  Yorke has earned a roster spot with the Pirates to begin the 2026 season, Jason Mackey of MLB.com reports. Yorke had a contact-heavy approach at the plate this spring, as he struck out only four times across 49 plate appearances. However, he also had only two extra-base hits and a .370 slugging percentage. Yorke's primary value to the Pirates will be his versatility, as he played across the infield and at both corner-outfield spots this spring. He should operate primarily as a bench bat.

• Pirates' Nick Yorke: Adds muscle, tweaks swing

  Yorke added significant muscle over the offseason and also tweaked his swing in order to create more loft, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Yorke worked out for three-and-a-half hours per day on a near-daily basis over the offseason to remake his body and add strength. It's already shown up in his spring training results, too, as he's gone 4-for-11 at the plate in the early going. During Tuesday's game versus the Red Sox, he hit two balls in excess of 110 mph. Yorke is competing for a utility role with the Pirates.

Yorke was a regular in the Pittsburgh lineup for the second half of September last season, but after failing to win a spot on the Opening Day roster coming out of spring training, he's spent the entire 2025 campaign to date at Indianapolis. The 23-year-old has been serviceable as an everyday player for Indianapolis with a .287/.348/.406 slash line, seven home runs and 17 steals over 440 plate appearances, but he didn't dominate enough at any point to earn a call-up to Pittsburgh until the active roster expanded to 28 men Monday. Yorke will likely stick with the Pirates throughout the final month of the season, but he could end up filling a utility role and may not be in line for steady playing time.

  Triple-A Indianapolis placed Yorke on its 7-day injured list Friday due to right shoulder soreness, Dan Zagrilli of 93.7 The Fan Pittsburgh reports. According to Pirates general manager Ben Cherington, the sore shoulder has been an issue for Yorke since late in spring training, and the organization wasn't keen on having him continuing playing while he was compromised. The shoulder issue had yet to cause a decline in his production early on in the season at Indianapolis, as Yorke went 5-for-15 with three doubles, two walks, two runs and one RBI through four games. Cherington anticipates Yorke being in line for a brief stay on the shelf.

Pittsburgh optioned infielder Alika Williams to Triple-A to clear a spot on the active roster for Yorke, who could be in store for a near-everyday role while getting his first taste of the big leagues over the final two weeks of the season. After being acquired from the Red Sox at the trade deadline, Yorke slashed .359/.438/.516 with two home runs and eight stolen bases in 176 plate appearances at Indianapolis to earn his way to the majors.
