  • Jose Torres: Released by Padres

Torres was cut loose by San Diego on Wednesday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Torres was designated for assignment and outrighted from the club's roster earlier in the week, and will now hit the free-agent market after being released by the organization. The 25-year-old was not a member of the Padres' active roster at any point during the 2018 season due to a violation of the league's domestic violence policy, which eventually led to a season-ending suspension in June. Across 62 relief appearances with the team in 2017, he logged a 4.21 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 63 strikeouts in 68.1 innings.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Outrighted from 40-man roster

Torres was outrighted from San Diego's 40-man roster Monday.

Torres didn't take the field at all during the 2018 season after violating the league's domestic violence policy. He was officially suspended in early June following his placement on the restricted list in February. The left-hander remains in the Padres' organization for the time being.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Suspended for remainder of season

Torres was suspended for the remainder of the 2018 season for violating the league's domestic violence policy, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.

It's officially a 100-game suspension for Torres (retroactive to June 5), which he is not appealing. The 24-year-old has been on the restricted list since February due to the domestic violence incident that took place in December, and results in him sitting out the entirety of the 2018 season.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Domestic incident behind placement on restricted list

Torres was placed on the restricted list as a result of a domestic violence-related incident in December, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.

Besides the alleged domestic issues, the left-hander was also found to be in prohibited possession of a deadly weapon and drugs. Torres pleaded not guilty to initial charges, but he still has another pretrial conference scheduled for Feb. 20. More information should come forth at that time. Major League Baseball and the MLBPA will also investigate the situation following the court proceedings, which could lead to a suspension of some sort for Torres.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Lands on restricted list Monday

Torres was placed on the restricted list Monday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

No other details emerged regarding the reason behind this designation, but it ultimately will keep him from competing for an Opening Day roster spot. The southpaw produced a 4.21 ERA and a 63:16 K:BB in 68.1 innings last season, and he seemed to be trending upward prior to this issue. With Torres out of the picture for now, Buddy Baumann and Kyle McGrath will jockey to be the main lefty behind closer Brad Hand.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Turning things around

Torres gave up two hits over a scoreless inning in a loss to the Giants on Friday.

Torres owns a subpar 4.21 ERA on the year, but he has come on strong in the second half, providing a 1.96 ERA and 5.0 K/BB ratio in 17 appearances since Aug. 6. More importantly, he has given up just one home run during that period after posting an ugly 2.2 HR/9 over his previous 45 outings. The 24-year-old southpaw possesses the arsenal to earn a high-leverage role in 2018 if he can continue to the limit the long ball.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Struggling with home runs

Torres has a 4.69 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 51 strikeouts across 55.2 innings this season.

Torres' major weakness this year has been the home-run ball, as he has given up 13, including 10 over his last 29 innings. The 23-year-old has a 6-3 record and three holds, but has limited fantasy value due to his infrequent usage in high-leverage situations.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Picks up fifth win Tuesday

Torres was the winning pitcher of record Tuesday after recording two outs in relief in a win over Cleveland.

Trevor Cahill (shoulder) couldn't complete five full frames in his first start off the disabled list, so Torres stepped in to pick up the victory. The five wins are nice, but those should be disregarded, as chasing wins from a reliever is not a fruitful venture. The 23-year-old has held his own as a rookie, posting a 4.14 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 4.3 K/BB over 37 innings, but those numbers aren't good enough for use in fantasy as a middle reliever.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: No lingering effects from liner taken off wrist

Torres has pitched 13.1 innings since taking a line drive off his wrist, striking out 11 and giving up five runs, one of which was unearned.

Torres has shown no signs of lingering problems from the line drive on his wrist May 10, posting a 1.20 WHIP and 2.70 ERA since then. The WHIP is actually an increase from the 0.93 he had before the injury, but that number should be ignored as the attention goes to the ERA drop from the 5.40 he was originally posting. On the season, his numbers now stand at a WHIP of 1.06 and ERA of 4.13, respectable stats for a pitcher who only had three big-league innings under his belt coming into the season.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Returns to bullpen Friday

Torres (hand) pitched one-third of an inning in Friday's victory over the White Sox.

A line drive hit Torres on the wrist earlier in the week, but the southpaw was able to avoid a DL stint and returned to action Friday. Although Torres has pitched in 17 games this season, he's not one to see many high-leverage situations as he's converted just one of two save opportunities and owns a lofty 5.28 ERA.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Exits after taking line drive off wrist

Torres left Wednesday's game against the Rangers after taking a line drive off his wrist in the eighth inning , Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Torres walked off the field with the trainer after catching a line drive from the only batter he faced. Fortunately for Torres, the injury occurred on his non-throwing arm, which will help his chances of avoiding a trip to the disabled list. The Padres should update his status after the game.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Notches first save in extra innings

Torres pitched a perfect 12th inning to convert his first save in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Giants.

Torres was called upon in the 12th inning after closer Brandon Maurer had already thrown 1.2 scoreless innings. The 23-year-old left-hander does have a 12.5 K/9 in 13 innings, but he's also allowed seven runs (two home runs) in his limited work. He's unlikely to pitch in many high-leverage situations going forward.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Struggling early on

Torres has struggled to begin the season, allowing seven runs over 10.2 innings.

Torres' statistical bright spots include his 0.84 WHIP and 15 strikeouts compared to just one walk. However, his bloated ERA of 5.91 has led the Padres to generally keep him away from high-leverage situations.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Makes final roster

Torres has been named to the Padres' Opening Day roster, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

After appearing in four games at the end of last season for the Padres, Torres will finally get a chance to shine as a full-fledged member of the bullpen. The 23-year-old impressed this spring with a 2.70 ERA and a sizzling 16:4 K:BB ratio over 10 innings in Cactus League play. He'll likely be used as a middle reliever and lefty specialist to begin the season, but could work his way up with a strong performance.

  • Padres' Jose Torres: Could earn bullpen job

Torres will be one of several pitchers competing for one of the Padres' remaining bullpen spots this spring, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The 23-year-old lefty played across five levels in 2016, but the majority of his work came at the High-A and Double-A levels where he finished with a collective 2.21 ERA and 9.0 K/9 over 61.2 innings. Torres will have to earn his spot in the bullpen with a strong spring, but the fact that he is a southpaw and is already on the 40-man roster bode well for his chances at making the cut.
