Player Outlook
Coming off four straight 30-homer campaigns, Yordan Alvarez was limited to 48 games last season due to a hand fracture and ankle sprain. The veteran slugger certainly wasn't a stranger to injuries prior to 2025, but he still averaged 135 regular-season games per year and was consistently one of the best hitters in MLB. Even when available in 2025, Alvarez's performance was underwhelming, as he finished with a career-worst .797 OPS and just six home runs. However, he still showcased his elite plate discipline with a 14.5 percent walk rate and 16.6 percent strikeout rate. The skills are clearly still there as Alvarez enters his age-29 season, but durability remains a concern. His ADP in 2026 will likely end up being a bit of a discount if he's able to stay healthy, and most fantasy managers will probably be willing to take the risk given Alvarez's elite track record.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: In Monday's lineup

Alvarez will start at designated hitter and bat second in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Just as manager Joe Espada had suggested would be the case Sunday, Alvarez will enter the lineup Monday for what will be his spring debut. Alvarez was limited to 48 games last season due to hand and ankle injuries, but when healthy, he's consistently performed as one of the top hitters in the game. Espada has previously referred to Alvarez as the Astros' everyday designated hitter heading into 2026, so the 28-year-old would seem likely to see even less exposure to left field than he has in past seasons as Houston looks to keep him healthy over the course of the campaign.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Set for spring debut next week

Astros manager Joe Espada said Thursday that Alvarez will make his Grapefruit League debut next week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Alvarez is being eased into game action this spring following last year's injury issues, but he is considered fully healthy. The Astros plan for the slugger to spend most of his time in the designated-hitter slot this season in hopes that it will help keep him healthy, but Alvarez should still see the occasional start in left field.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Spring debut TBD

Alvarez will not make his spring debut until "a little bit later" due to normal buildup, per manager Joe Espada, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Carlos Correa and Christian Walker are slated to make their debuts Thursday, with Jose Altuve debuting Friday and Alvarez debuting sometime after that. Alvarez is discounted in fantasy drafts this year due to his injury issues in 2025, so it will be worth tracking how long his spring debut is delayed.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Clear of ankle pain

Alvarez (ankle) reported to spring training Sunday and announced that his is pain-free, Houston Chronicle reports. The 28-year-old dealt with a left ankle sprain late last year and dealt with some inflammation early in the offseason, but it appears he's entering spring training at 100 percent. Alvarez was limited to 48 games due to the ankle issue and a hand fracture, with his .273/.367/.430 slash line representing career lows in average and slugging percentage. The injury-plagued season ended a run of four straight 30-homer campaigns for the slugger, who is a popular rebound candidate in 2026. Alvarez is expected to see most of his action at designated hitter this season after making just 15 appearances in left field in 2025.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Slated for designated hitter duty

Astros manager Joe Espada said Monday that he would like Alvarez (ankle) to "spend most of his season" at designated hitter, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Alvarez started 32 games at DH and 15 in left field during his injury-shortened 2025 campaign, and Houston wants to limit his time in the field in hopes that it will help keep him healthy. While it makes sense for the Astros to do everything they can to keep Alvarez's bat in the lineup, it makes for a difficult lineup construction for Espada, especially when it comes to where Isaac Paredes (hamstring) slots in. Alvarez's 2025 season ended prematurely due to a severe left ankle sprain, but general manager Dana Brown said Monday that the slugger will be ready to go for the start of spring training.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Will be full-go for start of spring

Astros general manager Dana Brown said Monday that Alvarez (ankle) will be "full go" for the start of spring training, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Alvarez went down with a severe left ankle sprain late in the regular season. Brown said nearly a month ago that Alvarez had resumed jogging at roughly 70 percent intensity, and while it's unclear how much, if at all, the slugger has progressed with his running since then, Alvarez is not expected to be limited at the start of spring training. Additionally, manager Joe Espada added that his preference is for Alvarez to spend most of his time at designated hitter in 2026, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The 28-year-old will remain an injury risk heading into the 2026 campaign, however, after being limited to only 48 contests in 2025, mostly due to a fracture in his right hand.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Resumes jogging

General manager Dana Brown said Wednesday that Alvarez (ankle) has begun jogging at roughly 70 percent intensity, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Alvarez suffered a severe left ankle sprain during the final weeks of the regular season. Brown's comments indicate that the 28-year-old is coming along nicely in his recovery, and the GM added that he expects Alvarez to be ready to go by the start of spring training. The righty-hitting slugger also missed significant time in 2025 due to a fracture in his right hand and finished the season with just a .797 OPS across 199 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Out for rest of regular season

Alvarez said through an interpreter Sunday that he's progressing more quickly than expected in his recovery from a left ankle sprain, but he's not yet taking part in baseball activities and won't join the Astros for their season-ending six-game road trip during the upcoming week, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Alvarez will finish his seventh big-league season with a .273/.367/.430 slash line to go with six home runs, one stolen base, 27 RBI and 17 runs in just 48 games, as a small right hand fracture cost him significant time before he sprained his ankle in this past Monday's win over the Rangers. Houston isn't yet ruling Alvarez out from contributing during a potential postseason run, but a timeline for his return won't be mapped out until he starts swinging a bat and running the bases again. According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Alvarez has resumed walking with a protective boot on his left foot, but he said that he needs to wait for the swelling in his ankle to subside before he's able to take part in baseball activities.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Moved to injured list

The Astros placed Alvarez (ankle) on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Sept. 16, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Alvarez suffered a significant left ankle sprain earlier this week, and he'll officially be placed on the injured list Friday. The move opens up a spot on the active roster for Isaac Paredes (hamstring), who's coming off the IL. Alvarez will be eligible to return Sept. 26, which coincides with the start of Houston's final regular-season series. It's unclear if he'll be healthy enough to play before the end of the regular season, but manager Joe Espada said on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM on Friday that Alvarez's ankle is "getting better."

