Mayer has shifted his rehab program to the Red Sox's facility in Florida and is not expected to return from Triple-A Worcester's 7-day injured list before the end of the season while he recovers from a lumbar strain, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Promoted to Triple-A on Aug. 12 along with fellow top prospects Kyle Teel and Roman Anthony, Mayer has yet to debut for Worcester and will now have to wait until 2025 to do so. Mayer had produced an .850 OPS to go with 13 stolen bases in 335 plate appearances at Double-A Portland but hadn't played since July 30 due to what the Red Sox initially viewed as a short-term hip issue. With Mayer's effort to return to game action having plateaued in recent weeks, however, the 21-year-old was sent in for further medical evaluation, at which point he was diagnosed with the lumbar strain. On a positive note, Mayer is expected to make a full recovery from the injury and have a normal offseason, putting him on track to enter spring training without any restrictions.

Mayer had scuffled out of the gate with just two hits over his first 20 at-bats before breaking out Saturday. He told Brendan Samson of MLB.com that he'd been late on swings early in the season but got his timing down Saturday. "I just made sure today that I got my foot down early, started a little earlier and got a good pitch to hit and I was able to do that today," Mayer said. Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham confirmed Monday that Mayer has been promoted from Single-A Salem to High-A Greenville, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Boston will be moving two of its top selections from the 2020 and 2021 draft classes to Greenville, as power-hitting third baseman Blaze Jordan will also be making the jump from Salem. Mayer, a 19-year-old shortstop who was the No. 4 overall selection in 2021, received the promotion after slashing .286/.406/.504 with nine home runs and 16 stolen bases to go with a 16.8 percent walk rate across 308 plate appearances for Salem.
