  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Summoned to majors

McDonald was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. The Giants are short on fresh arms for the final game of the regular season, so McDonald could make his big-league debut in relief of Hayden Birdsong. McDonald, a 23-year-old righty with decent stuff, logged 78.1 innings across High-A, Double-A and Triple-A this season.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Returns from 7-day injured list

Double-A Richmond reinstated McDonald (groin) from its 7-day injured list Sunday. McDonald has resided on Richmond's IL all season but is finally ready to join the Giants' Eastern League affiliate after an extended rehab assignment that first kicked off May 14. In 10 total outings between the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and High-A Eugene covering 24.1 innings, McDonald turned in a 4.44 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Rehabbing in Arizona

McDonald (groin) has turned in a 5.79 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 4:2 K:BB in 4.2 innings through four rehab outings in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. McDonald has resided on Double-A Richmond's 7-day injured list all season while healing up from a groin injury, but he may not be far away from making his 2024 debut for the Giants' Eastern League affiliate. He's yet to pitch at the Double-A level but was dominant during his time at High-A Eugene in 2023, pitching to a 0.96 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 39:8 K:BB in 37.2 innings.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Out with groin injury

McDonald is on the injured list at Double-A Richmond with a groin injury, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. McDonald is a nice sleeper prospect for dynasty leagues, as he has excellent control and could potentially get to pitch half his games in the pitcher-friendly park in San Francisco. In his age-22 season, McDonald logged a 1.33 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 47.1 innings across 14 appearances in the lower levels of the minors. He averaged 94 mph with his two-seam fastball last year (touching 98 mph) and had a groundball rate north of 70 percent. McDonald also sports a plus curveball, while mixing in a four-seamer and a slider.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Optioned by San Francisco

McDonald was optioned to minor-league camp by the Giants on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. McDonald was added to the 40-man roster over the winter, but he was never going to make the club given that he's yet to advance past A-ball. The 23-year-old missed much of last season with arm issues but pitched very well when healthy, 0.96 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in 37.2 innings at High-A Eugene.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Protected from Rule 5 Draft

The Giants added McDonald to their 40-man roster Tuesday. Rather than risking losing McDonald in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, the Giants will give the 22-year-old righty a spot on their 40-man. McDonald spent the early stages of the season working his way back from an arm injury before posting a dominant 0.96 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in 37.2 innings at High-A Eugene. It's possible the Giants bump McDonald up to Double-A to begin the 2024 campaign.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: Returns from IL

McDonald (arm) was reinstated from High-A Eugene's 7-day injured list May 5 and made his season debut a day later, covering three innings and giving up one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out three in a 4-2 win over Spokane. McDonald spent the first month of the season on the shelf after he fell behind Eugene's other starting pitchers in his throwing program and required more time to build up at extended spring training. The Giants will likely be cognizant about managing the 22-year-old right-hander's innings this season, but he should be able to make one start or extended relief appearance per week now that he's back from the IL.

  • Giants' Trevor McDonald: On IL at High-A

McDonald is on the 7-day injured list with High-A Eugene and is building up arm strength in extended spring training, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. A 22-year-old righty, McDonald split time as a starter and reliever en route to logging a 2.31 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 120 strikeouts in 101.1 innings at Single-A and High-A last season. It's unclear how much time he will need before he is ready to rejoin the High-A pitching staff.
