• Cardinals' Michael McGreevy: Depressed velocity this spring

  McGreevy yielded one run on three hits and no walks over five innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League start versus the Astros. He recorded five strikeouts. He served up a solo home run to Taylor Trammell, but that was the lone run the Astros were able to push across against the righty. McGreevy finished spring training with a 2.45 ERA and 16:2 K:BB over 18.1 innings, but his velocity has been down across the board. He averaged 90.8 mph with his four-seamer Sunday, down significantly from the 93 mph he averaged with the pitch in 2025. It's possible McGreevy will start throwing harder once the bright lights are on, but the lack of velocity is concerning for a hurler who's already had difficulty missing bats. McGreevy will make his season debut Saturday at home against the Rays.

McGreevy got his pitch count up to 60 in the outing, surrendering four singles and no walks to go along with his four punchouts. McGreevy is tentatively lined up to start the third game of the season for the Cardinals on March 29 at home against the Rays.

Most of the damage against McGreevy came in the the third inning, when Pittsburgh belted two homers to plate three runs. The righty recovered well from that rough frame, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, with the only Pirates baserunner over that stretch being wiped out on a double play. Though McGreevy had a three-outing streak of quality starts snapped Monday, he did manage to once again give St. Louis six innings, which he's done in each of his past five starts. Over that stretch, he's compiled a decent 3.90 ERA with a 21:4 K:BB across 30 frames.

It was the third straight turn through the rotation for McGreevy, who should continue to get an extended look with the Cardinals down the stretch. McGreevy has held his own when given opportunities with the major-league club this season, posting a 3.81 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 28.1 innings spanning five outings (four starts).
