Jack Flaherty had an interesting 2024 season after languishing in prior seasons attempting to recover what he last was in 2019 with the Cardinals. He may never get back to that level of success, but he came closer in 2024 than in any other season since his peak, even with the midseason change of employment. Flaherty came into the season working on his pitch shape and repertoire, and it showed in his success. The actual outcomes of his four-seamers in 2024 (.245 BA) matched the expected outcomes the pitch failed to realize in 2023 (.247 xBA), but the slider is where the success story truly lies. Flaherty had both a cutter and slider in 2023, and neither was an effective pitch by actual nor expected results. Flaherty scrapped the cutter and worked on the slider, and the work paid off. The league average against the pitch dropped from .339 to .222, while the pitch's whiff rate jumped from 26.5 to 36.3 percent. The postseason version of Flaherty reminds us of his inconsistent track record, and the last time he worked this much in a season, the subsequent season was disastrous. The 2024 season was a much-needed career recovery for Flaherty, but the path forward is anything but certain given his track record.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Sharp in second spring outing

Flaherty tossed four scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. He walked two and struck out three. Flaherty was just about flawless in his second spring outing. The Tigers gave him more than 10 days off between Grapefruit League starts, so it appears that the team is taking it easy on the righty before the season begins. Flaherty tossed a total of 162 innings for the Tigers and Dodgers last regular season, then saw another 22 innings in the postseason for Los Angeles as he helped lead the team to a World Series title. The 29-year-old will slot in behind staff ace Tarik Skubal to begin 2025.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Returns to Detroit

Flaherty and the Tigers agreed on a two-year, $35 million contract Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Flaherty will return to Detroit after spending the first half of the 2024 campaign with the team prior to being traded to the Dodgers at the trade deadline in July. The right-hander combined to start 28 regular-season games with Los Angeles and Detroit last year, compiling a 3.17 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with 194 strikeouts over 162 innings. Flaherty will make $25 million in 2025, and his contract includes an opt-out after the season, otherwise he'll make at minimum $10 million in 2026 with the possibility of making as much as $20 million. The 29-year-old figures to again be a valuable asset for fantasy managers in 2025 while operating in a pitcher-friendly ballpark in Detroit.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Records just four outs

Flaherty was tagged four runs on four hits and one walk over just 1.1 innings Wednesday against the Yankees in Game 5 of the World Series. He struck out one and didn't factor in the decision. It's not clear whether the hamstring issue which bothered Flaherty toward the end of his Game 1 start was an issue Wednesday, but he didn't have anything working for him in this one. A one-out walk to Juan Soto in the first inning was followed by back-to-back homers from Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm, and the Yankees tacked on another run with one out in the second before Flaherty was pulled. The early hook by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts proved to be a wise move, as the bullpen held the Yankees to just two runs over the next 7.2 frames while the offense did enough to pull out the victory. Flaherty had an uneven postseason, mixing in some stellar efforts with some clunkers, and he ultimately finished with a 7.36 ERA and 15:9 K:BB over 22 innings covering five starts.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Battling hamstring issue

Manager Dave Roberts said Saturday that Flaherty was removed from his start in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday due to hamstring tightness, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Flaherty's hamstring reportedly began bothering him just before he threw the pitch that Giancarlo Stanton sent 412 feet into left field during the sixth inning. While Flaherty's injury was enough to force him out of the game after 90 pitches, the Dodgers don't believe it will affect his availability for the rest of the series, keeping him in line to start a potential Game 5.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Named Game 1 starter

Flaherty has been named the Dodgers' starter for Game 1 of the World Series versus the Yankees on Friday, Noah Camras of DodgersNation.com reports. Flaherty made his last start in Game 5 of the NLCS against the Mets this past Friday, so he will head into Game 1 of the World Series with six full days of rest. The right-hander had an excellent start in Game 1 of the NLCS, shutting out the Mets across seven innings. However, the Mets got to him in his second outing, scoring eight runs in just three innings. With Flaherty set to go Friday, it is likely Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Walker Buehler will start the following two games, respectively.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Penciled in for Game 5

