  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Goes four innings vs. Reds

Holmes didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Cincinnati, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out two. Making his return to Atlanta's rotation in place of Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder), Holmes was only able to get through four innings Tuesday, needing 78 pitches. The 28-year-old Holmes pitched well in his last start before moving to the bullpen, allowing two runs over seven innings in a win versus San Francisco. Overall, Holmes sports a 3.84 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP and 56:13 K:BB across 58.2 innings this season. With Lopez likely sidelined for the rest of the regular season, Holmes figures to remain in Atlanta's rotation. He's currently scheduled for a road matchup with the Marlins this weekend.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Nabs win in relief

Holmes (2-0) was credited with the win in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Phillies, striking out two over two perfect innings of relief. Bumped back to the bullpen upon the return of Reynaldo Lopez from the injured list, Holmes wound up taking over for Lopez in the sixth inning Tuesday and become the pitcher of record when Atlanta took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Holmes has pitched well in a swingman role in his first MLB campaign, and the 28-year-old righty has a 3.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 49:10 K:BB through his first 47 big-league innings.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Moving to bullpen

Manager Brian Snitker said Tuesday that Holmes will move to the bullpen to fill a multi-inning role, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game Atlanta reports. Holmes had made four consecutive starts for Atlanta, going 1-0 with a 4.57 ERA and a 26:5 K:BB across 21.2 innings. However, with Reynaldo Lopez healthy, Holmes will shift into the bullpen. In 10 relief appearances, Holmes has logged a 2.70 ERA across 23.1 innings.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Earns first win

Holmes (1-0) picked up the win over the Giants on Wednesday, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out six. Holmes didn't get off to the start he'd hoped for, surrendering a leadoff home run to Tyler Fitzgerald on the first pitch he threw before also allowing a single in the opening frame. However, the right-hander recovered nicely, keeping the Giants off the board before allowing an RBI single in the seventh. It marked Holmes' first win on the campaign, and he's now recorded at least six strikeouts in three of his last four starts. On the downside, he's also allowed multiple runs in three consecutive outings and has coughed up a long ball in four straight games.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Yields five runs in Coors Field

Holmes did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 loss to Colorado, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out eight. Despite generating an impressive 21 whiffs, the 28-year-old rookie couldn't contain the Rockies in his first appearance at Coors Field. After this performance, Holmes' ERA since joining the rotation July 29 has ballooned to 5.52 in 14.2 innings across three starts. However, he has been a solid contributor in the strikeout department, generating 20 Ks against four walks over that span. Holmes is currently scheduled to make his next outing in San Francisco next week.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Staying in rotation

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Tuesday that Holmes will remain in the rotation as the club's No. 5 starter in the wake of Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) landing on the injured list, Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com reports. Though Lopez hadn't pitched since July 28, Atlanta had been holding out hope for a little over a week that the right-hander would avoid a stint on the IL before he was finally deactivated Monday. Holmes had already made starts in his last two appearances while Max Fried (forearm) was on the shelf, and though Fried has since been activated, Lopez's absence will extend Holmes' run in the rotation. Since receiving his first MLB call-up in mid-June, Holmes has compiled a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB in 33 innings over 12 appearances. Despite his quality numbers between the bullpen and rotation, Holmes doesn't profile as an appealing streaming option for his next start, which is expected to fall this weekend against the Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Allows three runs

Holmes allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus Miami on Saturday. Holmes was unable to replicate his previous outing in which he logged five innings of one-run ball. Jake Burger tagged him for a solo home run and an RBI single, and Jesus Sanchez added an RBI double to tie the game in the fifth inning. This may have been Holmes' last turn through the rotation, as Atlanta will get Max Fried (forearm) back Sunday and will hope to see Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) return next week. For the season, Holmes has a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB over 33 innings over 12 appearances (two starts).

