  • Pirates' Domingo German: Remains in organization

German cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. German was designated for assignment Thursday by the Pirates but will stick in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. In two stints with Pittsburgh this season, the 32-year-old has a 7.84 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 18:13 K:BB across 20.2 innings.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Cast away by Pirates again

The Pirates designated German for assignment Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. The move comes after German's poor outing Wednesday in which he allowed six earned runs on nine hits across three innings. The 32-year-old ended up making seven total appearances for the Pirates in his return to the majors. He had allowed just two earned runs in his first 12.0 innings, but surrendered 16 earned runs in his last 8.2 innings. Since departing the Yankees in November, German had two stints with the Pirates, the second of which has come to a close. In a corresponding move, Joey Wentz was activated Thursday after being claimed off waivers from Detroit on Tuesday.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Poor showing in start

German (0-1) allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over three innings to take the loss versus the Cubs on Wednesday. German didn't pitch well, but it wouldn't have made much difference considering the Pirates couldn't muster a hit. He's given up 17 runs (16 earned) over his last 8.2 innings, a span that includes Wednesday's start and a pair of relief appearances. For the year, German has a 7.84 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 18:13 K:BB through 20.2 innings over seven appearances (two starts). The Pirates haven't revealed if he'll get a chance to stay in the rotation after this poor outing.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Making start Wednesday

German is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. At least temporarily, the Pirates will expand the rotation to a six men, with the addition of German building in an additional day of rest between starts for rookies Paul Skenes and Jared Jones. German tossed six scoreless innings against the Rangers in his lone other start for the Pirates on Aug. 21, but he worked in long relief in his last two appearances, covering 5.2 innings while yielding 10 runs on 11 hits and five walks.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Sharp in first Pirates start

German allowed three hits and four walks over six scoreless innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Rangers. He struck out four. Making his first start this season, German was excellent, blanking the Rangers over six frames despite allowing at least one baserunner in five frames. The 31-year-old right-hander has allowed just two runs through 12 innings this year with the Pirates, posting a 1.00 WHIP with eight strikeouts. However, with Jared Jones (lat) nearing a return, German figures to head back to a swingman role in Pittsburgh.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Making start Wednesday

German will start Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Hannah Mears of SportsNet Pittsburgh reports. German has given up two runs over six innings while working out of the Pirates' bullpen as a multi-inning reliever, and Wednesday will mark his first time starting a big-league game this season. The 32-year-old righty posted a 5.29 ERA over 68 innings while working as a starter at Triple-A Indianapolis, though he'll have the advantage of facing a Rangers offense that ranks 23rd in the majors in OPS (.686).

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Contract selected

The Pirates selected German's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. German hasn't had much success in Triple-A this season, posting a 5.29 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 68 innings across 13 starts. He'll join the big-league pitching staff nonetheless and will presumably work out of the bullpen as a multi-inning reliever. Hunter Stratton was optioned to Indianapolis to create space on the active roster, and Josh Walker was DFA'd to open a 40-man roster spot.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Set to join major-league roster

German is set to have his contract selected from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. German will join the major-league roster after compiling a 5.29 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 66 strikeouts over 68 innings in 13 starts with Indianapolis this season. The right-hander had an opt-out in his contract for Friday, so the Pirates opted to add him to the big-league roster. It's unclear if German will draw a start or not, but more information will likely be provided when the move is made official.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Back with Pittsburgh

German re-signed Sunday with the Pirates on a minor-league contract, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. German had opted out of his minor-league deal with the Pirates last week, but after canvassing the open market, he's elected to rejoin the organization. His new contract contains an Aug. 9 opt-out clause, so he could choose to pursue free agency once again in three weeks if he's not promoted to the big leagues before then. German has turned in a 5.36 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 48:28 K:BB across 50.1 innings over his 10 starts with Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

  • Domingo German: Released by Pittsburgh

The Pirates released German on Tuesday. Per Robert Murray of FanSided.com, German exercised an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract. German had made 11 starts between Single-A Bradenton and Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a 5.36 ERA and 48:28 K:BB over 50.1 innings in 10 appearances at the latter stop. The 31-year-old holds a career 4.41 ERA over parts of six major-league seasons and is now free to sign with another organization. Murray notes that the Pirates are open to re-signing the righty.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Makes season debut

German allowed one run while striking out four over four innings in his season debut Tuesday with Single-A Bradenton. It's his first game action since last July, as the Yankees placed German on the restricted list in August following a clubhouse incident. He became a free agent after being outrighted off New York's 40-man roster and eventually signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates in March. German could eventually become a rotation option for Pittsburgh later this season, but it's unlikely to be anytime soon.

