• Twins' Chris Paddack: Roughed up in 2025 debut

  Paddack (0-1) took the loss Monday against the White Sox. He allowed nine runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two across 3.1 innings. Paddack's got off to a rough start Monday when he gave up a three-run home run to Andrew Vaughn in the first inning. Paddack proceeded to allow long shots to Andrew Benintendi and Michael Taylor and failed to get out of the fourth frame while tossing 89 pitches (54 strikes). Paddack earned a spot in the Twins' rotation after posting a 4.58 ERA and 21:4 K:BB across 17.2 spring innings, but Monday certainly wasn't an ideal beginning to the 2025 campaign for the 29-year-old right-hander. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which is tentatively slated for this weekend at home against the Astros.

  Paddack will begin the season in the Minnesota rotation with David Festa and Zebby Matthews optioned to Triple-A, Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports. Paddack showed he was healthy in his last start after suffering a head contusion when a liner deflected off his glove in his previous outing. Paddack, who didn't pitch in the majors after July last year due to a forearm strain, showed he's back to full strength this spring even if his numbers are not overly impressive. He has a 5.59 ERA with nine strikeouts and no walks over 9.2 innings this spring.

Paddack was pitching well before he left and was able to leave under his own power. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts prior to exiting. The right-hander is seen as the leading candidates for the No. 4 starter role but is having an uneven spring (three strikeouts and two homers allowed in 5.2 total innings).

  Paddack, who didn't pitch in the majors after July due to a forearm strain, enters spring training healthy and is seen as a part of the starting rotation as camp begins, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. "It's the first offseason he hasn't gone down to zero and then built himself back up," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. "I think this could be a really good thing for him." Paddack could have returned during the last week of the regular season, but the Twins didn't activate him from the injured list while out of the playoff race. The right-hander continued to throw all offseason and has been working on a bullet slider to add to his arsenal. It was thought Paddack and his $7.5 million salary for 2025 could be traded in the offseason as the Twins faced budget pressure, but he looks set to remain in Minnesota. He'll face competition for a rotation spot from promising younger pitchers David Festa and Zebby Matthews, but it looks like he's penciled into the rotation to begin spring. Still, Paddack will need to perform well and stay healthy to secure his positioning.

Paddack noted after Friday's session that his goal is to return for the start of the postseason if the Twins are able to make it. He has a 5-3 record across 17 starts this season with a 4.99 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 79:21 K:BB across 88.1 innings.

  The Twins transferred Paddack (forearm) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. The transaction clears space on the 40-man roster for right-hander Diego Castillo, whose contract was selected from Triple-A St. Paul ahead of Sunday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. Paddack was initially placed on the IL on July 20 with a right forearm strain and wasn't counting on returning until late September in a best-case scenario, so the move to the 60-day IL won't affect his recovery timeline. Per MLB.com, Paddack resumed playing catch from 60 feet last week, but he still has several milestones to hit in the rehab process before his return to the active roster can be considered imminent.

  Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said Friday that Paddack (forearm) could begin a throwing program soon, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Paddack has been out since July 14 due to a right forearm strain. It's going to take him a little while to get built back up, so a return before the end of August doesn't seem likely. However, Falvey expressed optimism that Paddack would be able to rejoin the Twins' rotation before the end of the season.

  Paddack allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters in a no-decision against the White Sox on Monday. Paddack was activated from the injured list ahead of the contest after missing over two weeks due to arm fatigue. The right-hander didn't seem to have any trouble with the issue in his return, tossing 78 pitches (54 for strikes) and allowing just five baserunners. Paddack did fade a bit near the end of the outing, though, as three of those baserunners reached in his final frame of work. Assuming he came out of the start fine, Paddack is in line to make his next start in San Francisco this weekend.

  Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said Friday that Paddack (arm) is doing well in his rehab program and is expected to return from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's series opener against the White Sox, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Paddack landed on the IL on June 25 due to right forearm fatigue, a possible side effect of the 28-year-old pitching in a full season for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2022. After responding well to his recent throwing sessions, Paddack looks like he'll be ready to come off the IL without having made a rehab start before hand. If he does make it back Monday, he'll face a White Sox team that ranks 29th this season in both batting average (.221) and OPS (.632).

However, the right-hander loaded the bases without retiring a batter in the fifth, and all three of those runners came around to score following his departure to further mar his final stat line. The four innings tied a season-low total for Paddack, matching the amount he completed in his season debut against Milwaukee on April 3. If there's a silver lining, it's that Paddack managed to punch out seven batters, his highest mark over his past five starts.

Overall, he's 4-2 on the season with a 4.57 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 54:12 K:BB across 61 innings. Paddack's currently in line for a tough road matchup with the Yankees in his next start.

Manager Rocco Baldelli had Paddack on a short hook and lifted the right-hander after 73 pitches, after the right-hander gave up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, including a solo homer off the bat of Ezequiel Duran in the fifth. Paddack had a nine-run blowup against the Orioles back on April 16, but overall he's putting together a highly successful comeback season after missing the better part of two years following Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts and now has a 3.05 ERA in seven starts since that aforementioned disaster outing in Baltimore.

Paddack couldn't get much by the Yankees on Tuesday, tying his career high in hits allowed while all nine NYY batters generated a hit. The poor showing was a surprise considering Paddack was victorious in his previous four starts -- allowing five runs across 23.1 innings with two 10-strikeout games. Paddack has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his eight starts but owns a 4.89 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP over 42.1 innings. He's lined up to face the Guardians in Cleveland on Sunday.
