Brayan Bello signed a six-year extension during spring training, picked up an Opening Day win and early on looked like a No. 1 starter. Then the walks started. He went from 76th percentile in BB% (6.7) in 2023 to 33rd (9.1) in 2024. The right-hander managed to win 14 games but needed good run support during the rough patches. Bello's 4.49 ERA was the worst among starters with at least that many wins. Walks don't always kill, but they hurt during the first half when he allowed 14 home runs over 89.2 innings (1.4 HR/9) and entered the break with a 5.32 ERA. The walks didn't stop in the second half, but Bello was able to prevent damage through better location which kept the ball in the park; he allowed just five homers in 72.2 innings (0.6 per nine) following the break. The pressure to lead the staff won't be on the 25-year-old in 2025, as Bello should slot behind Garrett Crochet and Tanner Houck -- and possibly Walker Buehler.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Should join rotation early

Bello (shoulder) expects to be activated by the first or second week of April, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Bello will open the regular season on the 15-day injured list and remain behind in Fort Myers when the Red Sox break camp. His IL stint can be backdated by as many as three days, so in theory the pitcher could be ready for the club's first home series against the Cardinals, which begins April 4. Boston opens the regular season with two road stops, first in Texas and then Baltimore.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Set for bullpen Saturday

Bello (shoulder) is set to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Bello will not be ready for Opening Day and will begin the 2025 regular season on the injured list. With Bello, Kutter Crawford (knee) and Lucas Giolito (hamstring) expected to open on the IL, Quinn Priester, Richard Fitts and Cooper Criswell are candidates to be part of the rotation in the early weeks of the regular season.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Opening Day looking unlikely

Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Bello (shoulder) is still behind schedule but is progressing well, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Bello began experiencing shoulder soreness early on in camp, and with just over two weeks left in spring training, it's becoming increasingly likely that he'll require a stint on the injured list to open the season. Should that be the case, Quinn Priester and Richard Fitts would be the leading candidates to fill the open spot in Boston's rotation.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Opening Day not guaranteed

Bello (shoulder) will throw another bullpen session Monday, and manager Alex Cora said the organization is "still shooting for him to be on the Opening Day roster, but obviously it's March 2 now," Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. The right-hander was briefly shut down at the start of camp due to shoulder soreness, so he's a bit behind in his preparations for the start of the regular season. Bello still has more than four weeks to ramp up ahead of Opening Day and has a realistic chance to be available -- especially since he probably wouldn't be pitching in the first couple games of the season anyway -- but he may need a clean buildup the rest of the way to avoid an IL stint to begin the campaign.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Throws bullpen

Bello (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Bello threw approximately 30 pitches at about 70-to-75 percent intensity. The 25-year-old right-hander has been slowed by shoulder inflammation and is at the edge of having enough time to be ready for start of the regular season, March 27 in Texas. Unlike in 2024, when Bello was given the Opening Day start, that honor is expected to go to Garrett Crochet this season. As such, Bello could still be available at the back end of the rotation for the first week.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Side session set for Friday

Bello (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Bello has been slowed in camp by right shoulder soreness but has been throwing on flat ground without issue and will take the next step in his throwing progression Friday. The Red Sox remain optimistic that the right-hander has enough time to be ready for Opening Day, but Bello will have to continue showing progress without having any setbacks.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Throwing from 90 feet

Bello (shoulder) has extended his throwing program to 90 feet and will undergo a strength test Sunday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. The right-hander was shut down briefly at the start of camp due to shoulder soreness, and he's still building up his arm strength before progressing to bullpen sessions. Bello's availability for the beginning of the regular season remains up in the air, and he may need to return to mound work soon to avoid a delayed start to the campaign.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Managing sore shoulder

Bello was shut down for a few days due to shoulder soreness but has resumed throwing, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. It's encouraging that the right-hander is already back to throwing, but any arm issues early in camp are a cause for at least mild concern. There's no indication that Bello's availability for the start of the regular season has been affected however, and Boston is counting on him to take a regular turn in a rotation that already features question marks in Walker Buehler and Lucas Giolito (elbow).

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Wild in 13th win

Bello (13-7) picked up the win Monday against Baltimore, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks across 5.1 innings. He struck out five. Just 62 of Bello's 101 pitches found the strike zone Monday, and he tied his career high in walks. The right-hander was given an extra day of rest between starts, making an appearance against Baltimore on Monday instead of the lowly White Sox. Through 27 starts, Bello has a 4.70 ERA and a 140:58 K:BB across 147.1 innings. He's one of 12 pitchers to have 13 or more wins. Bello is tentatively scheduled to face the Yankees this weekend.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Takes step back against Mets

Bello (12-7) took the loss against the Mets on Monday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four batters over five innings. Bello had been on a roll coming into Monday, notching three quality starts over his past four appearances and posting a 2.49 ERA during that span. He wasn't up to that level of performance against New York, as he allowed at least one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings and didn't retire the side in order until his fifth (and final) frame. Bello still managed to keep Boston in the game, and his next start is lined up to be a juicy matchup against the hapless White Sox this weekend.

