Player Outlook
Cedric Mullins' .738 OPS through 91 games with Baltimore last season would have been his best since 2021, but he never got on track after being dealt to the Mets and had a .182/.284/.281 slash line in 42 games for New York. He still totaled 17 homers, 59 RBI and 58 runs scored -- which was a reasonable projection for him at the start of the year -- though his 22 steals dropped by 10 from 2024. The allure of Mullins' 30-30 campaign in 2021 is a distant memory, but he's still averaged nearly 17 long balls and 27 stolen bases across the past four seasons. However, he's batting just .228 the last three years and is trending in the wrong direction heading into his age-31 season. Poor hard-hit (35.9 percent) and barrel rates (6.2 percent) don't provide much optimism about him providing more consistency at the plate in 2026. Mullins inked a one-year deal with the Rays and is likely to start out in a strong-side platoon role, which should be enough volume for him to provide some fantasy upside in the power and speed departments.

  • Rays' Cedric Mullins: On track to play Tuesday

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday that Mullins (back) will return to the Grapefruit League lineup Tuesday against the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Mullins hasn't played since last Tuesday while managing a sore back, but the Rays never viewed the injury as a long-term concern. He should have plenty of time to pick up at-bats during spring training in advance of Opening Day. The 31-year-old appears likely to open the season in the strong side of a platoon in center field.

  • Rays' Cedric Mullins: Resumes on-field work

Rays manager Kevin Cash said that Mullins is "doing better" in his recovery from back tightness and will take part in an on-field workout Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Mullins last played Tuesday before succumbing to the back injury, but the veteran outfielder looks to be making good progress and is being viewed as day-to-day. Assuming he's able to move past the back issue and play in at least a few more games before the end of the Grapefruit League slate, Mullins should be in good position to begin the season in the strong side of a platoon in center field.

  • Rays' Cedric Mullins: Expected to be out multiple days

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Thursday that Mullins (back) is feeling better but is "probably not going to play for a little bit," Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Mullins had to be scratched from Wednesday's Grapefruit League lineup with lower-back tightness. The veteran outfielder's Opening Day availability does not seem to be in danger at this point, but the Rays will be cautious. Mullins is slated to be Tampa Bay's primary center fielder against right-handed pitching this season.

  • Rays' Cedric Mullins: Scratched with lower-back tightness

Mullins was scratched from Wednesday's lineup versus Team Netherlands due to lower-back tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Consider Mullins -- who is 3-for-10 with one home run and a 2:1 BB:K this spring -- day-to-day for the time being. Jacob Melton entered the Rays' lineup in center field in Mullins' place.

  • Rays' Cedric Mullins: Swats first spring long ball

Mullins went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI in Friday's Grapefruit League game against Toronto. It was the first homer of spring training for Mullins, who is trying to bounce back with the Rays in 2026 after he fell to a .690 OPS covering 498 regular-season plate appearances last season. With Josh Lowe having been dealt to the Angels over the winter, Mullins should open the season as Tampa Bay's primary center fielder.

  • Rays' Cedric Mullins: Inks one-year pact with Rays

Mullins signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Rays on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. 2025 marked one of Mullins' worst seasons at the plate in the majors, as he finished the year with a .216/.299/.391 batting line over 498 plate appearances alongside 17 homers, 59 RBI, 58 runs scored and 22 steals. With fellow lefty-hitting outfielders Chandler Simpson, Jake Fraley and Josh Lowe already in Tampa Bay, so Mullins may need to improve upon his 2025 numbers to maintain a regular spot in the lineup.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Sitting Saturday

Mullins is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins. Mullins has been used in a strong-side platoon role in center field, but he's starting to lose playing time. Mullins has now been held out of the starting nine for two of the Mets' last three games against right-handers, and he's started just one of the team's last five contests. Tyrone Taylor will patrol center field Friday. Mullins is slashing .111/.222/.167 in his last 21 games.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Sitting out against righty

Mullins is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Cubs. Right-hander Cade Horton is toeing the rubber for the Cubs, but the left-handed-hitting Mullins will begin the festivities on the bench. Mullins is slashing just .188/.287/.291 in 40 games since joining the Mets. Brandon Nimmo is getting his first start of the season in center field, while Starling Marte will patrol left field.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Sitting Friday

Mullins is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Washington. The Nationals haven't formally announced their starting pitcher Friday, but it's expected to be southpaw Andrew Alvarez. Regardless, the lefty-hitting Mullins will take a seat, as Jose Siri roams center field. In his last seven games, Mullins is 5-for-18 (.278).

