  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Outrighted to Triple-A

Acevedo cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas by the Athletics on Tuesday. He's no longer part of the 40-man roster but will remain in the organization. Acevedo was effective for the A's last season but holds a 10.61 ERA in nine appearances in 2023.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Designated for assignment

Acevedo was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. This is part of a line change in the Oakland bullpen, with Rico Garcia, Austin Pruitt and Spencer Patton all getting the call from Triple-A Las Vegas. Acevedo had struggled to a 10.61 ERA and 1.93 WHIP through 9.1 innings of relief this season for the A's.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Put right to work Thursday

Acevedo (back), activated from the injured list earlier in the day, allowed an earned run on two hits over 1.2 innings in a loss to the Angels on Thursday. He struck out two. Manager Mark Kotsay offered Acevedo anything but a soft landing when he called on the right-hander to handle a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning. Acevedo allowed just one inherited runner to score on a fielder's choice and then surrendered an Anthony Rendon RBI double in the sixth, but he also recorded swinging strikeouts of Mike Trout and Hunter Renfroe during the frame. Given he handled a 25-pitch workload relatively effectively, it would seem Acevedo is ready to jump back into his usual high-volume role.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Activated from injured list

Acevedo was activated from the 15-day injured list by the Athletics on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Acevedo missed a couple weeks of action with a lower-back strain. He struggled before getting injured and also during his rehab assignment, so the A's might ease him back into high-leverage spots.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Throws bullpen Tuesday

Acevedo (back) threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas before the end of the week, the Associated Press reports. The veteran reliever went on the injured list with a lower-back strain back last Wednesday, so it's certainly a positive that he's already able to throw without issue. Given his relief role and the fact he's been sidelined for a short period, Acevedo is a likely candidate for a brief rehab assignment.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Placed on IL with back strain

The Athletics placed Acevedo on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a left lower-back strain. Oakland recalled Chad Smith from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move to take Acevedo's spot in the bullpen. The right-hander will be out for at least two weeks while he recovers with a chance to join the Oakland relief corps before the end of April if he avoids any setbacks.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Unblemished ERA in spring

Acevedo has yet to give up a run over 4.2 innings in four Cactus League appearances, allowing two hits and three walks while recording five strikeouts. The right-hander has been a reliable relief option over his first two big-league seasons, posting a 4-4 record, 3.32 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, four saves and 21 holds across 78.2 innings (80 appearances). Acevedo currently profiles as a high-leverage option for a team with an unsettled closer picture, and with the exception of some modest control issues thus far this spring, his Cactus League body of work seems to support the notion he's up for the task.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Charged with blown save

Acevedo allowed an unearned run on two hits over one inning to take a blown save in Tuesday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Angels. Acevedo gave up an RBI single to Matt Duffy in the ninth inning that tied the game at 1-1. This was Acevedo's first blown save since taking over the Athletics' closer job in mid-September. The 28-year-old owns a 3.33 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 58:17 K:BB through 67.2 innings this year while adding four saves, four blown saves and 21 holds through 70 appearances.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Earns extra-inning win

Acevedo (4-4) earned the extra-inning win with one scoreless inning against the Angels on Monday. He did not allow a hit and walked one with one strikeout. After Seth Brown tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run single in the ninth inning, Acevedo entered the game and retired the side in the 10th inning. The Athletics then walked off on an infield single, giving Acevedo his fourth win. Acevedo has been effective out of the back end of the bullpen recently with four saves and one win over 5.1 innings in seven outings since Sept. 14.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Gives up decisive homer

Acevedo (3-4) took the loss Friday versus the Mariners. He allowed a solo home run and struck out two in two-thirds of an inning. Acevedo tried to keep the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Cal Raleigh knocked a pinch-hit, walkoff home run to send the Athletics to the loss. Acevedo became the Athletics' primary closer earlier in September, but he saw a 5.2-inning scoreless streak end Friday. He has a 3.43 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 57:16 K:BB through 65.2 innings while adding four saves and 21 holds this year.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Nails down save

Acevedo picked up the save in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Mariners. He allowed zero runs on one hit and zero walks while striking out one over one inning. Acevedo allowed an infield single to Julio Rodriguez to lead off the ninth but quickly escaped any damage thanks to a double-play ball in the following at-bat. The 6-foot-7 reliever then struck out Mitch Haniger swinging to end the game and record his fourth save of the season. That makes six straight scoreless appearances for Acevedo, who has not allowed a run since Sept 2. Over that 5.1-inning stretch, he's registered six strikeouts to no walks while allowing four hits.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Secures third save

Acevedo saved Tuesday's 4-1 win against the Mariners, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning. Acevedo faced the heart of Seattle's lineup in the ninth inning and retired the side in order on 10 pitches to notch his third consecutive appearance with a save. Manager Mark Kotsay appears to be going with the hot-hand approach at the back end of his bullpen with Acevedo the current favorite thanks to five straight scoreless appearances. The 28-year-old possesses a 3.39 ERA and 0.97 WHIP with 54 strikeouts in 63.2 innings across 65 appearances.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Possible waiver wire pickups