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Managing significant sprain

Manager Joe Espada said Tuesday that Alvarez has a "pretty significant" left ankle sprain and will be "out for a while," though the Astros won't be placing him on the injured list, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The description of the injury makes it sound as though Alvarez could be done for the rest of the regular season, but Houston apparently wants to keep their options open with the slugger rather than place him on the IL. Should the Astros change their mind and backdate an IL move, Alvarez might still be able to play in a series against the Angels on the final weekend. Regardless of the 28-year-old's roster status, Alvarez won't be back in the lineup in the immediate future.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Out of lineup Tuesday

Alvarez (ankle) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers. Alvarez sprained his left ankle in Monday's win over the Rangers and was spotted leaving the clubhouse on crutches and wearing a walking boot. While it's no surprise he's absent from Tuesday's lineup, there's still no word on the results of an MRI the slugger had on the ankle. The Astros have Jesus Sanchez in left field and Yainer Diaz at designated hitter Tuesday.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Set for MRI

Alvarez is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his left ankle Tuesday, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. The results of Alvarez's imaging will presumably determine whether he'll require a stint on the injured list. He exited Monday's matchup against the Rangers after slipping on home plate and was later diagnosed with a left ankle sprain. It's also worth noting that he was spotted leaving the clubhouse on crutches and wearing a walking boot, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Zach Cole would be next in line for chances in left field if Alvarez is ultimately forced to the IL.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Suffers ankle sprain

Alvarez left Monday's game against Texas with a left ankle sprain, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Alvarez suffered the injury while crossing home plate and was unable to continue. The club has yet to comment on whether he'll require a trip to the injured list, though more information on his availability moving forward should come to light over the next day or so.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Goes down with leg injury

Alvarez left Monday's game against the Rangers after appearing to suffer a left leg injury while running the bases, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Alvarez blew through a stop sign at third base and ended up scoring, but he looked to tweak his left leg while stepping on home plate and struggled to make it off the field under his own power. He was officially removed from the matchup in the top of the second inning. Alvarez will be considered day-to-day until the team has more information on the severity of his injury. The Astros deployed Zach Cole in right field and bumped Jesus Sanchez to left as a result.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Another three-hit effort

Alvarez went 3-for-5 with a double Tuesday against the Blue Jays. Alvarez continued his tear at the plate, as he tallied at least three hits for the fourth time in his last six starts. He has five extra-base hits, five RBI and four runs scored in that span. In 13 games since returning from a hand injury, Alvarez has hit an impressive .444 with three homers, nine RBI and eight runs scored.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Stays hot with three hits and homer

Alvarez went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Saturday's 11-0 win over the Rangers. The 28-year-old launched his sixth homer of the season in the fifth inning off Jacob deGrom, marking his third long ball in 11 games since returning from the injured list, a stretch in which he's gone 17-for-37 (.459) with nine RBI and eight runs scored. Alverez added another RBI with a single later in the contest. Saturday's effort also gave the slugger multiple hits in five of his last seven contests, a sign he's quickly regained form as a consistent middle-of-the-order threat for Houston.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Erupts for homer, four hits

Alvarez went 4-for-5 with a solo home run, a double, a second RBI and two total runs scored in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Yankees. Alvarez has pummeled Yankees pitching over the last two games, going 8-for-10 with three extra-base hits and three RBI in that span. The slugger struggled to find his timing right after being activated from the injured list after a lengthy absence due to a hand injury, but he's bounced back quickly with four multi-hit efforts over his last five games. He's now batting .273 with an .811 OPS, five homers, 25 RBI, 14 runs scored and one stolen base across 158 plate appearances this season.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Getting day off Thursday

Alvarez is out of the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Rockies, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Alvarez started in both of the past two days upon his return from the 60-day injured list, but he will get a breather for Thursday's matinee. Jose Altuve will occupy the designated-hitter spot and Mauricio Dubon will cover left field in the rubber match.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: First homer since IL stint

Alvarez went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored during Wednesday's 4-0 win over Colorado. Alvarez was activated from the injured list ahead of Tuesday's series opener and went hitless with two walks in four plate appearances in his return. He walked twice more Wednesday and delivered his first hit since coming back by launching a two-run home run off Angel Chivilli in the fourth inning. Alvarez slashed .210/.306/.340 with three home runs across 121 plate appearances before being placed on the injured list back in May.

  • Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Walks twice in return

Alvarez went 0-for-2 with two walks Tuesday against the Rockies. Alvarez made his long-awaited return from the injured list Tuesday, marking his first time in the lineup since April 28. After primarily serving as the designated hitter before his injury, Alvarez started in left field and hit fourth Tuesday. Alvarez went 7-for-15 on a rehab assignment, so rust may not be a significant issue early in his return.
