Player Outlook
Aaron Civale lived the I-94 life in 2025 pitching for Milwaukee as well as both clubs in the Chicago market. Civale's season began with the Brewers, but a terrible five-start stretch with too many homers involved introduced talks of a bullpen role that Civale did not wish to accept. The Brewers promptly dealt him to the White Sox in what turned out to be an incredibly lopsided trade to acquire Andrew Vaughn. Vaughn came to Milwaukee hit a bunch of homers while Civale went to the south side of Chicago and picked up where he left off allowing runs while reducing his home run rate. The Cubs grabbed Civale in a trade just before the deadline as their roster was dealing with some attrition and put Civale to use in the bullpen where he pitched effectively over a small sample size. Civale is now a free agent hoping to latch on with a club as a fifth starter, but he needs an extremely friendly home park in order to be considered for anything other than 50-round draft and hold leagues or very deep mono leagues.

  • Athletics' Aaron Civale: Lands in Sacramento

Civale agreed to a one-year $6 million contract with the A's on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The 30-year-old right-hander split the 2025 campaign between the Brewers, White Sox and Cubs, finishing the regular season with a 4.85 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 88:33 K:BB across 102 innings. Civale started in 18 of those 23 appearances last year and is a safe bet to work out of the Athletics' rotation, providing another veteran presence in a unit that's unsettled at the back end.

  • Cubs' Aaron Civale: Earns first career save

Civale earned the save in Wednesday's 10-3 win over the Mets, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three over three innings. Civale entered in the seventh with an eight-run cushion and cruised to the finish line, with his only blemish coming on a solo homer by Juan Soto in the eighth. It marked the right-hander's first career MLB save and capped off a strong regular-season stint with the Cubs. Since being acquired across from the White Sox, the 30-year-old has posted a 2.08 ERA and a flawless 14:0 K:BB through 13 innings, a notable turnaround from his earlier struggles with the Cubs' crosstown rivals.

  • Cubs' Aaron Civale: Earns first Chicago win

Civale (4-9) tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Wednesday's 8-4 victory over the Pirates. He allowed one hit and struck out three. With starter Matthew Boyd scuffling through three innings, Chicago turned to Civale in long relief, and the veteran earned his first win with his new team since getting claimed off waivers at the end of August. Civale has looked sharp with the Cubs, as he's allowed just one run across eight innings in three appearances, and he's struck out eight batters as well. The righty's fantasy value is capped in his current role, though it looks like he could be a positive addition to Chicago's bullpen down the stretch.

  • Cubs' Aaron Civale: Bullpen role awaits

The Cubs plan to use Civale out of the bullpen after claiming him off waivers from the White Sox on Sunday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Civale was reluctant to pitch out of the bullpen for Milwaukee before he was traded to the White Sox on June 13, but he'll have to settle for a relief role as he moves on to his third team of the season. The veteran righty had a stretch of three straight scoreless outings coming out of the All-Star break, but he otherwise turned in an unremarkable 13-start run with the White Sox, logging a 5.37 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 55:26 K:BB in 67 innings. The Cubs will likely keep Civale stretched out in a long-relief role in the event that a spot in the rotation opens up in September, but for now, the team appears set to proceed with Colin Rea and Javier Assad as its back-end starters until Jameson Taillon (groin) and/or Michael Soroka (shoulder) return from the injured list.