  • Domingo German: Becomes free agent

German (personal) elected to become a free agent Monday. The transaction comes a few days after German was removed from the Yankees' 40-man roster. Beyond his uneven performance on the field, German has had multiple off-the-field issues which figure to impact his allure as a free agent.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Outrighted off 40-man roster

The Yankees outrighted German (personal) to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. German missed the final two months of the 2023 season after voluntarily submitting to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse in early August. The 31-year-old right-hander has now been removed from the 40-man roster in New York and can head into free agency if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Goes on restricted list

German was placed on the restricted list Wednesday after agreeing to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. "It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being," reads a statement from the Yankees. "We will respect his privacy as he begins this process." Nestor Cortes (shoulder) has cut short his minor-league rehab assignment and is presumably going to take over German's spot in the rotation beginning Saturday against the Astros. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said German will not return this season, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Scratched due to arm discomfort

German was scratched from his start Monday against the Rays due to discomfort in his right armpit, but manager Aaron Boone said that he doesn't expect the 30-year-old to land on the 15-day injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. German first experienced the discomfort Sunday and was unable to play catch, prompting the Yankees to call up Jhony Brito from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on short notice to make a spot start. The Yankees will have German visit with a doctor later Monday, and that meeting should help shed light on whether the right-hander will be able to make his next turn through the rotation. German is tentatively lined up to start Saturday versus the Astros at Yankee Stadium.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Mauled by Mets

German (5-7) took the loss Tuesday as the Yankees were downed 9-3 by the Mets, coughing up six runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over six innings. He struck out nine. The right-hander had little trouble with most of the Mets' lineup, but Pete Alonso was his nemesis, launching homers off German in the third and sixth innings. On the bright side, he did strike out nine batters for the third straight outing, and German has a 1.25 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings over four July starts, albeit with a 5.64 ERA. He'll try to keep the ball in the yard in his next trip to the mound, which is likely to come at home early next week against the Rays.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Strikes out nine in loss

German (5-6) allowed five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out nine over six innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Angels. German has struck out nine in three of his last four starts, but he was unable to contain the Angels' offense. Two of the four hits he allowed went for extra bases, and he also allowed a run to score on a wild pitch in this outing. The right-hander is now at a 4.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 101:31 K:BB through 97.2 innings through 18 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Mets next week.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Shines in no-decision

German did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks over six innings in a 7-4 loss to the Cubs. He struck out nine. German turned in a quality start Sunday, allowing just one hit while pitching into the sixth inning for the second time in his last five appearances. German enters the All-Star break on a high note, owning a 1.40 ERA and a 23:3 K:BB across his last three outings (19.1 innings). However, fantasy managers should proceed with caution with the 30-year-old, as he carried a 5.10 ERA and a 69:25 K:BB on the year prior to his three recent starts.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Gets hook in fifth inning

German allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits and no walks while striking out five batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against Baltimore on Monday. In his first start since tossing the 24th perfect game in MLB history last Wednesday, German gave up a season-high nine hits. Only one of those (a double) went for extra bases, but the Orioles generated constant enough traffic to make German labor, and the right-hander exited with 86 pitches on his ledger following back-to-back Baltimore singles with one out in the fifth frame. Though the brilliance of German's perfecto will understandably linger for some time, fantasy managers should note that the hurler has otherwise struggled of late, failing to complete five innings in three of his past four starts and posting an 8.20 ERA (even including the perfect game) over 18.2 innings during that span.

  • Yankees' Domingo German: Sleeper pitchers for Week 15 (July 3-9)

It's all downhill for Domingo German coming off a perfect game, and nobody thinks he's suddenly an ace. But he is in line for two starts, has a swinging-strike rate on par with some of the elites, and is legitimately good at limiting baserunners.
