Padres' Brian O'Grady: Dropped from 40-man roster
O'Grady cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.
O'Grady filled a minor role as a depth outfielder this season but didn't acquit himself well, hitting .157/.267/.333 in 61 plate appearances. Heading into his age-30 season, it's no surprise to see him fail to get claimed off waivers given that he's yet to find success at the major-league level.

O'Grady hit a solo home run in his only plate appearance during Sunday's loss to the Marlins.
With San Diego trailing 9-2 and down to its final out, O'Grady provided a brief delay of the inevitable with a solo shot to right field. The long ball was his second of the campaign. O'Grady has slashed an impressive .314/.387/.628 in the minors this season but has been mostly unproductive with the big club, batting .178 with a 27.3 percent strikeout rate.

Padres' Brian O'Grady: Stars in Monday's win
O'Grady went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, an RBI double and a walk Monday in the Padres' 9-4 win over the Cubs.
Called up from Triple-A El Paso earlier in the day, O'Grady stepped into the starting nine in place of a resting Wil Myers and didn't take long to make an impact. O'Grady gave the Padres a four-run lead when he slugged a 407-foot blast off Adbert Alzolay in the third inning, and he later added another run-scoring extra-base hit in the bottom of the eighth for good measure. Despite the stellar showing Monday, O'Grady doesn't look like he'll be in line for regular playing time in the San Diego outfield with Myers, Tommy Pham and Jurickson Profar all healthy and with Trent Grisham (heel) likely to return from the injured list later this week.

Padres' Brian O'Grady: Back in big leagues
O'Grady was recalled by the Padres on Monday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Hopefully O'Grady didn't make it far after being optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, as he'll turn around and head straight back to the big-league roster a day later. The Padres need an extra outfielder with Trent Grisham (heel) landing on the injured list in a corresponding move. O'Grady has gotten into 11 games while bouncing on and off the active roster this season but has done very little with his limited at-bats, hitting .100/.269/.150.

Three of the players in question are Wil Myers, Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo, all of whom have been factors at the corner-outfield spots this season. O'Grady could be in store for a near-everyday role in the short term until the Padres get some reinforcements in the outfield.

Padres' Brian O'Grady: Sent to alternate site

Padres' Brian O'Grady: Goes deep twice Monday
O'Grady went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, four RBI and two walks Monday in a Cactus League contest versus Milwaukee.
O'Grady is competing for a reserve role this spring, and he badly needed Monday's breakthrough performance with Jorge Mateo -- one of his primary challengers -- hitting well so far. Mateo may still have a leg up considering that he is out of minor-league options (O'Grady is not), but the latter can make a push if he can carry his effort Monday forward.

Padres' Brian O'Grady: Vying for backup CF role
O'Grady will compete for the backup center field job during spring training, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Manager Jayce Tingler mentioned a few Padres players who are likely to see time in center in spring, and O'Grady's experience at the position in the minors would seem to make him a feasible choice to claim the backup CF role if he's able to impress during spring training. However, the 29-year-old has thus far not done much with his big-league opportunities, so it remains to be seen how much playing time he'll get on a San Diego squad that is considered a World Series contender.
