• White Sox's Luisangel Acuna: Will get 'runway' from White Sox

  White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Wednesday that Acuna will be given "runway to show off his talent, ability and ceiling," Brooke Fletcher of the Chicago Sports Network reports. Acuna is the key piece acquired from the Mets in a trade that sent Luis Robert to New York. Getz's words suggest the White Sox plan to play Acuna every day in 2026, though it's unclear if it will be at one or a variety of positions. Acuna is primarily an infielder, but he's played lots of center field, as well, and it's possible he could slide into that spot as Robert's replacement. While he's slashed only .248/.299/.341 so far at the big-league level, Acuna is 16-for-18 in stolen-base attempts in limited time, and it's in the speed department where he could be a fantasy asset in 2026. Acuna will turn 24 in March.

Moving to the White Sox will help his chances of sticking around in the big leagues, though he'll still face some competition for playing time at the keystone from Chase Meidroth.

  Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Thursday that Acuna is among the players who could step into larger roles in the infield with Jeff McNeil (oblique) expected to begin the season on the injured list, SNY.tv reports. Mendoza also listed Brett Baty, Donovan Walton and Luis De Los Santos as candidates to help replace McNeil, though Walton and De Los Santos are attending spring training as non-roster invitees and may be less likely than Acuna and Baty to break camp with the big club. After getting a call-up from Triple-A Syracuse last September, Acuna exclusively filled in at shortstop for an injured Francisco Lindor and hit .308 with three home runs in 40 plate appearances to close out the regular season, but he made all seven of his postseason appearances at the keystone while McNeil was recovering from a fractured wrist. Acuna has dabbled at both middle-infield spots as well as third base during Grapefruit League play, but expect most of his reps to come at the keystone for the rest of the spring as he looks to solidify himself as the top option at the position until McNeil returns.

Acuna has never played the hot corner in pro ball, but he's a capable defender at shortstop and second base and the Mets evidently feel he can handle the switch. Slated to turn 23 in March, Acuna slashed .308/.325/.641 in 14 regular-season games for the Mets in 2024, although that was after he managed a .258/.299/.355 line at Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets would probably prefer to give him more seasoning at Syracuse, but Acuna will get a chance to compete with Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio (knee) for reps at third base with the big club.

  Acuna went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a solo home run in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Phillies. The 22-year-old has been on fire since getting promoted last weekend, batting .385 (10-for-26) in his first eight big-league games with six extra-base hits, including three homers. Acuna's power display is especially impressive considering he hit only seven home runs in 131 games at Triple-A this season. Francisco Lindor (back) should return to the lineup any day now and reclaim the starting job at shortstop, but with a playoff spot on the line, the Mets could keep Acuna's red-hot bat in the lineup at another position.
