It was the first game action of the season for Santander, who got the start at DH and hit third for the Bisons. The 31-year-old still has a chance to contribute for the Blue Jays before the end of the regular season if he can shake off enough rust, and Santander's timeline could be accelerated if the shoulder issue George Springer is playing through proves to be more serious than the team anticipates. Santander's brief Toronto tenure has been marred by shoulder trouble that led to surgery in February, but he's still just two years removed from a 44-homer campaign with Baltimore.

Blue Jays' Anthony Santander: Kicking off rehab assignment Wednesday
Santander (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Santander will serve as the designated hitter initially before playing defense, as the Blue Jays plan to have the veteran mainly be an outfielder with the big-league club. In two seasons with Toronto, Santander has appeared in just 54 games, including zero this season. He slashed a miserable .175/.271/.294 in 2025 with six home runs, 18 RBI, 16 runs scored and a 25:61 BB:K across 221 trips to the plate. Any production the team gets from the soon-to-be 32-year-old should be viewed as a bonus.

Blue Jays' Anthony Santander: Might be ready for rehab next week
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that Santander (shoulder) has been facing live pitching this week at the team's spring training complex in Florida and could be ready for a rehab assignment next week, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.
Santander had surgery in February to repair his left shoulder labrum, but he's given himself a chance to return before the end of this month with his recent progress. Still, the odds are long that he's able to make it back in the coming weeks and contribute offensively following an extended layoff.

Santander (shoulder) has been hitting off a pitching machine at the Blue Jays' spring training complex and still hopes to return before the end of the season, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Santander underwent surgery to repair his left shoulder labrum in February and had to be shut down for a bit around midseason due to continued discomfort. However, Santander seems to be trending in the right direction and is aiming to face live pitching next week. If that happens, a return sometime in September could materialize.

Santander underwent surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder in February, but he "could definitely be a factor" for the Blue Jays by August, manager John Schneider said Thursday. A timetable for Santander's return won't become clearer until he's ready for a rehab assignment, and he will need the equivalent of a full spring training's worth of at-bats before being activated.

The move was fully expected at some point in 2026 after Santander underwent shoulder surgery in February.
