  • Ryan McBroom: Pursuing work in Asia

The Royals granted McBroom his unconditional release Monday.

McBroom was a candidate to be removed from the Royals' 40-man roster this offseason, and rather than waiting for the organization to make a decision on his status, the 29-year-old is apparently intent on exploring playing opportunities in Asia. He's spent parts of the last three seasons in the majors, accruing a .268/.322/.427 slash line (99 wRC+) in 177 plate appearances.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Sent back to Triple-A

McBroom was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.

McBroom's latest MLB stint lasted just two days. He appeared off the bench twice, going 1-for-2 with a strikeout. The Royals will make a corresponding move Friday to fill his place on the roster.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Recalled by Royals

McBroom was recalled by the Royals on Tuesday.

McBroom has appeared in just five big-league games this season, all of which came back in April. His latest stint on the big-league roster may turn out to be a brief one, as both Danny Duffy (forearm) and Brady Singer (shoulder) landed on the injured list in a corresponding move. The Royals don't need to replace that pair with more starting pitchers right away, but they'll need to within a few days, and it's possible McBroom is the one to make way.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Optioned to alternate camp

McBroom was optioned to the Royals' alternate training site Saturday.

McBroom has appeared in five games to begin the season and went 1-for-6 with a run and five strikeouts during that time. He'll now head back to the team's alternate camp after left-hander Kris Bubic was recalled by the Royals in a corresponding move.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Back in majors

McBroom was recalled from the Royals' alternate training site Tuesday.

Kansas City will bolster its bench in the short term, with reliever Jake Newberry getting sent down in a corresponding move. McBroom will likely see action primarily as a right-handed hitter off the bench.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Sent to alternate training site

McBroom was optioned to Kansas City's alternate training site Tuesday.

The 29-year-old made only three appearances through the first eight games of the season, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, a walk and a run. McBroom could rejoin the Royals later in the season when they need extra bench depth.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Part of Opening Day roster

McBroom went 13-for-48 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 23 Cactus League games this spring.

McBroom's spring performance was enough to earn him a spot on the Royals' Opening Day roster. With Ryan O'Hearn optioned to the Royals' alternate training site Tuesday, McBroom will serve as the backup first baseman to Carlos Santana. In addition to first base, there may be some occasional starts for him as the designated hitter or in the outfield.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Called up by Royals

McBroom was recalled by the Royals on Friday.

McBroom spent just under two weeks at the Royals' alternate training site, but he'll return to the active roster for the final three games of the regular season. He isn't starting Friday's series opener against the Tigers but will be available as outfield depth to finish the season.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Optioned to alternate site

McBroom was optioned to the Royals' alternate training site Saturday.

It's something of a surprising move, as McBroom owns a solid .784 OPS on the season, the product of a .253/.291/.493 slash line. He'd been really struggling at the plate recently, however, going 1-for-20 over his last 10 games.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Delivers pinch-hit homer

McBroom hit a solo home run during his only at-bat in Wednesday's loss to the Cardinals.

McBroom came in to pinch hit for Cam Gallagher in the eighth inning and belted a solo shot off Genesis Cabrera. It was the second pinch-hit home run of the season for the 28-year-old, who is batting .302/.339/.585 with eight RBI and six runs scored across 22 games.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Solo homer as cleanup hitter

McBroom went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 3-2 win over the Twins.

McBroom was up in the cleanup spot against a lefty (Devin Smeltzer). While he went hitless against Smeltzer, McBroom homered off righty Matt Wisler in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie, his second homer of the season. McBroom has started three of the Royals' last four games with Franchy Cordero (wrist) sidelined, but he still projects for a short-side platoon role when the team is closer to full strength.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Sitting out Sunday

McBroom is out of the lineup Sunday against the White Sox.

McBroom had started three of the Royals' last four games, but he may be largely limited to a short-side platoon moving forward after Ryan O'Hearn returned from the COVID-19 injured list Monday. Both O'Hearn and McBroom will be excluded from the lineup for the series finale, however, as Salvador Perez picks up a start at first base while Jorge Soler serves as the Royals' designated hitter.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Mashes first homer

McBroom went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox.

Getting the start with left-hander Dallas Keuchel on the mound for Chicago, McBroom took the veteran hurler deep in the sixth inning for his first homer of the year. With Ryan O'Hearn now healthy, McBroom is stuck on the short side of a platoon at first base, but if one or the other of them get hot a full-time starting job is there for the taking.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Top option to replace O'Hearn

McBroom is expected to open the season as the Royals' primary first baseman in the event Ryan O'Hearn (illness) isn't ready to return from the COVID-19 injured list, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

O'Hearn remains in self-isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus and will need to submit two negative test results before he's cleared to rejoin the Royals for workouts. With Opening Day just over a week away, O'Hearn may not have enough time to get himself ready for game action even if he rejoins the Royals in a few days, leaving McBroom as the next man up at first base. McBroom solidified his case for being O'Hearn's main replacement during Tuesday's intrasquad game, slugging a two-run home run off Jakob Junis.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Heading for platoon at first base?

Manager Mike Matheny said March 6 that McBroom and Ryan O'Hearn could begin the season in a "soft platoon" at first base, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

McBroom made his major-league debut last season and had a .293/.361/.360 slash line with five doubles in 23 games, and he showed well before spring training was suspended with a 1.026 OPS. O'Hearn struggled heavily in 2019 with a .195/.281/.369 line, but he also performed well in spring action. O'Hearn would have the clear advantage for playing time as the left-handed bat, but the potential platoon illustrates McBroom's likely roster security for the eventual start of the season.

  • Royals' Ryan McBroom: Three-hit night

McBroom went 3-for-4 in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Twins.

All three of McBroom's hits were single, and he wasn't able to factor into the run production. He's hit safely in seven of his last eight games, going 10-for-28 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored in that span. He's gotten on base well (.357 on base percentage) but the 27-year-old only has a .385 slugging percentage in 56 plate appearances. He did show power with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hitting 26 homers in 117 games while with the Yankees' farm team.
