  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Nearing rehab assignment

Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Tuesday that Mountcastle (wrist) is expected to begin a rehab assignment by the end of the week and could return from the 10-day injured list before the end of the regular season, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.

The 27-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 22 due to a sprained left wrist, but he's on the cusp of returning to game action. The Orioles begin their final road trip of the regular season next Tuesday against the Yankees, and Mountcastle should rejoin the big club at some point during that six-game stretch after getting some at-bats in the minors.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Uncertain timeline for return

Manager Brandon Hyde relayed Monday that he wasn't sure when Mountcastle (wrist) would return from the 10-day injured list, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Mountcastle sprained his left wrist Aug. 22 against Houston while sliding into second base. He was placed on the 10-day injured list four days later, but it wasn't until Friday that he started swinging a bat by hitting off a tee. The Orioles are in a tight race in the AL East with the Yankees, but they have a comfortable lead in the AL Wild Card, so there could be caution in bringing Mountcastle back into the fold to avoid aggravating his wrist injury. From the end of the All-Star break to his placement on the IL, Mountcastle had a slash line of .259/.296/.370 with one home run and 18 RBI across 115 plate appearances.

Mountcastle (wrist) has yet to resume swinging a bat, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde admitted Monday that while Mountcastle's sprained left wrist is feeling better, he has "no idea" regarding a potential timetable for the first baseman's return. Mountcastle initially suffered the injury Aug. 22 before landing on the 10-day injured list Aug. 26. Ryan O'Hearn and Emmanuel Rivera have been handling first base with Mountcastle out.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Goes on IL with sprained wrist

The Orioles placed Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list Monday with a sprained left wrist, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Mountcastle initially suffered the injury while sliding into second base during last Thursday's game against the Astros and did not recover quickly enough to avoid a stint on the IL. He will be eligible to return Sept. 2, although it's unclear at this point whether he has a chance for activation on that date. Ryan O'Hearn should see most of the action at first base while Mountcastle is sidelined, with Eloy Jimenez picking up some playing time at designated hitter.