Flaherty will start in Game 5 of the NLCS against the Mets on Friday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Flaherty was dominant in Game 1 of the series, striking out six batters over seven shutout innings en route to a 9-0 victory. He'll look to put on a similar performance Friday against a Mets offense that owns a .698 OPS across nine postseason contests.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Set to start Game 1

Flaherty will start Sunday in Game 1 of the NLCS against the Mets, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Flaherty was roughed up during his first outing of the postseason, surrendering four earned runs over 5.1 innings in a loss to San Diego, but he figures to have a good chance to bounce back Sunday after turning in a 3.17 ERA during the regular season.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Bumped to Game 2

Flaherty will start in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Padres on Sunday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. The Dodgers originally planned to start Flaherty in Game 1, but they are instead opting to start Yoshinobu Yamamoto to allow Yamamoto five days rest before potentially pitching in a decisive Game 5. Flaherty had a solid regular season, but he did struggle a bit down the stretch by allowing nine earned runs across his final 14 frames with a 14:9 K:BB.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Tapped for Game 1 start

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Wednesday that the club plans to start Flaherty on Saturday in Game 1 of the NLDS, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. Flaherty will be tasked with Game 1 before the Dodgers turn to Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Game 2. The 28-year-old posted a 3.58 ERA and 61:19 K:BB across 55.1 innings covering 10 starts for the Dodgers after being acquired from the Tigers at the trade deadline.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Chased early in loss

Flaherty (12-7) allowed four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four over three innings to take the loss versus Atlanta on Saturday. The four walks were a season high for Flaherty, who fell short of the five-inning mark for the first time all year. Just 45 of his 83 pitches went for strikes in this poor performance, which came one start after his longest outing of the year, a 7.1-inning scoreless spectacle versus the Guardians last Sunday. Flaherty is now at a 3.04 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 184:33 K:BB through 151 innings between the Dodgers and Tigers this year. He would appear to have a good chance to bounce back his next time out, as he's projected to start in Miami.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Blanks Guardians

Flaherty (12-6) got the win Sunday over the Guardians, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out six. It was Flaherty's first time this year reaching seven innings and also his first time not walking a batter since June 4. He's now 5-1 with a 2.61 ERA in seven starts with the Dodgers and has given up one run or less in three of his last four starts. For the year, Flaherty owns a 2.86 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 180:29 K:BB in 148 innings. He lines up for a road start against Atlanta over the weekend his next time out.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Posts quality start

Flaherty (10-6) took the loss Tuesday against the Orioles, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings. Flaherty was punished by the long ball Tuesday, as he allowed a solo home run to Ryan O'Hearn in the second and a two-run blast to Ramos Urias in the fifth, which proved to be the difference in the game. The loss was Flaherty's first since June 27 and he's now pitched to a 3.49 ERA over five starts with the Dodgers. For the year, the 28-year-old owns a 3.07 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 167:26 K:BB in 135 innings. He lines up for a road start against the Diamondbacks this weekend.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Fans seven in no-decision

Flaherty allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over five innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Thursday. Flaherty served up two homers resulting in three runs during the first frame as the Brewers jumped out to an early lead. The right-hander was able to settle down from there and didn't let any more runs cross the plate, averting what initially seemed like a potential blowup outing. Flaherty once again had his swing-and-miss stuff working, as he racked up 15 swinging strikes and seven punchouts -- marks he's reached in each of his three starts with the Dodgers so far. The veteran hurler has an impressive 24:4 K:BB over 16.2 innings during that span.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Racks up 10 strikeouts in win