  • Cubs' Aaron Civale: Moves across town

The Cubs claimed Civale off waivers from the White Sox on Sunday. The veteran right-hander will move on to his third stop of the season, after the White Sox previously acquired him from the Brewers in the June 13 deal that sent Andrew Vaughn to Milwaukee. He had been making regular turns out of the White Sox rotation since the trade, submitting; a 5.37 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 55:26 K:BB in 67 innings over his 13 starts with the club. Since the 30-year-old is on an expiring contract and wasn't part of the rebuilding White Sox's plans, he was exposed to waivers and scooped by the Cubs. Civale's exact role with his new organization isn't yet clear, as the Cubs have been getting decent results from Colin Rea and Javier Assad at the back end of the rotation of late and may not view Civale as an upgrade over either pitcher. If that's the case, Civale could initially be ticketed for a long-relief role with the Cubs.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Serves up grand slam in no-decision

Civale took a no-decision Friday against the Twins, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out five. Civale was able to make it through three scoreless innings to begin his outing, but a Royce Lewis grand slam in the fourth inning left a major mark on the hurler's ledger. The veteran right-hander has now fanned at least five in five of his last six starts, though the four walks Friday tied a season high. Civale has a 5.05 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 51:25 K:BB over 62.1 innings for the White Sox this year, and he'll remain a volatile fantasy option next week at home versus the division-rival Royals.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Turns in another gem

Civale (3-6) allowed two walks and one hit while striking out eight across 6.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday against the Angels. Civale retired the first nine batters he faced and was never particularly troubled by the Angels while also racking up 13 swinging strikes on 94 pitches. He has suddenly found his form, as this marked his third consecutive outing without allowing an earned run, a stretch of 17.1 innings. Civale has also maintained a 20:3 K:BB in that span while picking up a pair of wins.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Tosses five scoreless frames

Civale did not factor into the decision in Saturday's game against the Cubs, allowing three hits while striking out six across five scoreless innings. He did not issue a walk. Civale did not give up an earned run for a second straight start, limiting the Cubs to three baserunners while generating 10 whiffs, though he was lifted in the sixth despite tossing just 69 pitches (47 strikes). His last two starts have brought down his numbers down to a 3.86 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 63.2 innings this season. Civale is slated to start against the Angels on the road next weekend.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Cruises to easy win

Civale (2-6) allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Pirates. Civale gave up one unearned run in the third inning but otherwise faced little trouble in his first quality start of the year. It was the second time this season he completed at least six innings and his first appearance without allowing an earned run. Civale had walked multiple batters in four straight outings before Sunday and now owns a 42:23 K:BB after punching out a season-high six batters. He dropped his ERA to 4.76 across 58.2 frames between the Brewers and White Sox. Civale is projected for a home matchup against the Cubs next weekend.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Falls apart late in loss

Civale didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Guardians, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings while recording three strikeouts. Civale cruised through the first five innings while allowing just one hit, but he came undone in the sixth, giving up a three-run homer to Kyle Manzardo as part of a four-run frame that ended his outing. The 30-year-old has struggled to limit damage since joining the White Sox, surrendering four or more earned runs in three of his six starts with the team. Over that span, he's posted a 5.58 ERA with 15 walks and an 0-4 record, continuing a frustrating trend of inconsistency.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Knocked around by Jays

Civale (1-6) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out none across four innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Blue Jays. Civale unraveled in the third inning by allowing five earned runs on five hits, including a home run and two doubles. While he held Toronto off the scoreboard in his three other frames, he wasn't fooling any hitters as he generated only one swinging strike on his 79 pitches. Civale has struggled for the majority of the season and now has a 5.40 ERA and 1.72 WHIP paired with a 14:13 K:BB across five starts since joining the White Sox.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Downed by Dodgers

Civale (1-5) allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings to take the loss versus the Dodgers on Thursday. All of the damage came over the first three innings. Civale has pitched to a 4.29 ERA and 1.62 WHIP while losing three of his four starts with the White Sox. For the season, he's at a 4.60 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 33:18 B:BB across 43 innings between the White Sox and the Brewers. Civale is projected to make his next start at home versus the surging Blue Jays, which makes him a risky fantasy option once again.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Tagged for five runs in loss

