  • Luis Urias: Becomes free agent

Urias elected free agency Friday. He cleared waivers after being removed from the Mariners' 40-man roster and has decided not to accept an outright assignment to the minors. Urias, 27, managed just a .191/.303/.394 slash line in 41 games with Seattle this season.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Draws rare start Sunday

Urias drew his first start since Sept. 4 in Sunday's win over the Rangers and went 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a run. Urias was making his first appearance of any kind since that game, one in which he'd rapped out three extra-base hits and knocked in four runs. Despite that stellar performance, Urias had not been able to crack the starting nine again with Josh Rojas healthy and getting regular run at the hot corner. Urias limped to a .152 average and .580 OPS across his first 35 games at the big-league level this season before being demoted to Triple-A Tacoma, but he'd earned a call back up by posting a strong .260 average and .789 OPS across 78 games with the Rainiers.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Huge performance in win

Urias went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored while also drawing a walk in Wednesday's win over the Athletics. Urias brought home Mitch Garver with an RBI double in the top of the fourth before coming around to score himself on a Dylan Moore single as the Mariners took a 5-1 lead. The infielder then added a leadoff homer in the seventh to extend the lead, followed by another RBI double in the eighth, giving him his first three-hit performance of the campaign, as well as his first hits since being promoted to the majors last week. Urias' four RBI on the night also marked a season high.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Promoted from Tacoma

The Mariners selected Urias' contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Urias has been swinging a hot bat at Tacoma recently, slashing .333/.434/.578 with three homers, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored over 53 plate appearances across his last 12 games. His uptick in production has now been rewarded with a spot on the active roster, though he will have to compete for playing time at third base with Josh Rojas. In corresponding moves, Gabe Speier was optioned to Triple-A, and Terrin Vavra was designated for assignment.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Swinging blistering bat in Tacoma

Urias, who was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on May 24, sports a .382 average and 1.093 OPS across 40 plate appearances over his last nine games. Urias has been a mainstay for the Triple-A club since his demotion, but his current stretch, which includes two doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, five walks, a stolen base and 11 runs, has easily been his best yet while down on the farm. The hot hitting also bears zero resemblance to Urias' performance with the big-league club earlier this season, for which he limped to a .152/.264/.316 slash line across 34 games. Urias exclusively played third base while with the Mariners but has plenty of big-league experience at second base and shortstop. If new Mariners manager Dan Wilson wants to see what the veteran might be able to offer down the stretch, Urias will have to regain a spot on the 40-man roster after being removed from it back on June 4.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Removed from 40-man roster

The Mariners removed Urias from the 40-man roster and outrighted him to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday. The 27-year-old was optioned to Tacoma in late May and has now lost his place on the 40-man roster to make room for the signing of Victor Robles. Urias struggled in 34 games for the Mariners, posting a .152/.264/.316 slash line and 34.1 percent strikeout rate in 91 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Optioned down Friday

Urias was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday. With Seattle deciding to bring back outfielder Jonatan Clase, Urias will lose his spot in the majors. The 26-year-old third baseman has a slash line of .152/.264/.316 with 12 RBI on the season.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Gets another start Wednesday

Urias will start at third base and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Yankees. Urias will stick in the lineup for the seventh time in eight games, but most of his playing time came while infielders J.P. Crawford (oblique) and Jorge Polanco (hamstring) were both out with injuries. Crawford and Polanco are both starting Wednesday, but the Mariners will have room in the lineup for Urias with the left-handed-hitting Josh Rojas hitting the bench against Yankees southpaw Nestor Cortes. Assuming both Crawford and Polanco are in the clear to handle everyday roles moving forward, Urias looks like he'll be relegated to the short side of a platoon with Rojas.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Another productive day Sunday

Urias went 1-for-3 with two RBI from a bases-loaded walk and a run-scoring single in a win over the Astros on Sunday. Both of Urias' RBI were particularly noteworthy, as he displayed some timely plate discipline with the bases jammed in the second inning and then drove in the game-tying run with an eighth-inning single that plated Dylan Moore. Urias' .738 OPS belies some of his struggles at the plate, as he's still carrying a .167 average and .286 on-base percentage; however, he's also contributed 10 RBI in 20 games, the byproduct of a .444 average in 14 plate appearances with men in scoring position.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Lifts third homer in win

Urias went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a win over the Astros on Saturday. Urias gave the Mariners a bit of breathing room with a 420-foot shot to center in the fifth, extending Seattle's lead to 3-0 at the time. The offseason addition has now matched the three-homer total he mustered across 52 games in 2023 while logging time with the Brewers and Red Sox, but he's still carrying a worrisome .154 average and .267 on-base percentage. However, the lopsided slash line also includes a career-best .462 slugging percentage, as all six of Urias' hits this season have gone for extra bases (three doubles, three homers).