Flaherty (9-5) allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Pirates on Friday. Flaherty allowed a solo shot to Oneil Cruz and a three-run home run to Joey Bart in the fifth. This was the first time in his last five starts that Flaherty gave up more than two runs, but the Dodgers gave him ample run support. The right-hander is now at a 2.97 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 150:21 K:BB through 118.1 innings over 20 starts between the Dodgers and the Tigers. Flaherty is projected for a tough road outing in Milwaukee for his next start.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Hurls six scoreless frames in debut

Flaherty improved to 8-5 on the season Saturday in the Dodgers' 10-0 win over the Athletics while striking out seven over six shutout innings. He scattered five hits and one walk. Flaherty generated 16 whiffs in his Dodgers debut and generally stayed out of trouble after allowing back-to-back singles to begin the first inning, as he conceded just three more base hits and a walk the rest of the way. Dating back to his time in Detroit, Flaherty has yet to throw fewer than five innings in any start this season. Though he had already picked up seven wins in his 18 outings with Detroit, Flaherty's win potential should only increase moving forward in his future starts while he's backed by a superior Dodgers lineup.

  • Dodgers' Jack Flaherty: Debuting for new team Saturday

Flaherty is slated to make his first start with the Dodgers in Oakland on Saturday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Before being traded to Los Angeles on Tuesday, Flaherty was scheduled to make his next start with the Tigers on Thursday. He'll instead get a couple extra days of rest and take the mound in the middle game of Los Angeles' weekend set in Oakland. Flaherty will look to extend a fantastic two-month stretch during which he's posted a 1.77 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 52:10 K:BB over 45.2 innings while going 6-1 across eight starts.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Gets scratched from start Monday

The Tigers scratched Flaherty from his scheduled start Monday against the Guardians, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Flaherty isn't dealing with an injury, but the Tigers will hold him out Monday and avoid the risk of exposing him to a setback on the health front that could jeopardize a potential trade ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Though no trade appears to be imminent at the moment, Flaherty will likely be a sought-after arm, given that he's on an expiring contract and has been dominant over his 18 starts with the Tigers this season (2.95 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 133:19 K:BB in 106.2 innings). The Tigers haven't named a replacement starter for Monday's contest.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Looks sharp in no-decision

Flaherty allowed an unearned run on three hits and two walks across six innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Guardians. He struck out six. In what was possibly his last start for Detroit, Flaherty made sure to leave a good impression. The righty lowered his season ERA to 2.95 and allowed zero earned runs for the fifth time this year. Flaherty is on a one-year deal, which has naturally made him a much-discussed trade candidate with the Tigers sitting at 50-53. He is currently penciled in to take the mound again Monday against the Guardians once more, but with the trade deadline on Tuesday, it remains to be seen if the 28-year-old will still be with the team by the time his next turn in the rotation comes around. If Flaherty is dealt, he should remain a strong fantasy asset given his performance so far this season.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Fans eight in win

Flaherty (7-5) earned the win Friday versus Toronto, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out eight. The Detroit right-hander collected his second consecutive win, as he conjured 17 whiffs to produce eight punchouts. In his second start since returning from a back injury, Flaherty masterfully commanded his arsenal over 98 pitches. He has now pitched to a 3.13 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 127:17 K:BB across 100.2 innings, making him a prime trade target at the upcoming July 30 deadline. Flaherty is currently scheduled to make his next start against the Guardians on the road.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Returns in stride

Flaherty (6-5) picked up the win Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings against the Guardians. He struck out four. Flaherty, who had not pitched since June 27 due to lingering back issues, received plenty of run support while holding the Guardians' lineup in check, save for a solo homer in the third by Bo Naylor. Flaherty managed 83 pitches through six innings and was staked with a 10-1 lead by the time he was replaced. It was the fifth time in six starts Flaherty has allowed no more than one run, with the lone exception coming in his previous start, which immediately preceded his two-week hiatus. Flaherty has been a model of consistency in his first year in Detroit, never completing a full seven innings yet also never completing fewer than five through 16 starts this season. Through 95 innings, he's recorded 119 strikeouts to go along with a 3.13 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.