Civale (1-4) took the loss against Toronto on Saturday, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out two across seven innings. Civale put the White Sox on the back foot after yielding a leadoff home run to Bo Bichette before giving up three more runs on five singles in the second. Civale seemed to settle in and kept the Blue Jays off the board over the next four frames, but he was tagged for another run on a Vladimir Guerrero solo shot in the seventh. It was Civale's longest outing of the season, but it was the second start in which he allowed five runs, and he now sits with a 5.03 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 34 innings. He'll look for his first win with the White Sox in his next start, tentatively slated for next weekend at home against the Giants.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Officially added to roster

The White Sox added Civale to their active roster Saturday. Civale was acquired by Chicago in a trade with Milwaukee on Friday. He's slated to make his White Sox debut as a starter Sunday versus Texas. To make room for Civale on the 26-man roster, lefty reliever Tyler Gilbert was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.

  • White Sox's Aaron Civale: Traded to White Sox

The White Sox acquired Civale from the Brewers on Friday in exchange for first baseman Andrew Vaughn, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Civale requested a trade after being told earlier this week that he would be demoted to the bullpen, and Milwaukee has quickly accommodated the request. The veteran right-hander last pitched Monday, so he could join Chicago's rotation as soon as Saturday against the Rangers. Civale held a 4.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB in 22 innings over his five starts with Milwaukee this season.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Requests to traded

Civale requested a trade from the Brewers after manager Pat Murphy informed the right-hander Wednesday that he would be moved to the bullpen, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic report. Civale is the odd man out of the rotation to accommodate the arrival of top prospect Jacob Misiorowski, who will be called up from Triple-A Nashville to start Thursday versus the Cardinals. However, Civale's agent, Jack Toffey, has formally made a request to Brewers general manager Matt Arnold that his client be traded to a team where he can continue being used as a starting pitcher. The Brewers are under no obligation to honor the request, but there should be interest in Civale if the club decides a trade is best for both parties. Civale has been limited to five starts this season due to a strained hamstring, posting a 4.91 ERA and 19:7 K:BB over 22 innings. The 30-year-old is making $8 million this season and is set to become a free agent this offseason.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Shifting to bullpen

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Civale will move to the bullpen for the time being, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The Brewers are calling up right-hander Jacob Misiorowski from Triple-A Nashville to join the rotation Thursday, and Murphy wants to stick with a traditional five-man setup, so Civale will be the odd man out. Civale could eventually rejoins the rotation if Misiorowski struggles, although the Brewers hope to get Brandon Woodruff (shoulder/ankle/elbow) back from the 60-day injured list in the coming weeks.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Pitches well against Red Sox

Civale allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out four in five innings Tuesday against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision. Civale blanked the Red Sox through five innings while tossing 75 pitches. He returned for the sixth and was met with a ground-rule double from Ceddanne Rafaela, which ended his night. Rafaela would come around to score for the game's first run and leave Civale in line for the loss. Still, it was a needed bounce-back outing for Civale, who came in having allowed seven runs and four homers in seven innings this season. Civale lines up to make his third road start of the campaign next week against the Reds.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Inefficient in return

Civale (hamstring) didn't factor into the decision in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Pirates after striking out three batters and allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks in four innings. Civale turned in an up-and-down performance in his first start for Milwaukee since March 30 after he had been on the 15-day injured list for nearly two months while recovering from a strained left hamstring. The 29-year-old right-hander has now given up four home runs over only seven innings this season, and he also hit a batter Thursday while throwing just 42 of his 73 pitches for strikes. Civale was operating under a restricted workload in his return, but he should be able to push his pitch count up to the 80-to-90 range in his next start, which will likely come early next week against the Red Sox in MIlwaukee.

  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Scratched from rehab start

Civale (hamstring) didn't make his rehab start at Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday as originally scheduled, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The Brewers haven't officially named a starter for Thursday's game in Pittsburgh, so the decision to scratch Civale from his minor-league start could indicate that the 29-year-old righty will be activated early to pitch against the Pirates. If he ends up starting Thursday, Civale would presumably operate under a workload restriction, as he built up to just 60 pitches during his last rehab outing.