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Out against lefty again

Mullins is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. The left-handed-hitting Mullins will stay on the bench for the second game in a row while the Mets go up against another Phillies southpaw (Cristopher Sanchez). Jose Siri will cover center field in Mullins' stead.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Sitting in series finale

Mullins is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. Mullins had started in each of the Mets' last four games, but he went 0-for-14 with three walks to bring his slash line down to .188/.297/.294 since he was acquired from the Orioles on July 31. Though Mullins still appears to be the Mets' preferred option in center field, his grasp on the job could be slipping a bit in light of his ongoing skid at the plate.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Sitting again Friday

Mullins is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Marlins. Mullins finds himself on the bench Friday for the second time in the past three games, all of which have come against right-handed starting pitchers. The center fielder had been operating as a strong-side platoon player, but it appears his .695 OPS through 21 games with the Mets has begun to affect his playing time. Tyrone Taylor is receiving another start in center field for New York.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Idle against right-hander

Mullins is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. The Mets are going up against a right-hander (Taijuan Walker) for the series finale, but the left-handed-hitting Mullins will nonetheless remain on the bench after he was held out of the lineup against lefty starters Monday and Tuesday. Jeff McNeil will get the nod in center field in place of Mullins.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Taking seat against lefty

Mullins is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. The left-handed-hitting Mullins has been playing fairly regularly against southpaws since the Mets acquired him from the Orioles on July 31, but he'll take a seat Monday while the Phillies send lefty Cristopher Sanchez to the hill. With Mullins on the bench, New York will roll out a starting outfield of Brandon Nimmo, Tyrone Taylor and Juan Soto from left to right.

The 30-year-old has now hit safely in six of his last seven games, posting three extra-base hits, two RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases in that span. Since joining New York on Aug. 1, he's slashing .242/.338/.379 with one homer, six RBI, 10 runs scored and five steals across 77 plate appearances.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Resting Saturday

Mullins is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta. Despite Atlanta sending right-hander Cal Quantrill to the hill, Mullins will get the night off Saturday, yielding his spot in center field to Tyrone Taylor. Mullins had started 14 consecutive games, going 14-for-51 (.275) with four doubles, a triple and a home run during that stretch.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Homer short of cycle Friday

Mullins went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple, a run scored and two RBI in Friday's win over Atlanta. It took him a few games to get adjusted to his new team after being traded by the Orioles at the deadline, but Mullins is finding his groove with the Mets. The center fielder has hit safely in five straight games, and over his last 12 contests he's slashing .304/.353/.500 with six extra-base hits (four double, a triple and a homer), one steal, six runs and six RBI.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Nabs 17th steal

Mullins went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's win over the Nationals. The veteran center fielder collected his third steal in 15 games as a member of the Mets, and his 17th of the season overall. Mullins is still adjusting to his new environment after being acquired from the Orioles at the trade deadline, slashing .173/.254/.288 for New York over 59 plate appearances with a 28.8 percent strikeout rate.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Sitting versus southpaw

Mullins is not in the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Guardians. The left-handed-hitting Mullins started against a southpaw Sunday, but he'll take a seat Tuesday as the Guardians send lefty Logan Allen to the bump. Tyrone Taylor will hold down center field and bat ninth for the Mets.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Traded to Mets

The Orioles traded Mullins to the Mets on Thursday in exchange for Raimon Gomez, Anthony Nunez and Chandler Marsh, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Mullins owns a .738 OPS on the season but has been on fire since the start of July, slashing .290/.346/.522 with three homers, 10 RBI, nine runs scored and six stolen bases over his last 23 games. The 30-year-old will presumably take over as the Mets' primary center fielder, which likely spells more starts at the keystone for Jeff McNeil.
