball. Jake Burger tagged him for a solo home run and an RBI single, and Jesus Sanchez added an RBI double to tie the game in the fifth inning. This may have been Holmes' last turn through the rotation, as Atlanta will get Max Fried (forearm) back Sunday and will hope to see Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) return next week. For the season, Holmes has a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB over 33 innings over 12 appearances (two starts).

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Drawing second start

Holmes is slated to start Saturday's game against the Marlins. Holmes had made his first 10 MLB appearances out of the Atlanta bullpen, but he was called upon for a start in Monday's game against the Brewers. He took a no-decision in Atlanta's 8-3 loss, covering five innings and striking out eight while allowing just one run on three hits and no walks. The performance was enough to earn Holmes a second turn through the rotation, but he could be at risk of heading back to the bullpen as soon as next week if both Max Fried (forearm) and Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) are ready to make starts.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Joins Atlanta on MiLB deal

Holmes signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Wednesday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports. The 26-year-old was released by the Athletics in late July and will now receive a chance with another organization. Holmes appeared in 28 games at the Triple-A level before being let go and had an 8.27 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB over 37 innings.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Strong spring continues

Holmes was credited with a save in a Cactus League win over the Padres on Friday, allowing one hit and hitting a batter over two scoreless innings while recording four strikeouts. The 24-year-old has logged a trio of two-inning outings thus far this spring, giving up just two hits and two walks while ringing up six strikeouts overall and allowing just one earned run. Holmes got up to Triple-A Las Vegas in 2019, albeit for just a 4.2-inning sample, posting a 1.93 ERA following a 3.31 figure across 81.2 frames at Double-A Midland earlier that same season. Given his impressive showing thus far, Holmes could be in the mix for an Opening Day bullpen roster spot.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Headed to Triple-A

Holmes was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. Holmes tossed a scoreless inning during his time at big-league camp. He spent the majority of the year at Double-A a season ago, where he posted a 4.49 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with 150 punchouts over 148.1 frames.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Joins 40-man roster

Holmes (shoulder) was added to Oakland's 40-man roster Tuesday. Holmes had his contract purchased in an effort to protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. He missed the majority of the 2018 season with a rotator cuff injury, returning to the mound briefly with High-A Stockton in August before getting shut down with another shoulder issue at the beginning of October. His status for the 2019 season is currently unknown.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Set for shoulder re-examination

Holmes was shut down from all throwing activities late in the season and will have his shoulder re-evaluated in the near future, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. Holmes suffered a rotator cuff injury during spring training and didn't make it back into action until late August at the High-A level. It doesn't appear as though he's out of the woods just yet, and the right-hander could be facing another long absence should tests reveal that he's dealing with a major injury.