Bello (11-6) took the loss Friday, giving up five runs on seven hits and four walks over 5.1 innings as the Red Sox were downed 12-2 by the Diamondbacks. He struck out two. Bello was tagged for five or more runs for the sixth time this season, ending a strong stretch that saw the right-hander post a 3.57 ERA and five quality starts in his prior seven outings. Bello had gone 10 straight starts without a loss before Friday, and he'll take a 4.95 ERA into his next start.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Notches 11th victory

Bello (11-5) earned the win over Baltimore on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out six batters over six innings. Bello tossed five scoreless frames before serving up a game-tying solo homer to Gunnar Henderson in the sixth inning. That was the hurler's final frame, but Boston scored in the top of the seventh to move him in line for the victory. Bello has shown considerable improvement since the All-Star break, notching five quality starts across seven outings and posting a 3.57 ERA across 40.1 innings. The improvement in ERA is particularly promising after the right-hander recorded a 5.40 ERA over 83.1 frames during the first half of the season.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: On paternity list, won't miss start

The Red Sox placed Bello on the paternity list Friday, but he will return in time for his scheduled start Monday against Texas, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Bello will spend his weekend away from the team for personal reasons, but the expectation is he'll be back for Monday's start. In his last six outings, Bello has a 2-0 record, though he's logged a 5.08 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 33.2 innings. Cam Booser will temporarily join the 26-man roster and supply the bullpen with an additional arm.

Bello allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings in a no-decision Tuesday versus the Royals. Bello allowed two of the three runs in the fifth inning, leaving with the game tied at 3-3. It's a fourth straight no-decision for the right-hander, but this was the first time since June 25 that he failed to complete five frames. For the year, Bello has a 5.16 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 109:41 K:BB over 111.2 innings across 21 starts. His next outing is projected to be a home start versus the Rangers.

Coming into Friday, the 25-year-old Bello had delivered quality starts in three of his previous four outings, going 3-0 with a 4.44 ERA in that span. Overall, he's 10-5 on the year with a 5.27 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and. 96:36 K:BB across 100.2 innings. Bello's currently slated to face the Mariners at home next week in his next start.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Fans seven in quality start

Bello did not factor into the decision in a loss to the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over six innings while striking out seven. Bello struck out four of the first six batters he faced in the contest prior to surrendering a solo homer to Gavin Lux in the bottom of the second. The right-hander was then able to hold the Dodgers scoreless over the next three frames before allowing three of the first four batters to reach in the sixth, leading to two more runs coming across for Los Angeles. Bello had won each of his previous three starts coming in and now holds a 28:5 K:BB in July. He's also logged a quality start in back-to-back outings and in four of his last six overall.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Earns 10th win

Bello (10-5) picked up the win Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.1 innings against the Royals. He struck out three. Bello's day started by allowing a leadoff homer to Adam Frazier, but he was quickly staked to a 4-1 lead and scattered only two additional runs the rest of the way while working into the seventh inning for the second time in three starts and just the third time this season. Bello has alternated good and bad outings recently, with Sunday representing his third quality start in his last six while he has allowed 16 earned runs in the other three appearances while failing to complete five innings twice. Bello places 10th in the majors with 10 wins; however, an ERA of 5.32 with a 1.47 WHIP and 85 strikeouts over 89.2 innings represent disappointing figures for the talented 25-year-old righty.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Racks up career-high 11 Ks

Bello (9-5) picked up the win in Tuesday's 12-9 victory over the A's, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out a career-high 11. The right-hander's line was looking much better through five innings, but Lawrence Butler helped chase Bello from the game in the sixth with a three-run homer. The 11 strikeouts topped his previous career high of 10, set Sept. 15, 2023 against the Blue Jays. Despite the surge in Ks, Bello has been tagged for four or more runs in five of seven trips to the mound since the beginning of June, stumbling to a 7.00 ERA. 1.89 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB in 36 innings over that stretch. He lines up for one more outing before the All-Star break in a home series against the Royals this weekend.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Fans seven in eighth win

Bello (8-5) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on seven hits and a walk over 6.2 innings in a 7-2 victory over the Marlins. He struck out seven. The 25-year-old right-hander was given a breather by the Red Sox -- his last start came back on June 25, when he lasted only 2.1 innings and surrendered seven runs to the Blue Jays -- and it paid off, as Bello produced his fourth quality start of the season on 91 pitches (61 strikes). The seven Ks were his highest total since May 28, while Wednesday's outing was the first time he hadn't issued multiple free passes since May 17. Bello should resume his regular turn in the rotation after this performance, which lines him up to take the mound at home early next week against the A's.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Early exit against Jays

Bello (7-5) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up seven runs on five hits and three walks over 2.1 innings as the Red Sox were downed 9-4 by the Blue Jays. He struck out two. All seven runs crossed the plate in a disastrous third inning that saw Bello put the first six batters on base before ceding an RBI groundout to former teammate Justin Turner. The right-hander has been tagged for four runs or more in five of his last eight starts, and he carries a bloated 7.49 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 37:20 K:BB through 39.2 innings over that stretch. Bello will try to get back on track in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Padres.