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Belts second homer Thursday

Urias went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in a win over the Rangers on Thursday. The offseason addition made some noise from the bottom of the order, snapping a 2-2 tie via a 398-foot fifth-inning shot to left center off Andrew Heaney. Urias last left the park back on April 6, and despite the timely long ball Thursday, he's sitting on a .179 batting average and .303 OBP across 33 plate appearances. However, he's also carrying a .500 slugging percentage, thanks to the fact that all five of his hits have gone for extra bases (three doubles, two homers).

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Returns to lineup

Urias (wrist) will start at third base and bat eighth in Thursday's game against the Rangers. Urias will make his first start since he exited the second game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Rockies when he was hit by a pitch on the right wrist. The Mariners faced right-handed starting pitchers in both of the ensuing two games, so Urias' absence from the lineup for those contests might have had more to do with his status as a short-side platoon player than because of the injury. Urias will face off against Rangers southpaw Andrew Heaney on Thursday.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Exits early versus Rockies

Urias left Sunday night's matchup with the Rockies after he suffered a right wrist contusion, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Urias was hit by sinker from Peter Lambert in the top of the second inning, exiting the contest in the bottom of the frame. Josh Rojas replaced him at third base and an update on Urias will likely be provided following the game.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Laces timely double Saturday

Urias went 1-for-2 with an RBI double in a loss to the Cubs on Saturday. The offseason addition opened the game at third base and was able to contribute the only run of the game for the Mariners with his second-inning two-bagger that knotted the score at 1-1. His success Saturday notwithstanding, Urias is still scuffling overall with a .174 average and .296 on-base percentage; however, he also carries a .435 slugging percentage thanks to all four of his knocks to date having gone for extra bases.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Breaks out of funk Wednesday

Urias went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk in a loss to the Guardians on Wednesday. The modestly successful day at the plate, which came in Urias' third start, snapped the infielder out of a season-opening 0-for-8 slump. The 26-year-old has split time at the hot corner with Josh Rojas thus far, and perhaps Wednesday's performance will help ignite his bat after he also cooled off over the latter portion of spring training following a hot start to Cactus League play.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Sitting Saturday vs. Boston

Urias is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Red Sox. Urias has struggled in his first two starts of the season, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Josh Rojas will start at third base and bat ninth Saturday against Red Sox right-hander Kutter Crawford.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Continues strong spring Thursday

Urias went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a Cactus League win over the Brewers on Thursday. Urias's sixth-inning solo shot off potential Milwaukee closer Joel Payamps pushed Seattle's lead to 4-1 and served as his second homer of spring. The offseason addition has overcome some early adversity stemming from a shoulder injury, playing third base with regularity and putting together a .333 batting average with a double, a triple, the pair of round trippers and four RBI across nine exhibitions.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Plays three innings on defense

Urias made his spring debut on defense in the Mariners' Cactus League loss to the Rangers on Tuesday, going 0-for-1 and playing three innings. Urias' ability to play the field was an important step, considering he's been dealing with right shoulder soreness and had therefore been limited to designated hitter duties over his first three spring appearances. Now that he's been able to get on the diamond, the next step for the 26-year-old is to get his bat going -- he's just 1-for-6 with an RBI over his first four Cactus League contests.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Throwing in infield drills

Urias (shoulder) will do some throwing in infield drills Friday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. He will still be somewhat limited, but it's a step forward as he works his way back from right shoulder inflammation. Urias is still serving as a designated hitter in Cactus League games -- he went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run against the White Sox in that capacity Thursday -- but he will probably require an injured list stint if he's not able to play the field by Opening Day.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Could need IL stint

Urias (shoulder) could require a stint on the injured list to begin the season, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. Urias is currently limited to light tossing from about 70 feet as he works his way back from right shoulder inflammation, suggesting that he's probably not close to being cleared to play third base in a game. Divish also writes that Urias showed up to camp "in less-than-stellar shape" following a poor showing in the Mexican Pacific Winter League. The plan has been to platoon Urias and Josh Rojas at third base, but if Urias isn't ready, Dylan Moore and/or Sam Haggerty could be used some at the hot corner. Seattle also recently signed Brian Anderson as a non-roster invitee, a move that may or may not have been directly related to Urias' situation.
