Player Outlook
There aren't that many prospects who have a realistic chance of hitting 30 homers and stealing 30 bases in the same big-league season, and Joshua Baez is one of those select few. He received a $2.25 million bonus in the 2021 draft out of high school because of his massive power potential and long-term upside. A 6-foot-3, 220-pound brick house with the speed to patrol center field and the arm for right field, Baez is still dripping with fantasy-relevant tools, but massive strikeout issues to begin his career led to him being dropped in most dynasty leagues at some point before 2025. Baez was demoted to Single-A and placed on the Development List on July 30, 2024. He returned with a reworked swing a few weeks later and logged a 181 wRC+ in 15 games to close 2024. Baez dominated (152 wRC+) in a brief 38-game run at High-A to open 2025 and then fully broke out in 79 games at Double-A. All told, Baez slashed .287/.384/.500 with 20 homers, 54 steals, an 11.8 percent walk rate and a 20.6 percent strikeout rate. He looks more like a power hitter than a speedster, but he's spoken about how much he likes stealing bases, and he was successful on 85.7 percent of his attempts in 2025. Baez was added to the 40-man roster this offseason and is likely the Cardinals' right fielder of the future. He could be up early in 2026 if he handles Triple-A the way he did Double-A.

  • Cardinals' Joshua Baez: Selected to 40-man

The Cardinals selected Baez's contract from Double-A Springfield on Tuesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Baez adjusted well to Double-A ball upon receiving his promotion in late May, slashing .271/.371/.509 with 16 homers, 55 RBI, 46 runs scored and 33 stolen bases across 79 games at Springfield. His breakout season has earned him a spot on St. Louis' 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 Draft in December, and he may be a candidate to make his big-league debut in 2026 if he continues to stuff the stat sheet in the minors.

  • Cardinals' Joshua Baez: Finishes in style at Double-A

Baez homered in each of his final three regular-season games at Double-A Springfield, bringing his season total between High-A Peoria and Springfield to 20. It's been a true breakout season for Baez, who slashed .287/.384/.500 with 20 homers and 54 stolen bases over 117 contests. Contact issues had been the 22-year-old's biggest problem coming in 2025, and he managed to cut his strikeout rate from 34.4 percent to 20.6 percent year-over-year. Baez's arrow is firmly pointing up in dynasty leagues.

  • Cardinals' Joshua Baez: Back in action at Single-A

Baez (wrist) was reinstated from Single-A Palm Beach's 7-day injured list Tuesday and went 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and an RBI in his return to the lineup. Baez suited up for Palm Beach for the first time since debuting for the affiliate May 17 after spending the last three months recovering from and rehabbing a sprained left wrist. Prior to being activated, Baez slashed .237/.326/.395 over a 12-game rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

  • Cardinals' Joshua Baez: Placed on injured list

Baez was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list with a left wrist sprain Wednesday, Daniel Guerrero of MLB.com reports. Baez made his debut at Single-A Palm Beach on Tuesday but was removed from the game in the third inning. After going 0-for-1 with a strikeout Tuesday, he'll be forced to miss at least a week due to his wrist injury.
