White Sox's Chris Shaw: Gets opportunity with ChiSox

Shaw's agency, North Star Sports Management, announced Wednesday that the 28-year-old agreed to a minor-league contract with the White Sox.
Shaw had brief stints in the majors with the Giants in 2018 and 2019, but he's toiled in the minors and independent ranks over the past three years and will face an uphill battle to make it back to baseball's top level. Look for the White Sox to assign Shaw to Triple-A Charlotte or Double-A Birmingham before spring training concludes. Shaw spent the 2022 campaign with the Kentucky Wild Health Genomes of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, slashing .264/.401/.459 with 17 home runs in 117 games.
The Orioles released Shaw on Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
After failing to win a spot on the Orioles' Opening Day roster, Shaw was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk coming out of spring training. The 27-year-old corner outfielder has spent much of the minor-league season on the injured list and struggled mightily in the 14 games he played for Norfolk, slashing .026/.240/.026 while striking out in exactly half of his 50 plate appearances.

Shaw was designated for assignment by the Orioles in late January but went unclaimed on waivers. The 26-year-old appeared in 20 Cactus League games but hit just .071 with three walks and two runs. Shaw will likely begin the season with Triple-A Norfolk.

The 25-year-old joined the Giants for the closing stretch last season but went 1-for-18 over 16 games. Shaw had a .298/.355/.592 slash line at Sacramento last year and will look to replicate those numbers in 2020.
Shaw went 0-for-3 as a designated hitter in Tuesday's 7-6 victory over the Red Sox.
The Boston native was granted his first start of the season, but he was lifted after just three plate appearances once a lefty was brought out of the bullpen. The Red Sox have the right-handed Jhoulys Chacin set to take the bump Wednesday, so Shaw could be in the starting nine again with the benefit of the DH spot. The 25-year-old has been used sparsely (1-for-10) since being called up Sept. 1 despite posting a robust .947 OPS over 75 games with Triple-A Sacramento this year.

The 25-year-old slugger started in Double-A after struggling at Triple-A last season, but he has apparently taken a big step forward in the plate discipline department. Shaw spend most of the 2018 campaign with Sacramento, hitting .259/.308/.505 with 24 homers and 65 RBI in 101 games for the River Cats. He opened the 2019 season back at Double-A Richmond, where he hit .288/.368/.500 with seven homers and 24 RBI in 45 games before earning a promotion back to Triple-A. Should he continue to succeed at the highest level of the minors, Shaw could get another shot with the big-league club sometime this summer; he struggled in his first taste of the majors last season, hitting .185/.274/.278 in 22 games.

It was assumed when Shaw was optioned in mid-March that Triple-A Sacramento would be his destination, as he spent the bulk of the last two seasons at that level and hadn't played at Double-A since 2017. There's no immediate apparent reason why he'd be demoted one extra level, but this likely doesn't change his timeline for returning to the big leagues, as the Giants could easily call him up straight from Double-A should they decide he's ready to go.
