  • Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Protected from Rule 5 Draft

The Athletics selected Hoglund's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. Hoglund, who turns 25 in December, held a 3.44 ERA and 119:37 K:BB across 130.2 innings between Double-A Midland and Las Vegas in 2024. He was much more successful at Midland (2.84 ERA) than he was at Las Vegas (5.88 ERA), which isn't a surprise given the step up in competition and hitter-friendly environment in the Pacific Coast League. Hoglund is a candidate to see some starts for the A's in 2025.

  • Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Returns from IL

Hoglund (biceps) allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one over three innings in his 2023 debut May 29 after being activated from Single-A Stockton's 7-day injured list. The right-hander missed most of the first two months of the season while recovering from a biceps injury that dated back to last August. Though his results in his season debut left something to be desired, the Athletics are likely just happy to see the 23-year-old back on the mound again after the biceps injury and his recovery from Tommy John surgery have limited him to just three appearances as a professional since he was drafted in 2021.

  • Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Makes pro debut

Hoglund (elbow) made his first rehab appearance in the Arizona Complex League on Saturday, allowing an unearned run on one hit with five strikeouts in two innings. Hoglund had been sidelined since even before he was drafted last year due to Tommy John surgery, so this was actually his professional debut. He'll probably get another appearance or two in rookie ball before settling in at either Single-A or High-A for the duration of the season. Expect the A's to handle the 22-year-old righty with kid gloves for the duration of 2022, but he could advance quickly next season if he lives up to his billing.

  • Blue Jays' Gunnar Hoglund: Headed to Oakland

Hoglund was traded from the Blue Jays to the Athletics on Wednesday along with Kevin Smith, Zach Logue and Kirby Snead in exchange for Matt Chapman, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. The 22-year-old righty once had a chance to be the first overall pick in 2021, but he needed Tommy John surgery in May of 2021, so he fell to the Blue Jays at pick 19. Hoglund could return to game action sometime this summer and immediately slots in as one of Oakland's top pitching prospects.

  • Blue Jays' Gunnar Hoglund: Nearing mound work

Hoglund (elbow) has been throwing off flat ground for four months and hopes to advance to mound work soon, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Hoglund was selected by the Blue Jays with the 19th pick in last year's draft despite the fact he'd undergone Tommy John surgery in May. He appears to be recovering on schedule and has been able to throw from 120 feet, but he'll need to stretch out to 150 feet before he gets back on a mound. A typical recovery timeline would see him miss the early part of the upcoming season, but he should be able to make his professional debut at some point over the summer.
