An older lefty who turned 26 this offseason and had Tommy John surgery in 2022, Ian Seymour dominated Double-A and Triple-A hitters in 2024 to the tune of a 2.48 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 162:41 K:BB in 145.1 innings. He actually made two starts at Triple-A late in 2021 just to keep pitching after the High-A season wrapped up. Seymour's fastball velocity isn't great (sits in the low-90s), but it's got good movement, and he's incredibly crafty. He's got a plus changeup and a quality cutter, and that might be enough to get by against big-league hitters if he can throw strikes and pitch with confidence. The Rays have a plethora of rotation options, but Seymour is on the 40-man roster and should be heard from at some point this season. Given his poor fastball velocity and relatively shallow repertoire, he'll have a small margin for error as a starter, and the Rays could opt to have him work as a bulk reliever initially.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Cut from big-league camp

The Rays optioned Seymour to minor-league camp Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Seymour nabbed a spot on the 40-man roster over the offseason after collecting a 2.35 ERA and 162:41 K:BB over 145.1 innings between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in 2024. He'll provide rotation depth at Durham this season.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Depth option for Tampa Bay

Seymour completed two scoreless innings while striking out two and walking one in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game. Seymour had an impressive spring debut, striking out Jarren Duran and Alex Bregman while also retiring Triston Casas and Trevor Story. Seymour is unlikely to start the season in the Rays' rotation, but he was added to the 40-man roster this offseason. He should be a top option to make spot starts if injuries occur.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Nabs 40-man roster spot

The Rays selected Seymour's contract from Triple-A Durham on Monday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. By adding Seymour to the 40-man roster now, the Rays will shield him from the Rule 5 Draft. Seymour, who turns 26 in December, held a 2.35 ERA and 162:41 K:BB over 145.1 innings between Double-A Montgomery and Durham in 2024.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Climbs to Triple-A

Seymour was promoted from Double-A Montgomery to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings for the Bulls. The 25-year-old southpaw actually made two starts at Triple-A late in 2021 just to keep pitching after the High-A season wrapped up. Since then he's undergone Tommy John surgery and this is his first full season since the procedure. Seymour's fastball velocity isn't great (sits in the low-90s), but he's got a plus changeup and a quality slider. He logged a 2.36 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 91.1 innings at Double-A prior to his promotion.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Back in action

Seymour (elbow) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.1 scoreless innings Thursday against Single-A Kannapolis. He didn't factor into the decision. Seymour has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and after making a handful of rehab appearances, he was officially activated from the injured list and assigned to Single-A Charleston. The 24-year-old worked his way to Triple-A Durham during the 2021 campaign (no runs allowed and nine strikeouts over 10 frames) and was stationed at Double-A Montgomery in 2022 before suffering a season-ending elbow injury. Given the nature of Seymour's injury, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the organization monitor his innings closely throughout the remainder of the minor-league season.

  • Rays' Ian Seymour: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Seymour (elbow) is on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Montgomery and underwent Tommy John surgery this week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Seymour posted an 8.10 ERA over 16.2 innings to open the season for the Biscuits before landing on the injured list in early May. The 2020 second-round pick will miss the rest of the season and will also be sidelined for at least the first half of 2023.