When Dany Jimenez hit the IL and Zach Jackson soon followed, it seemed like A.J. Puk would be next in line for saves in Oakland. But now we know the Athletics had someone else in mind. Acevedo has handled each of their past two chances, one coming Wednesday and the other Saturday. The second-year pitcher doesn't have the sort of strikeout rate you'd expect to see from a closer, but his 15.3 percent swinging-strike rate suggests he has untapped potential in the regard. He also doesn't beat himself with walks. If you're hurting for saves in a league where other low-end sources like Peter Fairbanks and Jose Leclerc have already been scooped up, here's another possibility.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Gets second save Saturday

Acevedo recorded his second save in a win over the Astros on Saturday, allowing one hit over a scoreless ninth inning. A.J. Puk worked the eighth inning and garnered his 18th hold despite an uneven performance, leaving Acevedo to work the final frame. The right-hander fired in all 11 pitches for strikes, settling down after allowing a leadoff single to Trey Mancini to induce a fielder's choice from Chas McCormick and a game-ending double play from Christian Vazquez. Acevedo has now generated four straight scoreless appearance after a stumble against the Orioles on Sept. 2, and both of his saves have come in the last two trips to the mound.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Notches first save

Acevedo earned a save against the Rangers on Wednesday, retiring the only batter he faced via strikeout. A two-run top of the ninth inning gave Oakland a lead, and manager Mark Kotsay turned to southpaw Sam Moll for the bottom of the frame. Moll notched two outs before walking Adolis Garcia, and Acevedo was brought in to record the final out. He threw a wild pitch to allow Garcia to reach second but finished off the contest with a strikeout for his first career save. A.J. Puk -- who has been getting most of the save opportunities of late -- may not have been available after tossing two innings Tuesday, so it's probably premature to assume that Acevedo has moved into the lead ninth-inning role despite the successful outing Wednesday.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Takes third loss

Acevedo (3-3) took the loss against the Orioles on Friday, allowing three earned runs on two hits and three walks over one-third of an inning. Tasked with preserving a 2-2 tie when he entered in the bottom of the eighth, the right-hander uncharacteristically faltered. Acevedo allowed three of the first four men he faced to reach -- one via intentional walk -- before issuing a bases-loaded free pass to Adley Rutschman and conceding a two-run single to Jorge Mateo. It was Acevedo's second appearance with three runs allowed since Aug. 23, but this type of hiccup is still mostly rare for the 28-year-old -- he's otherwise generated scoreless efforts in 10 of his other 11 outings since the beginning of August.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Up to 19 holds

Acevedo recorded his 19th hold in a win over the Mariners on Sunday, firing a scoreless sixth inning during which he recorded a strikeout. The right-hander mustered his fourth straight scoreless appearance and seventh in his last eight trips to the mound overall. Acevedo's ERA has plummeted from 3.26 back down to 2.93 over the latter stretch, which, when combined with his three victories and 19 holds, keeps him very viable in both AL-only and mixed leagues with formats that value relievers.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Gets third win Saturday

Acevedo (3-2) secured the win in a victory over the Rangers on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits over 1.1 innings. He struck out one. Acevedo was called on for the second straight day in a tight game, and the veteran right-hander was able to deliver once again. While he wasn't anywhere near as sharp as during a Friday outing during which he was just one pitch away from an immaculate inning, Acevedo still was able to induce an inning-ending double play from Charlie Culberson with the bases loaded when he entered the game in the sixth inning. Acevedo did subsequently allow a seventh-inning RBI double to Marcus Semien, but that was the first time he'd been scored upon since July 6.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Gets second win

Acevedo (2-2) recorded the win in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Tigers on Thursday, firing a perfect sixth inning during which he recorded two strikeouts. Acevedo nearly walked away with an impeccable inning, as he needed just one pitch over the minimum nine to get his three outs and pounded eight of his offerings in for strikes. The razor-sharp showing was the latest in an extended stretch of strong pitching for Acevedo, who now boasts two wins, a 0.63 ERA, a 0.63 WHIP and a 10.7 K/9 across the 14.1 innings covering his last 14 appearances.

  • Athletics' Domingo Acevedo: Secures 12th hold Saturday

Acevedo recorded his 12th hold in a win over the Astros on Saturday, firing a scoreless seventh inning during which he recorded a strikeout. The right-hander fired all eight pitches he threw in his ultra-efficient frame for strikes, underscoring how locked in he was. Acevedo has now generated scoreless efforts in nine of his last 10 trips to the mound, posting a 1-1 record, six holds, an 0.87 ERA and an 0.68 WHIP across that sample of 10.1 innings.