  • Braves' Grant Holmes: Drawing second start

Holmes is slated to start Saturday's game against the Marlins. Holmes had made his first 10 MLB appearances out of the Atlanta bullpen, but he was called upon for a start in Monday's game against the Brewers. He took a no-decision in Atlanta's 8-3 loss, covering five innings and striking out eight while allowing just one run on three hits and no walks. The performance was enough to earn Holmes a second turn through the rotation, but he could be at risk of heading back to the bullpen as soon as next week if both Max Fried (forearm) and Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) are ready to make starts.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Strong spring continues

Holmes was credited with a save in a Cactus League win over the Padres on Friday, allowing one hit and hitting a batter over two scoreless innings while recording four strikeouts. The 24-year-old has logged a trio of two-inning outings thus far this spring, giving up just two hits and two walks while ringing up six strikeouts overall and allowing just one earned run. Holmes got up to Triple-A Las Vegas in 2019, albeit for just a 4.2-inning sample, posting a 1.93 ERA following a 3.31 figure across 81.2 frames at Double-A Midland earlier that same season. Given his impressive showing thus far, Holmes could be in the mix for an Opening Day bullpen roster spot.

Holmes was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. Holmes tossed a scoreless inning during his time at big-league camp. He spent the majority of the year at Double-A a season ago, where he posted a 4.49 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with 150 punchouts over 148.1 frames.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Joins 40-man roster

Holmes (shoulder) was added to Oakland's 40-man roster Tuesday. Holmes had his contract purchased in an effort to protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. He missed the majority of the 2018 season with a rotator cuff injury, returning to the mound briefly with High-A Stockton in August before getting shut down with another shoulder issue at the beginning of October. His status for the 2019 season is currently unknown.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Set for shoulder re-examination

Holmes was shut down from all throwing activities late in the season and will have his shoulder re-evaluated in the near future, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. Holmes suffered a rotator cuff injury during spring training and didn't make it back into action until late August at the High-A level. It doesn't appear as though he's out of the woods just yet, and the right-hander could be facing another long absence should tests reveal that he's dealing with a major injury.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Out with rotator cuff injury

Holmes will be out for an extended period of time due to a rotator cuff injury, TheAthletic.com reports. Holmes hurt his shoulder early in spring training and it sounds like a significant injury. Holmes is entering his third year with the Athletics organization after being acquired from the Dodgers as part of the Josh Reddick and Rich Hill deal back in 2016. The young righty made 24 starts for Double-A Midland last season, posting a 4.49 ERA and 13.8 percent K-BB rate over 148.1 innings of work.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Slated for bullpen session Monday

Holmes (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Holmes was able to throw on flat ground Sunday with no issues, clearing the way for him to toss a bullpen for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury earlier in camp. Assuming everything goes as planned Monday, Holmes should progress to facing live hitters before working his way into spring games. The 22-year-old is expected to open the season in the minors, though he could make his big-league debut this summer.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Dealing with shoulder injury

Holmes, who has been dealing with a shoulder issue, will throw on flat ground Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. There hasn't been much news on the pitching prospect's shoulder injury, so the hope is that it's only a minor affliction. Holmes is just 22 years old with a bright future but was expected to begin the year in the minors all along, even after receiving an invite to big-league camp.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: On the move to Oakland

Holmes was traded to the A's on Monday as part of a package that sends Josh Reddick and Rich Hill to the Dodgers, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Holmes is not blowing away the competition at the High-A level this year, but he has allowed more than three earned runs in a start just four times and is still just 20 years old, so there is plenty to like about his future. He figures to play out the season at the High-A level having reached it for the first time this year, which likely puts him a couple years away from being an option for Oakland's starting rotation.

  • Dodgers' Grant Holmes: Not overmatched in hitter-friendly confines at High-A

Holmes, 20, has a 3.48 ERA and 86:34 K:BB through 85.1 innings at High-A Rancho Cucamonga. The statistics for Holmes are better than they appear, as he has been pitching in the hitter-friendly confines of the California League. Still, he has walked 12 batters in his last three starts, and there are whispers that he would be better served as a reliever than in the starting rotation. He will stick in the rotation for now, though, and is still striking out about one batter per inning.

  • Dodgers' Grant Holmes: 14 runs in his last 15 innings for High-A Rancho Cucamonga

Holmes has allowed 14 runs in 15 innings over his last three starts and now sports a 4.94 ERA for High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Holmes does have 31 strikeouts in 31 innings, but, but the 14 walks have hurt and he's allowed 34 hits. Holmes remains a solid prospect, but he may be a one level per year sort of guy.
